Big Red Offense On The Go Conncrsville improved its record of 1958 but still could not break even in the won-lost column. Their record was 4-5 and two of the losses were decided b} ' single touchdowns. When a football team is winning it is much easier for the team to be up for every game. However, this year the Big Red got off to a bad start and still wound up with a respectable record. This year ' s squad was composed of ten seniors, all of whom saw plenty of action. Team speed proved to be an advantage on both offense and defense against heavier teams. A dangerous passing attack was added to the Spartan offense and it proved very effective. Seniors lost in graduation were Loren Stanley, Chuck Cramer, Nelson Salyers, Keith Lewis, Steve House, Tom Welsh, Terry Churchill, Jack Ross and Herman Craig. Many underclassmen saw heavy action and will return to give the Big Red a large group of returning lettermen. Some of the highlights of the 1959 season were the wins over Rush ' ille, Sey- mour and Martinsville. The Spartans were also the only team to score more tlian one touchdown against Columbus. If a strong defensive unit can be found by Coach Jake Inman, the Spartans of ' 60 could prove to be really rugged. This all adds up to bright hopes for the future for the Men of Sparta. Page Sixty-Eight The defensixc unit came to llie iLstuc tluni ' L; llie Riislnillc game and stopped tlie Lions cold in the fourth c|uarter. Third row — Coach Harry Brandley, Loren Stanley, Charlie Williams, Jim Morrison, Al Brown, Gary Good, Don Entner, and Coach Paul Heaton. I960 Track Team Best In History CHS should have one of the best track team ' s in the school ' s history this year. The track program at Conners- ville High School has been in a rebuilding stage for three years and the power is just beginning to show for Coach Paul Heaton this year. Heaton took over as head track coach in 1957 and has gradually improved his teams each year. Last year ' s squad lost one meet and the team was represented by two men in the regional meet. Tom Welch is one of the returning sectional winners out to break records in the high hurdles and the high jump this year. Senior Letterman Loren Stanley is caught at the right moment clearing the high jump bar at 5 ' 10 . Tom Moose Welsh is far ahead of the field in the high hurdles during a tough meet with Waldron. Loren Stanley, the team ' s leading point maker last year is out to better himself this season. Stanley and Welch are three year veterans. Gary Good, a sophomore who had hoped to break the shot put record was ineligible for the first part of season and was sorely missed. Mike Bach, who is formerly from Michigan, carries high hopes in the broad jump and the high jump. Returning pole- vaulters are Jack Ross, Nelson Salyers, and Gary Adams. Terry Churchill will be out to better the quarter mile record along with Charlie Williams. Carrying the burden of the distance runs are Eddie Ball, Steve House, Jim Parker, and Bill Loper. Ernie Sleet leaps high and wide for a sure place in the broad jump.
