Con-Rah! Proud name . . . The Con-Rah! . . . interpreted, it means Ta big cheer for Connors? The name was submitted by a student in 1946 and adopted by the faculty and the student body. Some names are used by more than one school, but not TThe Con-RahT, . . . it belongs to Connors, exclusively. Allen Merrill designed the cover for TThe Con-RahY, It carries out the theme of Connofs Golden Anniversary. We have had fifty years of work, achievement, and fun . . . and still going strong? We honor our President, Jacob Johnson, in this issue for his twenty-six years of service to Connors . and may he have many more successful ones. Being on the staff has not meant all-work-and-no-play. Eight of the staff, with Miss Harrison and Mr. Martin, attended a year-book conference in Joplin, Missouri, in October which was di- rected by the Semco Color Press of Oklahoma City. The conference was instructive, the trip delight- ful, and dinner at the Glass House over the Will Rogers Turnpike met with everyone,s approval. Everyone had fun during the Sadie Hawkins week and Dance which was sponsored by the staff. Even Pedrds pig, Harleyk hen, and Haskele dog got into the act. The TDog-Patch Sham-Pain Buckitf, the jugs of TMountain Dew? and Mammy Yokum,s F rainch PastryT were greatly appreci- ated, as were the services of TMarryinT Samy, tPaul Smithy The staff dinner closed the yeafs activities . . . but memories linger on . . . you have but to turn the pages . . . ZOHHDWHWHZHKU? HISTORY OF CONNORS As the young state of Oklahoma grew from xArrows to Atom? during its first half-century of existance, this institution of education also grew. ' The oId-timers tell us that iithe first fifty years are the hardest? and, as we look back on all their days of trial and hard work, they might well be right. . Connors State School of Agriculture, named for Mr. J. P. Connors, first president of the State Board of Agriculture, opened its doors in February of 1909 for students through grades six to eleven with a faculty consisting of four members. Thirty-five students were enrolled and classes were held in the 01d Warner Public School Building. Later, the school occupied the rooms above what is now F inkleais store. In 1911, the Administration Building was completed and the school was moved to its present site, one mile west of Warner. ' Since that time the staff has increased to twenty-seven members and the plant has increased in size to 290 acres with twelve major buildings which are situated 011 a beautifully llandscaped thirty- four acre campus. Since 1941, Connors State Agricultural College has been a full-fledged junior college, accredited. At present, it is a vital unit of the 18 state colleges and universities of higher learning in Oklahoma. Along the way, Connors has had eleven presidents beginning with J. A. Liner. The current president is Jacob Johnson. The educational course's have changed with the day as well as the rules and regulations of conduct, but the close, friendly spirit of Connors has remained always the same. At the Golden Anniversary Day held on the campus on April 11 this year, every former student attending brought with him the memories of his days at Connors. Tales of good days and of sad ones, of good times and Thadi ones twhen chastisement caught one unawaresi filled the air as the 01d grads reminisced. The 1959 students listened with wonder and pride as they heard the recounts of former days. In their hearts, they realized that they had become a part of something precious in the minds of men and that there was a meeting of minds on the greatwish for Connors to continue to be of service in the lives of people. Fir't-dmmdm Greetings All: This has been another good year for Connors. The cooperation of students, instructors and ad- ministration has made it so. Our congratulations go to the Con-Rah staff for recording this yeafs history. Each year brings new problems and new ideas to challenge our thinking. Our present and future are affected by swiftly moving events that are a part of our daily living. Living these events together as a group is an important part of our total education. Your faculty is pleased to have had this op- portunity to work with you. It is my hope that each of you can find real satisfaction in this yeafs experience of living, working and playing to- gether. Congratulations to our sophomores who will be graduating. We extend a cordial invitation to our freshmen to study with us again next year. Best wishes to all. To him must go a great portion of the credit for the growth and stam- ina of the college as we know it. WE SALUTE HIM. Mr. Johnson began his career in the public schools of Faxon and Indiahoma, Oklahoma, as grade principal, and later, superintendent of schools. He was married to Miss Ruby Galyon of Lawton. They have two children . . . Bill of Evansville, Indiana, and Mrs. Sherrill Duvall CiJodieU of Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania. Five grandchildren call President and Mrs. Johnson by their iipet names . . . xJake P2? and iiMamma B007, After 11 years at Indiahoma, Mr. Johnson was appointed President of Connors in 1933. He has the distinction of having served a longer period of time as president than any other present- day college or university president in Oklahoma thus making him the itDean of Presidents of Okla- homa Institutions of Higher Learning? His educational training was received at Edmond State College, the University of Oklahoma, and at Leland Stanford University of California. President Johnson saw service in two World Wars. In World War II, he served as military Government Officer in charge of Education in the European Theatre, 1943-1945. He also served in the campaigns of the Rhineland, Ardennes, Northern France, and Central Europe. He was awarded the E.A.H.E. Theatre Ribbon With four bronze stars, the Victory Medal, and the American Theatre Ribbon. President Johnson is an active Rotarian, Knight Templar, and Shriner. He is a member of the Eastern Oklahoma Area Council of Boy Scouts, and holds the SilverBeaver Award. THE STUDENT SENATE The executive officers of the Student Senate are Paula Vanhooser, Parliamentarian; Phyllis Hines, Secretary-Treasurer; Harley Reno, President; and Pat Garvin, Vice-President. The Connors Student Senate is composed of representatives from each class and active organiza- tions on the campus. The Senate was established for the purpose of co-ordinating the various student activities and to act as a liaison group between the college administration, the faculty, and the student body. THE N EWMAN CLUB The Newman Club is an organization for Catholic Students, attending Connors, which was formed this year. There are twelve active members: Rosa Lee Martin, Jane Kloeckler, Jane Synar, Miss Anna Belle Catlin, sponsor; Eugene Buchanan, Earl Strebeck, Pedro Pantoja, Bill Thornhill, In Chol Lim, and Johnny Shawn. The Activities included: Monthly art exhibits by out of state artists, F ield trips to Philbrook and Gil- creasce Art Museums, Semester Art Exhibits, Mural for Halloway Hall, Christmas back drop for the music department, Religious backdrop for the Easter program, Motherhs Day Tea, and the Picture of the Month. CONNORS MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Connors Music Departmenfs appearances included: request talent program at Haskell High School, including vocal and piano solos and trio; Reasor Denison, sponsored by the Oklahoma State F arm Bureau, appeared at the Talent Review in Ok lahoma City on N ovember 26, won first and was one of five chosen for first place in Boston on December 6; and appeared on the Baccalaureate and Com- mencement programs. The Connors Music Department, assisted by the Art Department, sponsored a beautiful Christmas and Easter program; and a ttConnors Steve Allen,, Lyceum group, appearing in towns of the immediate area. Music groups on the campus consisted of the glee club, Connofs F reshman Girls Trio, the 4 Queens tgirls quartet h , a mixed quartet, and several duet teams, both vocal and piano. THE B APTIST sTUDENT UNION The Baptist Student Union is a Baptist organization on the Connors campus. We are supported through a co-operate program between the State B.S.U. and the local church in Warner. We have various activities through the school year. September was the month we met with Eastern,s B.S.U.,ers in a retreat in the Kiamichi Baptist Camp at Talihina. In November we sponsored a hayride and Wiener roast. Every Christmas we go caroling to the elder people of Warner. Our high light of the yeafs activities was in the Sweetheart Banquet in F ebruary. We have the election of three next year officers in May. Our council meets the beginning of every semes ter to plan a semester program. We have our weekly vesper sewice every Wednesday night. Dan Sulivzmt Roger Lee Sweeney Tom Williams I 1958-959 Football Season 1 This year the 1958-59 Connoris Aggies Football team racked up a 3 win, 4 loss, and 1 tie ball game record. Our team first traveled to Corsicanna, Texas to play Navarro Junior College and fell to 13-0 defeat. On September 25 they went to Eastern A8zM to come up with an 18-0 Win. Still on to victory we beat the Oklahoma 1iOutIaws5 on October 4, 22-13 with us playing at McAlester. On a very rainy night at our Homecoming they beat Eastern A8zM again on October 9, 13-6. 011 October 16, we lost to Northern 7-0 anti also on October 22 we were host to Murray in the afternoon. The score was tied up with a 7-7 score. Our last two games our luck seemed to not be as good as we had hoped for for we fell to be defeated by Northeastern A8zM 53-0 and to Murray on November 8, 21-18. The final Conference record was 10 wins 4 losses, and we were tied with Bacone College for Second place in our Conference. The Aggie Team was Third best Defensive Team in the nation. pr-r'o wwwow On December 2nd the Aggies traveled to Oklahoma City to play the O. C. F. where the Aggies fell 63-66. On December 4th, the Aggies went to Miami and entered in a tournament. They played Joplin, Missouri and lost with the score of 60-63. On the 5th they won over N orthem 56-34, and still fight- ing hard, won over Oklahoma Military Academy 49-45. The Aggies came out Third place winners. mwmahps brmwwwu December 9th Central Christian paid a visit to Connors to be beaten by a score of 56-52. On December 11th Arkansas University F rosh beat Connofs on our own court 49-44. The 16th of December we were again beaten by Paris Junior College 60-52. Our luck changed When we won over 0. C. U. Fresh on December 18th, 52-50. With hopes still high a hard game was played when Paris Jr. College came for their visit and won 44-50. After a rest during the Christmas holiday the Aggies on January 9th, whipped Northeastern A and M 50-41. On January 14th, we won here at Warner 60-45, over Northern Junior College. On Janualy 23rd, Connors fell to Mun'ay 1 42-46, and on January 24th, we lost to Tulsa Frosh, there, 65-43. On January 27th we lost to Eastern 57-50. With Connofs back on their toes once again we won over Bacone 57-47 on January 29th. It was a very good hard fought ball game. With our good team, we then won over Northeastern A and M once again 60-50. With our boys still in the lead, we then went to Tonkawa and beat North- ern 61-49. On F ebmary 14th, we lost to Arkansas Uni- versity Frosh 59-48. On F ebruary 19th, we won over Eastem at Wilburton 81-67. In the hardest of all fought ball games with a F ive Minute overtime, we lost much to our dis- appointment to Bacone on F ebruary 2lst, 66-67. We then played O.M.A. on February 25th, and came to victory with a 72-51 score. In our final game of the season, we were bound for Stillwater on F ebruary 28th and won over the Oklahoma State University F rosh 53-48. On March 5th we went to Lawton to enter the tournament and lost to Cameron 73-60. We had a very good year, and a motto that would fit this 1958-59 Basketball team best would be, 5VVe1re striving on to Victory?
