I hope you will always- be able to remember this year with pleasure. In this fast-changing world of ours, great chal- lenges lie ahead of us. We can best meet these chal- lenges by securing a good education. We hope, of course, that each of you will spend the first two years of your college life at Connors. I should like to say to the Sophomores that I con- sider it a privilege to have had the opportunity of working with you during the past two years. I value your friendship and wish for you the best that life has to offer. And to the Freshmen-I am looking forward with pleasure to the 1958-S9 school year, hoping that each of you will be able to return to Connors and con- tinue your education. Sincerely yours, A. B. Childress Dean refzklentff Message Congratulations to the Con-Rah! staff for this school year's history. XVe owe a lot to those who have preserved this year's activities in picture and story. It has required a tremendous amount of time and effort, and we extend our thanks. Congratulations to the young men and women who have made up this year's student body. It has been good to have you on the campus. The faculty and the administration are privileged to have had the oppor- tunity to be of service to you. This is an important age in which we live, and one that should challenge the best there is in us, students and faculty alike. Our leadership in the free world is being challenged as never before, yes, even our own way of life. How well we meet that challenge now, and in the future, depends on how well each of us faces up to it. I hope that each has set for himself high goals for scholarship and cooperative living and has made good progress in his attainment. If, as you review this year's work, you can find that your college has helped you in attaining these goals, and in strengthening your faith in our way of life, we will have satisfaction with you. Congratulations to the graduating sophomores and a friendly invitation to the freshmen to return next year to study with us, and best wishes to all. Jacob Johnson President W 1 ':., ,ww L . . A. History of Connors College Connors State Agricultural College was authorized by an ZICI of the first legislature, May 10, 1908. Through the influence of Senator Campbell Russell, Wariaer was chosen as its location and one-hundred-sixty acres of land upon which the school is located was given to the school by the citizens of Wfarner. The school was named for Mr. tl. P. Connors who was at that time President of the State Board of Agriculture. The first session of Connors opened in February of 1909 in downtown Wfarner. In 1911, the Administration Building was completed and the school was moved to its present site, one mile west of Wfarner. Mr. KI. A. Liner was the first president. Mr. Wfalter Van Allen was the succeeding president in 1910, and he was followed by Mr. S. Murray in 191 1. The presidents during the 1912- 1 913 session of the school were Mr. V. Faulk- ner and Mr. W. S. Jackson. President Rennick replaced Jackson in 1913, but he remained only a short time. He was succeeded by Mr. Malone who resigned in 1917. At that time Mr. George A. Coffey of Haskell State School of Ag- riculture was transferred to Connors. In 1918 Mr. H. C. King became president of Connors and he held the position for fifteen years. Succeeding him as president was Mr. Jacob Johnson whose service has been continuous. In 1943 the war program called Mr. Johnson into active service overseas, and during his leave of absence Mr. True B. Emer- son served as acting president. From the original one-hundred-sixty acres, the college land has been increased to two-hundred-ninety acres, and the buildings have increased from one to twelve major buildings. The campus, which covers about thirty-four acres, is beautifully landscaped. An amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution made on July 11, 1944, set up a governing board for the agri- cultural and mechanical colleges. This board consists of nine members, eight of whom are appointed by the Gover- nor subject to the approval of the State Senate, and the ninth member is the president of the State Board of Agri- culture. Connors is also under the supervision of the I3oardofRegents for Higher Education. H 'i V.. A lk . . if ? 4 'f A . at .f.fa.-i Max 9 , . . Kam! ,,c...1..f., ,,.....,.m r stl A J- P- ARNSPIGER A- L. Reserve Ujfeem Training Corps The primary mission of the Reserve Officers Training Corps is to select from the student bodies of our schools, colleges, and universities those men whose character, apti- tude, and qualities of leadership show greatest promise of their development into efficient officers and to give those selected students the training and instruction in military fundamentals necessary to fit them for commission as sec- ond lieutenants in the Officers' Reserve Corps. The initial selection is made at the end of the Basic Course given here at Connors College. Aside from its primary function of supplying Re- serve Officers, the Reserve Officers Training Corps has had the continued support of educators, who consider it a valuable asset to their institutions, both from an edu- cational viewpoint and because of its general value. In normal times, it is in its role of a character-building organi- zation that the Reserve Officers Training Corps receives its greatest recognition. By teaching individual discipline and respect for constituted authority and later giving practice in directing the actions of others, the military training de- velops qualities of leadership that are of great value in any profession or occupation. Basketball 1957-58 The Connors Aggie Squad, coached by Wes- ley Keeney, consisted of eleven freshmen and four sophomores, three of whom were lettermen A. D. James, Ray Kirk, and Leon Dixon. The season opened at Sallisaw, December 2, with Okmulgee Tech. The opener was a success- ful start with the score 41-33 in favor of the Con- nors Aggies. Our first conference game, played on the home court against O. M. A., defeated the Visitors 59-38. The Aggies traveled to Miami for their first tournament ofthe 1957-58 season, playing O. M. A., Garden City, Kansas, and Coffeeville, Kansas. Connors lost to Coffeeville in the finals 66-37. However, another trophy was added to our col- lection. At the close of the first semester, we had won eight games and lost four, losing two hard fought games to the Tulsa Freshmen and one to a very sharp shooting team from Paris Jr. College, Paris, Texas. The conference during the season of 1957-58 was perhaps the best-balanced league in the history of the O. J. C. C. Connors split games with Bacone, O. M. A., Northern, and Eastern, but lost both games to Murray and Miami. Connors conference standing after losing a well-played game against Eastern at Wilburton Was 4-8. After the regular schedule closed, Connors played Arkansas Freshmen in two games, one at Sallisaw and the other in Fayetteville, and lost both games. 4 .T 'Mf'Qf Q K 1 fu ' ' ii :'ff h '7 .-...1,.......,.,....,. ,.x,........-. .. ........,..,a....,.,.,,., Ta. ---,..V,.. ., , M... , .1 ,,,u,,,,,,,,, 3 Jia. The Region 2 tournament held in Lawton ended the 1957-58 season. After the first round bye, Connors rnet the undefeated and number- one-ranked team in the nation, Cameron. Against them Connors played their best game of the season and for three quarters of the game, the contest was very much in doubt. Cameron won in the last quarter. A successful start and an unfortunate finish, ended our season with ten wins and fifteen losses. Football 1957-58 The Aggies, this year, had a little better record in football than last year's 1-5-0. They finished their conference season with a two-win, five-loss and no-tie record. Connors won the first conference game over O. M. A. by a 21-6 score. The week before, the non-conference game with Henderson, Texas was lost 3 3-6. On October 3, Connors played host to the Outlaws , and beat them S9-O. On October 10, the Aggies bowed to Wilburton 12-7. October 24, O. M. A. defeated the Aggies 7-0. October 31, Northeastern A. and M. at Miami came down to hand us our worst defeat of the season. The final score was 46-13, and on November 7, Connors was handed another defeat by Murray 27-14. This was the 'lHomecoming game. On November 14, Tonkawa proved to be too much for the Aggies as they delivered a 41-14 defeat. Valian t Fighters-Good Losers-Hard Luck ,, --..q.,,,, 7- .u......4-- 'A I.. r- '1 F' ...
