Named by Luanna's father, who took for his inspiration the legend that told of a swan which sang a last song before dying, this book shall tell ofthe glories of those whose school days are over. Y . 1931 SENIOR SWAN SONG 1931 Hzktory of the Class of 1931 A Ugly duckiingsi ' . Clean out of the way!',- Who do you think you are? Such were the phrases hurled at the 147 freshmen Cugly ducklingsj who entered Oonnersville high school in the fall of 1927. Only eighty-five of these ugly ducklings have paddled their way to the senior class of 1931, Together with the twenty-one more classmates who have joined their group they have changed to beautiful swans Cat least we hope their minds have feathered outb. For four years the class of '31 has made its way through many trials and tribulations, as well as joys. Activities ranged from physical and mental work to social affairs. Some swam in the Lake of Sports. Six seniors, who began their career on the scrub team where they took all the bumps and knocks, helped the Spar- tan basketball team win glory. The same ones also served on the football team. George Kee was prominent on the track team. Elizabeth Bullard proved to be the duckiest girl tennis player and received a letter as an award, the first one ever given to a girl in Connersville high school. Edwarzl Cotton was also awarded a letter in tennis. Fifteen seniors blossomed forth in the plumage of the National Honor Society. Some quacking has meaning. That of the six senior debaters surely did uave when they persistently tried to prove their points in all debates. And Donald Turner placed second at the district oratorical contest on the Constitution. ' In keeping with the legendary idea that swans are musical, many seniors glided on the Sea of Music, Carlysle Leadbetter winning special recognition as prima donna of China Shop . ' Other activities in which members of this class were some birds C011- sisted of the Aeneid, Art club, Hi-Y, and Strut and Fret. The leads of Peg O' My Heart . the play given by the last club, were taken by Mary Green and Marjorie Miller. Lily Custer, Kathryn Johnson, Georgina Beaumont, and Robert Brockley were leading characters of t'Page the Princef, The class appropriately chose green and white sweaters Cwhich color combination suggests a white swan sailing along on green waterl. Caps for the boys and tams for the girls were selected to Htop off the costumes. ln the junior year most of the pinfeathers had disappeared, and Francis Allison was elected swan master, with Mary Green as chief assistant. Mar- jorie Miller and Francis Miller were other officers. That year the class gave a most beautiful Junior-Senior, with the gym blossoming forth into a garden of lavender and gold. In the senior year the senior play was the climax of the activities of the class. Throughout the four years, the class of '31 has at one time and another been under the wings of Miss Mary Ann Scholl, Miss Alice Katterjohn, Mr. T. W. Barnett, Mr. V. D. Barker, Miss Rachel llull, and Miss Edith Hopkins, the last four of whom bore most of the responsibility. Miss Mary Rieman helped with the finishing touches before the swans were ready to spread their wings and soar away. Now the class of '31 pauses to bid you adieu and goes to test its wings in the outside world. Page Two I gm? E r-rw 5, r 3,1 Y ' ,r.i, is 1, 13, v 4 -. ' -' 5,41 .- . Backfield- Kee, Craig, Ennis, Shellhouse. SPARTAN SPORTS 4 A light but fast team carried the high school colors through the 1930 football season. What was lacking in weight was made up for in aggressive- ness and speed. During the season, the Spartans scored 108 points to their opponents' 36. Six members of this fighting team, three line men and three in the back- field, are to be lost by graduation,-Be-ll, George, Halberstadt, Shellhouse, Kee, and Craig, the one man who has played o-n the team for four years. Spring practice has brought out some new material which is showing up unusually well, and another successful eleven is expected to be on the gridiron to repre- sent Senior high school next fall. - RECORD OF SEASON Connersville, 275 Columbus, 95 here. The girls made a clean sweep of their matches both times, while' the boys lost both matches at Con- nersville, but divided honors with Richmond there. 'With the advent of spring, racquets were again brought out, and practice started' in the gym. Elizabeth Bullard and Edward Cotton, who won their letters in tennis last year, played their last matches for C. H. S. this spring. Three Spartan track men qualified for the State meet last year, although the squad as a whole had a poor season, not winning any meet. Kee and Dil- lingham were the only veterans of marked ability who came out for the 1931 track events. Four meets, all away from home, were scheduled for the thinly clads. t Intramural athletics for girls was provided during the year by baseball and basketball league tournaments, with teams picked from gym classes. Even after the varsity schedule and the tournaments were over, the effects of the malady stuck to some ofthe students. Freshman and sophomore home rooms organized their respective teams and formed the After-Supper league. Once a week they engaged in rough and tumble games, the main purpose of which was to uncover prospects for next year's Junior Spartans. Winning thirteen games out of their sixteen-game schedule, Coach Ken- neth Cook 's Junior Spartans for 1930-31 went through a most successful sea- son. The three games lost were the reserves of the varsities of the schools played. The Juniors scored 432 points to their opponents' 290. Two of their members were taken on the first string for tournament play. Making themselves known in basketball circles as a team that would fight to the last, Coach M. C. Pruitt 's Spartans Went through a hard schedule with a marked degree of success, but Lady Luck refused to smile at tourna- ment time, and the end came in the regional. The season's record showed sixteen of the twenty scheduled games on the victory side of the ledger. Six of these Well known boys will be lost by graduation,-Shellhouse Kee, llalberstadt, Bell, George, and L. Craig. 1 SPARTAIN RECORD 'Uv ' C. H. S. Opponents C. H. S. Opponents C. H. S.
