It was a great team ef- fort combjned with a great attitude and desire on the part of many fine young men. The season opened with an uneventful squeaker over non-leaguer ELCO 7 to 3, but, then things began to jell and, with each passing week, the team's performance grew stronger and stronger. They became believers. With added confidence, courage and ability they pushed aside the next eight foes to become the Inter-County League Champions and number one in Berks County. Each boy proved himself a champion in his own right, but Gordie Speicher must be cited for his record breaking achievements. This past season he gained 1,015 yards rush- ing, scored 19 touchdowns, and was the county's second highest point getter with 128. Receiving recognition on the all Berks and All Inter- County teams were Gordie Speicher, lim Heimbach, Clint Kiscadden, Steve Horvat, Don Stamm, Dale Moser, Tab Wenrich, Kevin Greene, Kevin Hartman, Keith Freeman and Brian Yoh. Much credit for this year's success must also be given to such stalwart performers as Mike Zerbe, Rick Huseman, jeff Hartman, Bob Hoffa, Tom Schnee, Ron Larkins, Tim Berlin, and Scot Himmelberger. Every boy gave his best effort ..... and that effort be- came ..... the team ..... and that team became ..... the CHAMPION! The hockey team of '73 began the season in the Western B Division with two starters and one some- times starter from last year. With a new team and many girls playing in unfamiliar positions, we began the climb upward. Although many of the wins were one-sided, only a few of the losses were. Going into the third last game, we were tied for first place in a league race so close that a tie would mean the differ- ence between the championship and third, or even fourth place. The highlight of the season was the 3-1 upset of Hamburg. When it was all over, we were firmly entrenched in third place with a 5-4-3 record. -Coach Unger. This year's cross country team had a bit of a let down from the very successful 1972 season. Once again the team was undermanned, but the boys did put in many miles on the road morning and evening. The seniors, Dayne Weiss and Brian Webber, will be missed. The brightest spot on the team was sophomore Eric Moore, who placed fourth in Berks County, ninth in District 3 and 21st in the state meet. The class B Scouts participated in a class A Division and met some of the top class B teams in exhibi- tion games. After a slow start the team won 13 out of 14 games using a stingy de- fense and a high-powered offense. At this writing, the Scouts are preparing for the final three games of the regular season, whereupon they will enter the PIAA Dis- trict 3 Class B Playoffs. Once again, Mr. Wilkinson engineered a fine junior Varsity Team while Mr. Red- cay tutored the newly-formed junior High and Pony Teams. Coach Morgan Y 'V ti Girl's Basketball A-2, A new coach . . . Tina- -' 1 -- -,g,.,,5g'M KY: The 1973-74 season had many exciting moments for the girl's basketball team. Although our overall record shows only one win in ten games it does not reflect the time that the team almost pulled off the biggest upset in the county by losing to Division Champ Gov. Mifflin by only one point. Another exciting moment which I am sure the team will never forget is when a certain team member made a beautiful outside shot scoring two points for the the other team. I feel that the girls worked hard during the season and adjusted well to the fourth new coach in the last four years. Best wishes to the three graduating seniors and many thanks to the team, the managers, the cheerleaders, the girls pep band and for the support of the students, adults and - A parents during the season. Wrestling i Although we didn't enjoy as good a season as last year, there were a num- ber of bright spots. john Santamour finished the regular season unde- feated, bringing his three year record to 58-5. He is also favored to win the state title at 138 pounds. John is, without a doubt, the best wrestler ever produced at CW and perhaps the best ever in the county. Ron Stoudt also finished the season undefeated and has an excellent chance to make the State Tournament. Looking ahead to next year, we have a fine group of boys returning. ln addition to Stoudt, we have Todd Wen- rich, who had the finest first year of any wrestler at CW and Steve Schallau and Dan Kindt, two sophomores who also had fine seasons. We also had a very loyal following this year at both the home and away matches. With more support from the community, school, and students, I feel confident that CW can become a championship wrestling school. The boys and coaches are looking forward to next season, a winning season. Coach Heilman VARSITY: Back Row-Mgrs. V. Butcavage, K. Grimes, B. Marks. Middle Row-1. Santamour, Putt, D.
