This yearbook marks the beginning ofa new era for the educa- tion ofthe boys and girls of seven communities, Marion, Womelsdorf, Robesonia, Heidelberg, North Neidelberg, South Heidelberg and Wernersville. This is the first year that all of these school operated as one unit. We the class of '56 have concluded our school lite this first year of the completed iointure. We have proceeded under changes, and some handicaps in order that the future students of Conrad Weiser might have a better education. We would like to see the future stu- dents of the iointure get the best possible education, because the stu- dents ot today are the citizens of tomorrow. EDUCATION IS THE ARCHITECTURE OF TOMORROW. This thought is the theme of our Weicon for '56. May these pages regain many pleasant memories of the years spent at the Conrad Weiser Area Schools. We do so with mixed emotions. That we could not enjoy the excellent facilities that will be yours when the new Conrad Weiser High School occupies this site makes us a little regret' ful. Yet we are proud in the knowledge that we are pioneers in the movement that has united Western Berks tor better educational op- portunities and happy that you, the future students of Conrad Weiser, will reap the tull benefits of an educational program designed to pro- vide you with the latest and best in education in an up-to-date and well equipped plant. The Book of Proverbs teaches us this: l'Bring up a child in the way he shall go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. lt is our prayer that the building we envisage on this site will do lust that for you. 2 ADM: ON ' 'T have wrought Y , I., CONRAD WEISER JOINT BOARD Rev. Mrs. Elizabeth Webber Robert Koch Quinlen F. Slaudt To the Seniors: You no doubt have been thinking of your school as a place where you would re- ceive the knowledge and skills necessary for college or for a vocation. Beyond a doubt, this is an important function of education, and we hope that your twelve years in school have been profitable in this respect. We hope the school has also developed in you a sense of deep responsibility which will help you become a diligent and conscientious citizen of your community. As a re- sponsible citizen you have to assume positive leadership, be willing to help others, and make a contribution of your talents to the extent that you have been endowed. Only by doing these things will you achieve success. Many of us have dreams of high achievement in the future. Yet, we forget too often that success tomorrow is dependent upon how successful we were today. Too often we anticipate a bright future without being willing to give our best to every task. Only by assuming day-to-day responsibilities can we be assured of success in the future. Forming good behavior patterns today will determine the kind of citizens we shall be tomorrow. Assuming responsibilities and being a good citizen cannot be postponed. Our best wishes attend you. 5 Sincerely, K James F. Shankweiler l Supervising Principal Mr. James F Shankweller Supervising Principal Conrad Weiser Area Schools JOHN B. STOLTZFUS Supervisor of Elementary Education lt seems to me that the best way to make the most of your life and opportunities is to take the long look ahead. The present circumstances may seem unpromising and confused. That means all the more opportunity for planning, for patient building, for courageous pioneering, for inteli- gence, and for foundations laid on the bedrock of worth and virtue. You are greater than your environment. You stand on the summit of possibility, and the future will be largely what you make it. Let no one con- vince you that life is too uncertain to plan. Every great accomplishment of mankind has been realized in spite of the cry that it could not be done. You can plan, lose, and plan again, rising higher each time because of the purpose and discipline of your life. So nigh is grandeur to our dust So near is God to man, When Duty whispers low, Thou must, The youth replies, Nl can. -Emerson G. GILBERT SNYDER Supervisor of Secondary Education There is no source which produces ready-made leaders. The leaders of tomorrow are our youths of today. There seems to be a fallacy in the thought oft expressed that leaders are born, not made. Leaders make themselves. No upright building ever has been permanently erected without plans resulting from a dream and the plans and designs emanating from the architect's trestleboard. The lives we build follow the same patternf a dream-a plan--and the finished product. ln our free country anyone may dream, anyone may plan, and preparation for the fullfilment of that dream is open to all. The plans of the Great Architect of the Universe must be understood, there in lies the importance of understanding, and wisdom-Education. Wisdom is the princi- ple thingy therefore get wisdom, and with all thy getting, get understanding. Schooling is a factor, but EDUCATION, the practical application of schooling and learning, is THE ARCHITECT OF TOMORROW. Education may bring to you the laurel wreath of achieve- ment and success. lit ' ' T f 3, K. .,- A .5 .. Y 'E .- L .wa - , H 5 1 f dpi .... Broom in hand, Jacob Hunsicker pauses in his daily work to pose for our camera, An accident from the playground made Howard Bardorf more work. The trees needed a little trimming and Calvin Brossman went right to work. Put more coal on the fire seems to be a favorite expres- sion ofthe pupils and that is exactly what Daniel Ohlinger is doing. Here we see Mrs. Kulp catching up on her typing during a busy day. Money, Money, Money! says Mrs. Weinen as she counts the cafeteria money for the day. Shorthand and typing seem to make up most of my day's work was the reply given us by Mrs. Spiess. From this large number only the best were chosen to form the senior band. Under the leadership and instruction at Mr. J Albert Leader weekly rehearsals were held in the Werriersville Center The excellent ability ofthe members is proved by the tact that twentyeeight Conrad Weiser musicians were chosen for the County Band, a record tor any school in Berks County. ln addition seven of our members were selected tor the State Band The band engaged in a number ot activitiesn the Ephrata Fair, the Berks County Christmas Parade, the Robesonia Jack Frost Frolic, and tund raising altairs in the various communities of the loinlure, The chief activity was the spring concert, held in the auditorium at the Wer- nersv ille Center. This was well attended, and the high calibre ofthe program was proved by the many favorable comments at those who attended and by the tact that the program was later repeated in a broadcast over radio station WEEU, Reading. Much credit tor the success ot the bond is dUS to the mOStSI'fUl instructions of Mr. Leader, supervisor of instrumental music.
