The school was named for J. P. Connors who was at that time President of the State Board of Agriculture. The first session of Connors opened in February of 1909 in downtown Warner. In 1911, the Administration was completed and the school was moved to its present site, one mile west of Warner. Mr. J. A. Liner was the first president. Mr. Walter Van Allen was the succeeding president in 1910, and he was by Mr. J. S. Murray in 1911. The presidents during the 1912-1913 session of the school were Mr. J. V. aulkner and Mr. W. S. Jackson. President Tennick replaced President Jackson in 1913 but remained only a short He was succeeded by Mr. Malone who resigned in 1917. At that time Mr. George A. Coffey of Haskell State of Agriculture was transferred to Connors. In 1918 Mr. H. C. King became president of Connors and held the for fifteen years. Succeeding him as president was Mr. Jacob Johnson whose service has been continuous. 1943 the war program called Mr. Johnson into active service overseas and, during his leave of absence, Mr. True Emerson served as acting President. 'H From the original one-hundred-sixty acres, the college land has been increased to two-hundred-ninety acres, the buildings have been increased from one to twenty major buildings. The campus which covers about thirty- acres is beautifully landscaped. An amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution made on July 11, 1944, set up a governing board for the Agricul- and Mechanical Colleges. This Board consists of nine members, eight of whom are appointed by the Governor to the approval of the State Senate, and the ninth member is the President of the State Board of Agriculture. above at their conference table, the following members: Fred G. The residence hall in which you lived from September, 1952 to May, 1953, was a sort of second home for you. You did a heap o' livin' it you made some new friends, took part in campus activities, tried to make a good scholastic record, and learned how to adjust your lite to meet changing conditions. If you did all these things there was growth - mental, emotional, spiritual. As you look back over your 1952-53 school year at Connors I hope you will try to forget the unpleasant things which might have come your way, and remem- ber only the pleasant experiences. The heaviest load anyone can carry is a mind full oi resentments and disappointments. I have enjoyed working with each of you, and con- sider every student who attended Connors in 1952-53 a good personal friend of mine. May I extend to each of you my very best wishes for a long and happy life spent in the service ot' your fellow man. Sincerel y, Si A. B. Childress Dean .Q . MR. A. B. CI-IILDRESS, our Dean. As right ha man to the President, he is the detail man who kee faculty, students, and employees informed and ha pily busy at the many tasks incident to learning a teaching at Connors. When he is not in his office he c be found usually helping-out by visiting the dor tories, library, Rec-Hall, or cafeteria. Not many ho of the day, days of the week, or weeks of the mo find him oh' the Campus. For his tolerant and fair treatment of everyone, commend himg for his friendliness and sincerity, like him 5 and for his untiring efforts and loyalty Connors we honor him. In addition to her duties as secretary-clerk she is the College Registrar and as such becomes a sort of liaison officer between students and faculty-administration. Miss Gatlin might be called Miss Connors because from being a student she went directly into office work here at the College and has remained. She knows us from the inside-out of dormitory life to faculty row and through it all is congenial and nice to know and work with. Louis Henson, a returning letterman, took scoring laurels by canning 21 points. The Aggies then journeyed to Ft. Smith and trounced the Arkansas club 63-35. The askewites then began the Oklahoma Junior College Conference race by slipping past Bacone 58-49. It was then the Aggies felt the sting of defeat as Tulsa Frosh edged them 38-39 but they soon retaliated by walloping Ft. Smith Junior College 81-42. The Cowboys next went to Miami for the Oklahoma Junior College Conference Tournament. Playing their first game against Joplin Junior College the Aggies defeated them 78-67. With one victory in the tourney, Connors met Okmulgee A8uM Tech and scraped to a 47-38 win. The Aggies went into the finals against Coffeyville Junior College, with Ray Prusa, a transfer from Tulsa, connecting for ten points. The Aggies won the tournament 41-39. John Paul Jones, a classy freshman from Ft. Smith, Arkansas, won the tournament's most valuable play- er award and received a trophy for the honor. The Connors five then dropped two games to Northern Junior College 65-69, and Oklahoma ABLM Fresh 35-Sl. Connors then entertained Muskogee Junior College on their home fioor and defeated them 59-48 behind the shooting of John Paul Jones who connected for 18 points. The Cowboys engaged in a home- and-home series with the Oklahoma City University Fresh but lost both games by 42-53 and 41-52 scores. Back into the Conference race once again the Aggies trounced Oklahoma Military Academy 66-31 and the Murray Aggies 78-59. This brought Connors to one of the most important games of the season, against Eastern A8z.M of Wilburton. The contest was close all the way with both teams playing deliberate basketball. The count was knotted at 52-52 but, just as the buzzer sounded ending the game, a foul was called on the Aggies and so the game went on the books as 52-53 with Eastern coming out on top. The Aggies well remem- bered that score for the very next week they were defeated by Murray by the same identical score and under practically the same conditions. Connors got their first win from big school competition by nipping the Arkansas University Freshmen 40-39 in a game played at Sallisaw. However the next night at Rogers, Arkansas, the Razorbacks defeated the Aggies 69-71. The Eastern Mountaineers then invaded the Connors' gymnasium and eked out a 54-52 win over the Aggies! enter Raymond Gann,' another letterman led the scoring with 14 points. The Cowboys were still smartin from their defeat but still roared past the OMA Cadets 74-43. Freshman Joe DeSoto, a six foot-six inch center from Magnolia, Arkansas, hooked in 12 points to lead the Aggies. The Connors squad was determined to get revenge from the Northern Junior College Mavericks on their home court and defeated them 67-55. In their return game with Bacone the Aggies displayed very accurate shooting in whipping the Warriors 68-47. In the last conference game of the season the Aggies trimmed the Northeastern ABLM Vikings 71-60. Keith Colson, a five foot-nine inch freshman, tallied 21 points to cop scor- ing honors. This ended the regular season of play and the Aggies had won second place in the Oklahoma JUCO Con- ference. The team was invited to the National Regional tournament in Amarillo, Texas and to secure funds for attending the tournament the Aggies played a benefit game with the Rogers-Cole Hudson Hornets, an in- dependent team from Muskogee. The Aggies defeated the Hornets and obtained enough money from contribu- tions and ticket sales for the trip. The Aggies played Claredon Junior College, Claredon, Texas, in their first game and swept by them 68-55. This pitted them against favored Howard County Junior College. The Cowboys lost 55-61. Paul Walters and Ray Prusa, both Tulsa University transfers, led the scoring with 15 and 14 points respectively. Losing this put the team out of the running for the championship but they tangled with Arlington State of Arlington, Texas, for their final game. They were defeated 49-71 but still copped fourth place. Paul Walters made the all-tournament team. The Aggies had a season record of 18 wins and 11 losses. They also had a very fine defensive record of about 50 points per game. During the season the Connors squad were always ahead of their opponents in re- bounds, with each member ox' the squad getting his share. Squadmen included: Louis Henson, Kenneth Dann, Raymond Gann, Don Butler, John P. Jones, Paul Walters, Ray Prusa, Keith Colson, Darrell Carr, Don Pierson, Paul Ables, Joe DeSoto, J. B. Stigall, Rex Whittern, Joe Young, and Wesley Jarman served as trainer. Jnmfball Coach Tom Johnson's football charges with nine returning lettermen, started their season with a 40-0 win over Pittsburg Teachers College B team. The returning lettermen included: Milton Armstrong, Jack Ever- hart, Johnny Moore, George Palmer, Jim Zachary Chalf backsjg and Kenneth Wilmon, Connie Coldiion, Bob Davis and Russell Wilkey, linemen. The Aggies lost to Northeastern Vikings 13-40 at Miami. Against the Oklahoma Military Academy Cadets the Cowboys were edged 12-19. Playing the highly touted Bacone War- riors Connors displayed some very fine broken field running and with the exception of two passes did a very fine job on defense against the team that went to the Rose Bowl. Connors was defeated 27-40 but scored more against Bacone than Bacone's other opponents had scored. The Aggies had themselves a field day against Murray Aggies at Tishomingo and piled up the yardage as they romped Murray 33-7. Milton Armstrong, a halfback, ran 90 yards for one of the game's outstanding plays. With two conference games remaining, the Aggies were out of the running for the championship but kept up the fighting spirit and by defeating Northern 28-7 and Eastern A8rM 20-13 managed to cop third place behind Bacone and Northeastern. In one of the more thrilling games at home the Connors eleven edged the Southeastern State B squad 27-21. Coffeyville Junior College invaded the Connors field and walked away winners 33-14. This left Connors with a won-lost record of 5-4. Jack Everhart and Jim Zachary, both backs, were named to the Oklahoma Junior College all-conference team for their outstanding performance during the season. , Coach Johnson will have a nucleus of thirteen returning lettermen with which to build his 1953 squad. Those returning will be Alfred Ausmus, Henry Bledsoe, James Eddy, Derwin Folger, Joe Garner, Don Hayes, Rawlin Harrison, Frank Krhut, Mack Silvertooth, Bill Smith, Don Winkle, Jack Swicegood, and Joe Young. Jerry Zachary, a hard running fullback from Wagoner, was out all season with an injured leg but will be back for the coming season. jwiball FOOTBALL october 17 SCHEDULE September 18 PITTSBURG STATE B Ogtgbgf 23 Warner NORTHERN 'M' JUNIOR COLLEGE ' Warner MURRAY Tishomingo V: September 26 NORTHEASTERN A8aM Miami SOUTHEASTERN STATE November R October 2 Warner OKLAHOMA MILITARY ACADEMY Clafemofe COFFEVVILLE JUNIOR COLLEGE November 13 October 11 Warner BACONE Paul Ables Muskogee Milton Afmstfong E.:g:rlI??1i?rigLM Alfffzfi Ausmus Guard Hazfback Warner enter fl' -can W' gg, 3 Henry Bledsoe Don Butler Connie Coldiron Daryle CUC Jerry Cunningham Defensive Haliback Guard Guard Halfback Halfback vu- T' Bob Davis Gene Davis Dean Eddy James Eddy Jack Everhart Tackle End F ullback Guard Halfback football but l.
