Seven lnindred voices from the fifteen participat- ing schools presented a program of a state selected list of songs. One of the purposes of the festival is to prepare for the all-state chorus which is featured vearlv at the Indiana State Teachers Association fall meeting in Indianapolis. Only students who have sung in a district festival are eligible for the state chorus. Another purpose is the social value of meeting and working with students from other schools. Between the afternoon rehearsal and the night performance here, a dinner and dance at the Y. Nl. C. A. were enioyed. Under the direction of Nlr. Paul Bechtel. the vocal department has won honors and favorable comment during the year. As part of the Christmas program for the school, the Nladrigals sang the Christmas storv in music, with Franklin Mattig as narrator. Adding variety to the program, were numbers by the girls' sextet. In competition this spring, the Madrigal Singers and the girls' sextet won first division rating at Muncie. The sextet was sent to the state contest, where they won third division honors. Ioan Gedling, who also won first division honors at Muncie and the privilege of going to the state, won top honors there as a soloist. Throughout the vear the department provides special numbers for various clubs and organizations of the community. At graduation time baccalaureate and commencement find singers again contributing to the programs. SEXTET Wing, Durham, Kunkel, Pohlrnan, Starr. CEmsweller not in picturel. Co Strut and Fret started its ycar's activities with the production of a social comedy, One Foot In Heaven. Since the story of the play took place in ISSO it was necessary for some of the props and costumes to be made by members of the club. Giving a play is hard work, but because this one was such a success, the club had a party at Manlove Park to celebrate. Later in the year the group gave three one-act plays directed by members of the club. The plays, His First Shave, directed by Patricia Hurelyq Tell-Tale Heart, by Virginia Davis, and i'Napoleon's Barber, by Myra Grant, were presented to a small but appreciative audience. To climax the year's activities everyone traveled to Miami University to see Don Iuan In Hell, acted by Agnes Moorchead, Charles Boyer, Charles Laughton, and Sir Cedric Hardwick. Strut and Fret is one of the oldest clubs of Senior High School. To become eligible to be a member of Strut and Fret one must be a junior or a senior. Membership is obtained by try-outs or by a point system set up by the National Thespian Society. THE NATIONAL THICSPIAN Society is an educational organization of actors and actresses. Twenty-one new members were initiated this year into the nation-wide, honorary organization. Membership is secured by a point system. By acting, working on stage crew, and by applying make-up. points are obtained for honorary stars. The sponsor this year, the seventh one the club has had, is Mr. Richard Bengtson. Tri- Hi- Y expanded in activities and interest this year partly because of the better meeting facilities offered them by the new Y. M. C. A. Upholding its creed to create, maintain, and extend, high standards of Christian character. the club entertained twenty-five unclerprivileged girls with a Christmas dinner party. Later in the year they made and sold red and white shakers for the Pepnoerats to use during the sectional. Based on a new and clever theme, the Tri-Ili-Y Sadie Hawkins Dance was a big success. This spring, fourteen of the forty-eight members traveled to Greensburg to attend the annual Hi-Y, 'I'ri-I Ii-Y district conference. Hi-Y has continued to follow its ideals of building Christian character in its members. In line with giving service, the club held its annual Christmas party for underprivileged boys. The party, held at the Y. M. C. A. was a great success. Putting up and taking down the canvas at the football field and passing out cancer drive posters were other helping hand acts. During the year the club bought two film strips for the library concerning Pan American countries. .l. C. L. highlighted its years activities with the celebration of Latin XVeelc. AROUND ABOUT the last of August, anyone passing bv the football field can hear the thuds of falling bodies and squeak of aching muscles. Yes. the gridiron boys are at it again. And each year there's a new bunch to break in for break npr-the freslnnen. Getting the squeak out of their muscles and the kinks out of their brains is the first thing. and after that work really starts in earnest. According to the coaches this vear's bunch really had the talent-and they showed it, too. Their record of two wins and two losses is certainly not to be frowned upon. since both losses were to New Castle, a very powerful team. lfreshman Spartans edged Shelbyville l'5 to l2 and scored a verv impressive Z7 to 0 victorv over llibberd of Richmond. The full count showed two won and three lost. but two of the losses were to the same outfit-New Castle-which always manages to turn out powerful aggregations. A noteworthy victory for Coach Dellonevs men was over the linps of Richmond. another traditionallv strong outfit. ' A ZS-0 victory over Greensburg and a I9-7 loss to Shelbyville were outcomes of S. C. C. contests. As can be judged bv the group picture. a B team is not just that in Connersville. Some of its men play' with the varsity squad as reserves: some of its eleven are drawn from the freshman when substitutes are called for. Xlax Brown was fifth in the low hurdles, and Don Bone captured second honors in the half-inile. ln the sectional meet 12 points were scored. Big Ilal Beatv won the shot pntg the team of Don Bone. Irvin XVilliams, Sonny lack, and lerry Young stepped out to take the half-mile relay.
