Each nine weeks many students strive to earn an A or D average so they may have their name printed on the schools honor roll and in the local newspaper. Very few students can achieve the grades which it takes to be on the All Aâ honor roll and most of these students ore the ones who take such complicated courses such as Calculus, Chemistry 2 and Trigonometry. We at Conner are very proud of those students for they give up much of their own time to keep up their grades. Even though the honor roll holds a long list of names each quarter of the grading period, the biggest list is during the second nine weeks. Each year free Red's tickets are given to those whose composite score adds up to an A or B average during the second nine weeks. This year A and B average students also received an Arby's and Frisch's coupon. Not only does achieving a high scholastic aver- age lead to being on the honor roll each year, it also leads to a better and more fulfilled future. The latest styles on the list which hove hit Conner really big ore the tuxedo look (block pants, o white blouse, ond o bow tie), mini skirts that come in every color, solid or striped, ond leg warmers, worn with o mini skirt or over your jeans. Finally the announcer pronounces Jock Grigson os the new Mr. Teenage Northern Ky. If anyone deserves this title, Jock Grigson does. He works out QVi hours o day, 6 days o week with his talented and devoted training coach. This was Jack's first competition. It was held at Ludlow high school on Jan. 29, 1980. Along with the title of Mr. Teenage Northern Ky., Jack also came home with a beautiful 2'A foot tro- phy. People often ask Jack how he became inter- ested in body-building. Simply enough, he saw pictures of body-builders in books and decided that he wanted to look like them. Also, because his friends told him that he wouldn't amount to anything, he worked harder at it just to prove them wrong. One might think that body-building takes up so much of his time that he wouldn't have room for anything else. Though Jack makes it clear that body-building is his main priority, he does find time to hunt and trap. Jack is striving to win the title Mr. Cincinnatti, and to someday also win Mr. America. With the progress he's making, one wouldnât be sur- prized if he did. Some of the people who were invited were President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy, Governor John Y. Drown and his wife Phyllis George, and our own Conner Senior High School Band. One of the first attractions Conner students noticed once inside the gates was the enormous ball in the sky called the Sunsphere. The members scattered trying to see, buy, and look at everything be- cause they had just one day to capture all that the World's Fair had to offer. The most talked about exhibit among the group was the China Exhibit, a pagoda-like building that housed part of the Great Wall of China. Additional fasinating sights included the gold Inka jewelry from Peru, statues and art objects from ancient Egypt, and Eucalyptus leaves from Australia. Steve Herrmann summed up everyone's opin- ion of the Worldâs Fair when he said, â... and besides just being a whole lot of fun, it was a very educational experience. This year, our new principal Mr. Dill Arnold has come up with the idea of Student of the Week for those students who go above and beyond the call of duty. Each week at Conner, students who work exceptionally hard can be nominated for Stu- dent of the Week by a fellow student or teach- er. At the end of the week, all nominations are taken in and a committee of teachers and guid- ance counselors decide who the next Student of the Week will be. Once you are nominated for this position your accomplishments will be looked at each week until you are voted in for this honor. The lucky student who is picked as Student of the Week receives a certificate for their achievements, an Arby's and Frisch's cou- pon, their picture put in the school hall, and their name announced over the intercom. We are very proud of those students who have been selected as Student of the Week and we would most of all like to thank Mr. Arnold for his support in our school and for giv- ing the Conner student another honor to work for. 1039 Limaburg Rd. Parents don't real- ly know, or they don't want to accept It. Either way, it usually takes someone else to tell them that their kids are on drugs. At least now if a problem arises, there is somewhere to turn to. Kids Helping Kids is a non-profit organization serving kids, ages 12-22, in the Tri-stote area. The program, started in Florida, was brought to Ohio by reformed drug abusers, and now there is o Kids Helping Kids program in Hebron. The program consists of five phases. A young person will progress through each phase ot his own pace. Phase 1: The newcomerâ lives with the fam- ily of on oldcomerâ, a youth farther along in the program. During this phase, the newcomer attends the program seven days o week, and is never without his oldcomer. At some point, he will hove earned the right to talk to his parents for 10 minutes o week, and to hove responsibil- ities for chores, such os serving, washing floors, etc. Phase 2: The youth is now permitted to live at home provided that the home environment is free of chemical abuse. If it is not. the youth will continue to live in a foster home. This phase permits the family to begin rebuilding the rela- tionships that were lost during the druggie yearsâ. Second phasers attend the program seven days a week. Phase 3: The youth is permitted to go back to school or work, but continues to attend the pro- gram each day after school and work, and on the weekends. Phase 4: In addition to going to school and working the youth can put in requests for per- mission to go out with his family and friends from the program. He is now required to be at the program five days a week rather than sev- en. Phase 5: This is the final phase before the youth leaves the program. He is only required to attend the program two afternoons a week and on Saturdays. He can go anywhere with his parents without permission; he con drive with o parent in the cor. It is the preparatory stage for Seven Stepping. The youth Seven Steps when he or she is considered strong enough by the staff to stay ''straight . Seven Stepping consists of o follow up period of six months, during which both the youth and his parents ore required to attend ot least one Friday open meeting o month. For six months the Seven Stepper has to give ot least six hours o week back to the program. No one will be refused admittance to the program due to lock of funds. Seven Steppers raise money by selling items and holding pan- cake breakfasts. The program also receives grants and donations from corporations to help those with financial difficulties. So far, of all those who hove completed the five phases, 83% successfully stay straight. After the six month follow up, there hos been o 100% suc- cess rote. Benefits of the program include staying off drugs, passing school, better family relation- ships, friendships, and happiness. Maybe, but for Pat O'Brien It's making a career as a lead guitarist. Pat has been playing in a band named Sava- tage for about a year now along with his youn- ger brother. Danny, their new bass guitarist. Pat has been individually playing the guitar for approximately 3VS to 4 years. Pat says, It takes a lot of time and devotion to be in a band, not only because you have full time practices four to five times a week, but you also have to do a lot of individual practicing. For the future, Pat plans to make a career out of playing in a band. All of his extra money goes to new equipment and to pay for his classical quitar lessons which he takes at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. For many teenagers Pat's age, being some- one so talented in music is merely a dream. For Pat O'Brien . . . possibly success. Maybe not for all of us, but, as Fred Fields says, It is easy to lose yourself in painting. What makes Fred special is that he sees things differently. He is an artist who works three to four hours a day on art, and usually with eight or nine paintings going at once. Fantasy, Adventure, and American Indi- an scenes are his favorite types of art. In the past several years, Fred has won many blue ribbons at the Boone County Fair for these works. Fred's dream is to design book covers, record jackets and illustrate different types of articles. He has a big head start toward his goal. In the future, don't be surprised if you glance at a book cover and notice the designer's name, Fred Fields. To be o high school football coach, it takes not only patience, but the ability to teach and make people understand, says football coach Dob Lewis. He began his coaching career In 1948 at Marysville, Ohio. In 1946,he coached at Wyom- ing In Cincinnati, and In 1977 he was offered a Job at Conner. It sounded good so I took It, he said. Coach Lewis says he likes it here at Conner because there is a good balance between aca- demics and athletics. Athletics are considered important and the kids are interested and want to excel. He also likes the very supportive ad- ministration. Just this year, he won his 250th game. He considers it a big accomplishment because he didn't think he'd ever get get that far when he started coaching. He says the team has im- proved, but they have their ups and downs with each season. Next year with six returning lettermen, he feels it will be a good year, espe- cially if they can get past the districts. In his spare time. Coach Lewis enjoys reading and playing golf. He also likes to watch other sports on T.V. Coach Lewis plans to continue coaching and teaching for the next two years. In the future, when he retires, he would like to travel and see the country.
