'IWE TY FIVE YEAR 0F PIIIIGIIESS AI II R IWLNTY FIVL YLARS Iwo deeades before Connelley s eornerstone was la1d members of the Board of Indueatlon were fllaklllg plans for the tralnlng of skllled tradesmenln Plttsburgh the lndustrml Center of the World As the need for sk1lled workers lnereased these men who had great falth 1n vocatlonal trammg be gan to plan a school to serve 111 the boys who were xnterested 1n beeom1ng skxlled eraftsmen The present s1te of Connelley was selected because of 1ts central locat1on Cl1fford B Lonnelley who 1n trodueed Voeatlonal Tralnlng to Western Pennsylvanla also contrlbuted hls name to the school Dr 1 H Turner pr1ne1pal of Ralston lndustrlal School whlch preceded C onnelley beeame the flrst prlncxpal Dr Turner I3 also cred1ted wxth 1ntroduc1ng vocatlonal tralmng to the students ofthe Pntsburgh area Lonnelley was opened to 1400 studentsm September of 1930 Mr D C Elllnger sue eeeded Dr Iurner 1n 1941 as Lonnelley s admlmstratlve leader Upon Mr Iellmger s retlrement 1n June of 1954 Mr II W Ilosey assumed the dutles of th1s offlee A hlstory of a school can best be told by 1ts contrlbutlons to the youth and adults lf has served In the f1eld of adult edue atlon Connelley has offered the people of thls area an opportumty to lmprove the1r knowledge 1n teehmcal and trade work dur1ng the even1ng Durmg World War ll when a speclal phase of adult tramlng eame 1nto exlstence known as the War Productlon T ra1n1ng Program Connelley tramed hundreds of lndtvlduals to take the1r plaee 1n mdustry At the conclus1on of the war part of the fac1l1t1es of the school were made avallable to returnlng veterans who were deslrous of taklng eourses to better enable them to re enter e1v1l1an l1fe A valuable part of Lonnelley s h1gh school program 18 IIS Co op program On th1s QOODEZIQIIVC Part Tlme Tralmng Program boys 1n pa1rs alternate at school and at work on a two week eycle Thus 1n school tralnlng IS supplemented by valuable 1ndustr1al work experlenee Th1s program has enabled many upper grade boys at Lonnelley to earn wh1le they learn lt also has been the channel through wh1ch many boys have entered 1nto full tlme jobs after graduatlon The past twenty f1ve years have seen mueh accompl1shed at Connelley lt 1s the hope of the gradu atmg elass of 1955 that the future w11l see Connelley rendermg the same hlgh quallty serv1ce to gen erat1ons of the P1ttsburgh area youth
