XO! a MARAUDERS OF THE MED The year 1986 was an arduous (me for the men of IJSS CONNOLE. We were aivay from Neu port for 255 days through the year. e departed Newport in the snow on Januan 3 for two months of CarU)bean operations. Operating from Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, we fired our missiles and torpedoes and checked our sonars. Early in Febritaiy, I ' SS CO.WOLE began fire difficult weeks of Refresher Training in the island paradise of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After surriring the gauge-glass fiasco, fuel oil valve leak-off affair and other tests of character, we departed (iitmo and arrived in Newport on March 18. Upon arrival, we learned that our Mediterranean deployment departing in late August was now an Indian Ocean deployment leaving in late June. Prior to this early departure, we participated in Fleetex 11-86 in April. Finally, a frantic three week IMA V resulted in a ship and crew primed for overseas operations. Leaving the I nited States at a time of high tension in the Mediterrcmean, we sailed with some doubting whether the lO ' was our final destination. In April, the United States had undertaken Freedom of Navigation exercises against Lilrya resulting in the destruction of Libyan Gunboats in the GulfofSidra. Many of us relished the thought of another action. USS CONNOLE left Newport on the morning of June 4. At that time, most of us believed we were headed for the Indian Ocean with a Battle Group consisting of USS FORRFSTAl. (CV-59), CSS llAIN- W RIGHT (CG-2H), USS MACDONOCGH (DDG-39), USS SELLERS (DDG-I I), USS THOMAS C. HART (FT- 1092), USS MIL WA UKEE (AOR-4) and USS SU RIB AC HI (AE-26). Joining the seven ship Battle-group in the western Atlantic on a brilliant June day, USS CONNOLE left on her four thousand mile journey to end two weeks later in Augusta Bay, Sicily. And itatrheil the Warships pulling out. to keep this country free. And most of us have read a liook. or heard a lust ' tale. About the men who sail those ships, through lightning, wind or hail. But there ' s a place uithin each ship, that the legends fail to teach. It ' s doun belou the uaterline. and it takes its tiring toll — .1 superheated tiring metal hell, that sailors call ' THE HOLE ' . houses the engines, fed by steam, that make the screics go round. A place of fire and noise and heat, that beats your spirits down W here the boilers are like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam. Are of molded metal gods without remorse, and nightmares in a dream. Whose threat from the fires roar, is like living in doubt. That any minute would with scorn, escape and crush you out. here turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in hell. As ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell. The men who keep the fires lit, and make the engines run. Are strangers to the world of night, and rarely see the sun. They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear. Their aspect pays no living thing, the tribute of a tear. For there ' s not much that men can do, that these men haven ' t done. Beneath the decks, deep in the hole, to make the engines run. And every hour of every day. they keep their watch in hell. For if the fires ever fail, their ship ' s a useless shell. When ships converge to have a war. upon an angty sea. The men below just grimly smile, at what their fate may be. They ' re locked below like men foredoomed, who hear no battle cry. It ' s well assumed that if they ' re hit, the men below u ill die. For every days ' a ivar down there, tcheu the gages all read red. Twelve hundred pounds of heated steam can kill you mighty dead. So if you ever write their sons, or try to tell their tale. The very words would make you hear a fired furnace ' s lonely wail. And people as a general rule, don ' t hear of the men of steel. So little is heard of the place that sailors fearfully call ' THE HOLE ' But I can sing about this place, and tty to make you see. The hardened life of the men down there, ' cause one of them is me! ' I ' ve seen those sweat soaked heroes work, in superheated air. To keep their ship alive and right, though no one knows they ' re there. AUhough not eveiy sailor can be singled out, this ceremony recognized the special people that make USS CONNOLE GREAT. .4A EVENING TO REMEMBER While anchored in Antalya, Turkey USS CONNOLE hosted an important diplomatic reception for the Governor of Antalya Province and the military Commander of the area. Over fifty local dignitaries attended the event which brought the rare appearance of alcohol aboard CONNOLE. The extravaganza was a night to remember and the Supply Department did a particularly outstanding job. The food was delicious and the music by ETC Houston thrilled the guests. The reception helped to develop close ties between the people of Antalya and the men of CONNOLE. Antalya was a dif- ficult place to leave. The anticipation of returning to Netvport was almost over- whelming. We could not wait. FACES OF CONNOLE HOMEWARD BOUND The final leg. the etid of the cruise, .4 Six Fleet iiill hear the news.
