At Connelley the future mechanics in the building trades are given an Opportunity to work with every tool and material utilized in the various trades. lt would be impossible to enu- merate the many different operations the boys experience in the pursuit of their particular vocations. Generally speaking a potential me- chanic entering this field must have good health, the ability to transfer related knowledge to a practical situ- ation, and be familiar with the tools of his trade. Also he must possess the ability to read blue prints and lay- out dimensions. Good coordination of mind and hand, some artistic ability, endurance, reliability and good judge- ment are further qualifications for these trades. fa.. Mr. Jesse A. Hiller Mr. John C. ELECTRICAL TRADE ELECTRICAL TRADES The electrical and electronic fields offer the young aspirant a wide range of opportunities not only in employ- ment but also to develop with ever- growing fields. The vast application of electrical appliances and heavy elec- trical equipment is another factor in- fluencing the demand for young elec- tricians. Connelley offers a boy a wide range of learning experiences in these various fields. A maintenance electrician is given the opportunity to study every aspect of heavy electrical machinery. The general electrician isgivenacom- plete course in the installation of commercial and domestic wiring. The radio and television technician on the other hand learns how to test circuits and isolate .defects in both radio and television sets. To succeed in this field a tech- nician must have a better than average scientific and mathematical ability, a firm knowledge of trade terms, tools, and materials, and a working knowl- edge of associated trades. The machinist, the pattern maker, the welder, and the foundry man, all contribute to the satisfaction of this demand. The prospective metal worker at Connelley is exposed to a wide variety of applicable experiences, The ma- chinist is taught to operate all the basic machine tools. The pattern maker is exposed to the making of wooden patterns of various degrees of com- plexity for use in the construction of casting. The welder is given ample experience to make various types of welds on a variety of metals utilizing either gas or electric, The foundry man on the other hand is taught the actual construction of casting from a number of different types of metals. A young man entering this field should have physical strength, manual dexterity, and above average talent for judging shape and size. He should also possess a good understanding of written specifications, a knowledge of shop mathematics, in addition to a wide knowledge of wood working tools and the properties of metals. It is the work of the commercial artist to visually introduce these products to potential users. Connelley gives the young artist an opportunity to learn how ideas are presented and vizualized from the ad- vertising viewpoint. He also learns how to create and design illustrations of copy for advertisements in news- papers, magazines, booklets, and posters. The prospective commercial artist must have a flare for arrange- ments in pattern and design, creative talent, and a close coordination be- tween head and hand. There is a constant need for printed materials and printers. The opportu- nity, to perform all of the duties concerned with the hand and machine setting of type, is given the boy at Connelley. The young printer assem- bles type and cuts in chases and per- forms duties prior to the actual print- ing operations. He also learns how to use various hand, bench, and machine tools. Constant changes in equipment, tools, and consumer goods creates an unlimited demand for good draftsmen. A prospective draftsman at Connelley learns to prepare detail drawings and working plans for engineering and man- ufacturing purposes. A young drafts- man should have a good knowledge of draftsman's instruments and athor- ough knowledge of mathematics, along with a skill in drawing and a good sense of proportion. Mr. D. At Connelley the fledgling mechanic is given an opportunity to learn how to locate quickly the cause of mechan- ical failures and difficulties. The repair and adjustment of the clutch, transmission, differential, and the re- placement of bearings and piston rings are just a few of the operations the young mechanic is trained to do. ln addition, the boy learns how to diagnose electrical difficulties by visual inspec- tion and by using various testing de- vices. The repair and installation of ignition systems, starters, coils, panel instruments, and other electrical de- vices are all in a day's work for the beginning mechanic. To succeed in this trade a boy must have a high degree of mechan- ical ability and interest, in addition to a good knowledge of the funda- mentals of electricity. A logical rea- soning ability plus initiative and en- durance will assure the young me- chanic of added success in his field. , --E..
