The ream began practice in mid-October The first few weeks were nothing bur condition- ing to get rhe reom into good physical shape After many strenuous weelss of practice, rhe wrestling reom was ready to begin their season The Cougars opened their season with a 640 shutout over Dixie Heights The following march was a little rougher, against a reom that would be eventual stare runner-ups, rhe Campbell County Cornels The Cougars would nor be de- nied and defeated the Camels by a slim I Wrestling margin of 30-26 The Cougars swept through their first Tri-match of rhe season doiming victories over Eastern, New Albany, ond Wood ford Co The next march was against tost years District ond Regional Champions, Scott High School This was rhe year for Con- ner however, as they easily defeated the Eagles by a score of 40-30 The Cougars continued being rhe only undefeated reom in Northern Ky. by posting wins over Simon Kenton, Goone Co., East Cenrrol, Lowrenceburg, ond Henry Cloy. Wrestling Their roughest challengers from Ky. were three of rhe finest reams from Lou- isville: Fern Creek, Sr. Xavier, and Trinity. They proved to be no march for rhe highly talented Cougars who outscored their opponers 130 40 The only loss of rhe season for rhe Cougors was dealt to them by Cincinnati Oak Hills, Cincinnati's best ream. The wrestling ream summed their sea son up with a 60-12 white washing of Holmes High School The Cougars season record was 16-1 Troy Cole set two records this year that were previously held by four-rime Wrestling (1) In rhe store finols. rhor wos held or Conner The Cougars faced eight Northern Kentucky oppo- nents with their roughest opposition com- ing from Campbell County The wrestling ream easily defeated their foes, becom- ing the 1980 District Champions Ten of Conner's wrestlers placed in the top four of their individual weight dosses, enabling them to qualify for The Central Jefferson Regional Tournament held at Trinity High School in Louisville, Kentucky. In the Regional Tournament the Cou- gars faced several unknown Louisville opponents. Their roughest competition came from their N K foes os they were upset in the Regional by Campbell Co However the Cougars qualified six wres tiers for the Store Tournament Once again the wrestling ream trovled to Louisville This rime their desti nation wos the stare rournomenr held or Atherton High School. In the first round of action five Cougars won their first march Unfortunately Doren Horris was upset by o wrestler from Ft. Campbell, eliminating him from rhe rournomenr. David Carlson lost his second march, bur he won his next one pladng 7rh in rhe store. Jeff Lawerence mode it all rhe way to rhe stare finals only to be upset by a wrestler from Doss High School. Tom Cole wos State Cham- pion in the 132 pound weight pinning every one of his opponents. After his final march, Tom replied, This rourno- menr isn't so rough!” Troy Cole won rhe State Title in rhe 138 pound weight doss. Tony Jones, favored to win rhe store title in rhe 145 pound weight doss, wos upset and hod to settle for 5rh place.
