Parents don't real- ly know, or they don't want to accept It. Either way, it usually takes someone else to tell them that their kids are on drugs. At least now if a problem arises, there is somewhere to turn to. Kids Helping Kids is a non-profit organization serving kids, ages 12-22, in the Tri-stote area. The program, started in Florida, was brought to Ohio by reformed drug abusers, and now there is o Kids Helping Kids program in Hebron. The program consists of five phases. A young person will progress through each phase ot his own pace. Phase 1: The newcomer” lives with the fam- ily of on oldcomer”, a youth farther along in the program. During this phase, the newcomer attends the program seven days o week, and is never without his oldcomer. At some point, he will hove earned the right to talk to his parents for 10 minutes o week, and to hove responsibil- ities for chores, such os serving, washing floors, etc. Phase 2: The youth is now permitted to live at home provided that the home environment is free of chemical abuse. If it is not. the youth will continue to live in a foster home. This phase permits the family to begin rebuilding the rela- tionships that were lost during the druggie years”. Second phasers attend the program seven days a week. Phase 3: The youth is permitted to go back to school or work, but continues to attend the pro- gram each day after school and work, and on the weekends.
