STAFF Last year we said there is nothing so permanent as change . We reiterate, .... and if there is a bit of regret at the passing of the old there is a great deal of enthusiasm and anticipation at the coming of the new. The buildings we showed in the architects' drawings last year are becoming a reality. The old Adminis- tration Building shown here in its treeshaded beauty will be remodeled as a classroom building and the love- ly new Administration Building will take its place, as the head of the college buildings. With the new women's dormitory and the remodeling of Russell into a men's dormitory, living on campus will be enhanced. The new student center with its cafeteria-dining hall, private banquet room, ballroom, game room, snack-bar, and bookstore will become the center of social life on campus. The most recent expansion, academically, has been the embracing of the Muskogee junior College as a Branch and the addition of technical training courses at the Branch which meet the industrial needs of the community. Greater Connors , now, combines the strengths of Muskogee junior College and those of the main campus. Echoes of the Past: - Connors was established in 1909 by the Oklahoma Legislature as a School of Agri- culture which emphasized Agriculture, Home Economics, and the arts necessary to rural living. lt was named for J. P. Connor who was then President of the Board of Agriculture, and was located in Eastern Oklahoma near the town of Warner mainly through the efforts of Senator Campbell Russell whose home was nearby. Through the years, Connors has developed into a Liberal Arts College granting Associate Degrees in the Arts and Sciences and offering pre-professional training in law, medicine, engineering, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and teacher-education. Through the combined efforts of the Boards of Control, the presidents, strong faculties, and an appreciative citizenry it has become a stronghold of learning. If to any one person leadership credit in the development of the college could be given it would have to go to President jacob johnson. His has been the honor and the duty of guiding the college through the past thirty years of its operation. However, President johnson would be the first to say that Connor's achieve- ment in the field of high education has been and will continue to be due, not only to the leadership of its president and the ability of its faculty, but to the character and sincerity of purpose of its students. Stepping Stones to the Future: - The many facets of education now available to the student bodies of Greater Connors whether aimed at continuing at senior colleges, going into the business world, commu- nity service, or the-wide-blue-yonder , are adequate to prepare each for his next step. History has a way of continuing--and so does our story. To the personnel of Greater Connors we present for your enjoyment of 1962-63 Con-Rah! May its Echoes be pleasant and your Stepping Stones be easy to reach! --: Treva Maxfield, Fred Monaco, Sharon Pierce, Linda Cottner, Marilyn Moore, Erma jean Harris, Wes McFarland, Barbara Byrom, Wanda Chester, Sandra Wells, Doug Fine, Cornell Roberts, Myrna Holmes, Donna Cawthon, Mary Sue Owen, Mike Allen, Elizabeth Daniels, Trois Hill, jack Nixon Wes Mc- Farland, Lee Turney and Miss Claire Harrison, Sponsor. This publication could be considered a Book of Memories for each student. In it are recorded the names and picmres of all your friends, action shots of athletic events and a complete list of all campus activities from September, 1962 to june, 1963. In the years to come you'll treasure this book even more than you do now. I have derived great personal satisfac- tion out of working With each of you during the past year. To the Sophomores I Wish to say: Best Wishes for your success and happiness as you continue your education. And to the Freshmen: I hope that each of you will find it possible to come back to a bigger, better Connors in the Fall of 1963. I Mrs. lrene Hodges, Assistant to the Finance Officer, Miss Kaye Rogers, Student Secretary ....... L -2--pvvzr.. THE PRESlDENT'S MESSAGE Congratulations to the Con Rah staff for giving us this years history of our ac- tivities. We are indebted to the members of the staff for much hard work, and we offer you our thanks. It has been good to have on the campus the young men and women who have made up this years student body. The faculty and the administration deem it a privilege to have served you as you have persued goals you have set for your personal im- provement. This has been a busy year and We think a good year for the growth of your college. Your co-operation has been an important part of it all. We are living in a time when new and exciting events, social, political, and tech- nological, are affecting our lives and the way we live. These are not times for school as usual, but times that call for no less than the best in each of us. If we are to compete as individuals and as a nation, we must de- velop our potential to the fullest. As you review this years activity, we hope you are able to do so with satisfaction, satisfaction in strengthening your good con- victions and in the enlargement of your hori- zon for the future. We congratulate the graduating sopho- mores and wish you success. We invite the freshmen to return to the campus to work with us again next year. Sincerely yours, jacob johnson President Miss Annabelle Gatlin, Registrar and Finance Officer D Miss Sirley Ezell, Secretary to the President -Q X 'Fill' . ,:,i1l-rvlll luis JJIWF' K, 5 7 .4,1 v-l'fnw ,l1 ,-.gm I hw lm., '-:. flii4P-Pt . STAFF: As Dean of Women and Mathematics In- structor, I pay tribute to all students who are sincerely making an effort to accomplish something important to their pre sent and fu- ture welfare, but as Sponsor of The Con- Rah! I want to especially point out what my staff has done, and commend them. Each year, early in the first semester, I invite any student who is interested in year- book Work to become a member of the staff of The Con-Rah! The members of the staff are volunteers who give their time and talent to do any part of the work asked of them ..... without reward, except for the pride of having done something for the stu- dent body that is worthwhile. I have had a wonderful staff this year. They have worked hard and willingly. . .sell- ing advertising, gathering together pictures of student life for the snap-shot pages, sell- ing subscriptions to the yearbook, and doing the biggest job of all, helping to plan and assemble the materials for the printer. Per- haps Sissie and Mary Sue need an especial pat-on-back for their pasting job, and Treva and Wanda for their typing jobs. For lack of time and space, I do not enu- merate each and his particular contribution, but, as the picture below indicates, no one has been idle. In this picture, and on pages three and thirty-two are the staff members as they worked together. If it seems that there has been an emphasis on picturing the staff, it is my way of honoring them for a job well done. Miss CLAIRE A. HARRISON, Dean of Women, Sincerely' Mathematics Instructor, and Sponsor of The Con-Rah! P A R T O F T Claire A. Harrison, Sponsor. 'pub y.. Miss Bessie Huff Dean, Muskogee Branch Miss Huff reminisces: Through the halls of Muskogee junior College, through the churches and busi- nesses, and in the homes of Muskogee as well as out in the world echo the voices of the students who have worked, laughed, and prayed their way through Muskogee junior College. . Somehow no matter how obscure the spot was where the school might be put, regardless of how uncomfortable the indi- viduals were personally, each new loca- tion echoed with pleasure and co-operation. In the frame houses, the fires and water had to be turned off each night in winter. Each morning there was a general rustle of activity as water and heat were re- stored. Gloves and overcoats were Worn in the early classes. People were crowd- ed as they passed up and down stairs. Their tramp, tramp mingled with laughter echoed through the years. Muskogee junior College has never been an institution in the sense that there were buildings and a campus. Books were al- ways everywhere and the library was like the living room of a home . The great num- bers who have gone on to senior college to complete higher degrees testify to what the young people took from their earnest, kind, helpful, and excellent instructors. Each former student was like a small pebble dropped into a pool, The eddy of each joined that of another until those pebbles be- came the great stepping stones that have brought about the change to a new, bigger, and better school for Muskogee. Muskogee Junior College has been made up of happy people, both faculty and stu- dents, from every race, creed or color who will always love it. ,er jc. Thirty-five breeders from five states placed 120 bulls on rate of gain test. States represented were Nebraska, Arkansas, Kansas, and Texas. The 140 day gain test was concluded on january 30, 1963. An Angus bull owned by The Acee Company of Ft. Smith, Arkansas topped all entries by gaining 3 1X2 pounds a day for 140 days. Eighty-five bulls that passed graduation requirements were sold on February 27, 1963. Interest in these bulls was manifested by inquiries for information coming in from several states and Canada. This offering of bulls coming from this performance test represents the top 213 of 120 bulls from 35 breeders living in five different states. This performance test has been conducted by the college agriculture department in cooperation with the Oklahoma Extension Division, Oklahoma Beef Cattle Improvement Association, and the Muskogee Hereford Breeders Association and cooperating breeders. Performance in beef production means ability to gain weight. The rate of growth a calf makes during the first 205 days of its life reflects the rnothering ability of its dam. Feedlot gain after weaning gives more proof of bred-in ability to convert grass or grain into beef. Yearling weight expressed in total gain or weight per day of age is a most important evaluative criteria, since it reflects both weaning and feedlot gain. At the right, Mr. Hodges, is pictured beside one of the six self-feeders used in the testing program. Connors State Agricultural College IACOB IOHNSON, PRESIDENT Welcome to thls, the second annual Bull Sale from the Performance Testing Program at Connors State Agricultural College. The college feels a responsibility to help in any way possible in the promotion of agriculture in all its phases, including beef cattle improve- ment. We at the college are pleased that the breeders have given us an opportunity to participate in this performance testing program. These pro- grams have been operating ln the state and the contribution they are making to the improvement of the livestock industry ls well known. For the college and for all the breeders who have participated in this program, I extend you a cordial welcome. We hope you will enjoy your vlsit to our campus. Sincerely yours , JH-C06 JDAIIJUI1 President Connors State Agricultural College WARNER, OKLAHOMA I wish to take this opportunity to welcome you to our second sale of performance tested bulls. You will find a good set of bulls with bred-ln ability to convert grass or graln into beef, bulls desirable in type, and of popular pedigrees. The average adjusted weaning weight on all bulls selling is 536 pounds. The teedlot grains are realistic. There are bulls of different ages, from 12-18 months, so you should find what you want here. At 112 days the average dally gain on all bulls was 2.80tt, with the high at 4. 023. It has been a pleasure towork wlththe owners of these bulls, in this, our second test of bulls, where all have had an equal chance of express- ing their bred-ln ability in terms of feedlot gain.
