Football Squad Small But Mighty This was a tough season for the Spartan football squad. They finished with a Z-7 record, which cer- tainly was not deserved. Many of the games were lost in the waning moments of the game, and the Spar- tans were in the heat of battle throughout. The spirit on this team was very high, as the Big Red never stopped fighting. But football games are not won on spirit alone, it takes some breaks, and these. the Spartans were definitely short on this season. This squad was very light, but they made up for the weight disadvantage by speed and hustle. How- ever, this did hurt them, especially in late stages of the game. Graduating seniors on the team include Ed New- ton, Ierry Humes, Howard Neff, Bill Schrepferman, Jimmy Cough, Cary Gilbert, VVendell Hurst, and Mike Thomas. Many underclassmen saw plenty of action, and this should give the Spartans some good experience in the near future. Among next year's returning lettermen are linemen Loren Stanley, Steve House, lack Ross, Tom Welsh, and Terry Churchill. Stanley and Churchill play end, House and VVelsh tackle, and Ross as a guard. The backfield corps will be led by Mike Evans, Kenny Evans, David Short-all halfbacks. The quarterback chores will be handled by Mike Aldridge and Larry Masters. Larry saw some action last season as a freshman, and has quite a bit of potential. Mike and Kenny did considerable ball-toting for the Big Red last season, and they will return for two more seasons. David Short saw plenty of action in the backfield and also in the line. VVith these lettermen returning, Coach Iake Inman will definitely have some experienced material with which to work. Such was not the case this past season. In addition to these players, there are many others who saw considerable action and will be in for fulltime duty this fall. There is also a fine-looking crop of players coming up from the freshman team to give these veterans a battle for the starting positions. lt all adds up to an improved showing for the Big Red of 1959. The best of luck is wished to the squad by the Cohiscan staff and the Senior class of 1959. Loren Stanley clears the bar in the high jump. Much is expected from this Junior in his final season. For many years, track has been a declining sport on the C.H.S. schedule. However, it is be- ginning to rebound and interest is being revived. Coach Paul Heaton has developed a rebuilding program, and it has been making progress. If this progress continues. the Spartans should be developing some of the finest squads in the conference. Three of Heaton's prized performers are Max Brandlev, who holds the C.H.S. record for his performance in the low hurdles, Loren Stanley, who has done an excellent job in the high jump, and Icrry Humes, who runs in the dash events. It all adds up to the fact that C.H.S. is looking to the future to develop outstanding track teams. Max Brandley speeds away from the field in the low hurdles. Max showed his heels to competitors in many meets as he holds the C.H.S. record. YYith a fine group of underclassnien, Connors- x'ille's golf squad is making a fine comeback after a couple of rather lean years. The squad, led by Robert Bunyard. Bob Butcher, Ted Harris, and Steve Dorsett, finished fourth in the conference meet this year. They' also were very impressive in their spring rnatchcs. Since these boys still have years of eligibility remaining, CHS's golf picture appears very bright. liach fall, one finds the CHS harriers working hard at Roberts Park. This sport is the inost gruelling of any in the high school athletic program. The cross country nien had a rough season this rear, as they placed tenth in the conference nicet. However. CHS has always fielded fine squads and it is expected that this relapse will only be a temporary one. The team is coached by llarry Brandley. and the graduating seniors are: George Henry. lan Keller. lack llunt. Kenny Strawn. and Albert Brown. Without a doubt, some of these boys will help bring baseball back to the place where it belongs. Like track, baseball has been going down in popularity at C.H.S. But without a doubt it will rebound soon and take its place as a popular sport during the spring. Coach Howard Plough has a fine group of underclassmen who should help the Big Red in upcoming years. In addition to this, the city has embarked on a fine baseball program for the youngsters in Connersville. This program should begin to affect the C,H.S. program shortly, and it will give Coach Plough boys who are quite used to competition. Kenny Strawn, George Henry, Dave Hamil- ton, Gary Crowe. and Merrill Reece are some of the Seniors who have helped the Big Red the past few seasons. and with some of the fine prospects coming up we predict that baseball will once again gain its height in popularity. Both of these players reached the semi-finals before being defeated. lu Coiniersyillc. tennis is one of the sports which is making thc best gains in popularity.
