Juniors won the pep as- sembly competition and nosed out the sophomores for the Spirit banner. Seniors were third in the week long competition and freshmen, fourth. Ra yalty Reigns On A Paper Moon Cheryl Caraway and Jamie Person were selected to head the Homecoming Week roy- alty. After weeks of anticipation, the selection of the new Miss North Franklin to succeed Queen Molly Calfee was made. The cro- wning of Miss Jodi Hudlow, the new queen who will repre- sent Connell in other community celebrations and at the state Junior Miss Pageant in January, touched off the chain of planned weekend events. For the first time, commercial carnival midway rides were rented and set up in addition to local booths. The Saturday parade was expanded and enlarged to include several more visiting and home floats and marching units, including the Tri-C ity Columbians and the Othello High School Marching Band. If the boys were a bit indignant with the change-about, their minds were ea.sed by the great music of Kid Coco. Th b d ' ' e an was proclaimed the best that Connell High School has ever heard. For the short-of-breath and hayfever victims there was cool, clear apple cider and doughnuts to revive them. ! iles - Senior Ball Is Unique Senior Ball adds a touch of extra class to the year as the girls flaunt shiny evening dresses and special hair- dos, and the guys don dinner jackets, ruffled shirts and bowties. It's a whole night's adventure and not just a danceg exploring the fine restaurants of the Tri-Cities, tasting the flaming entrees, visiting with friends, and dancing, too, is all a part of this unique experience. At least that's how the senior class of 1974 will re- member their Senior Ball, A Stair- Way to Heaven held at the Rivershore in Richland, with entertainment by Snickers . Highlight of the evening Was the pre- sentation of royaltyg Queen Luvy Benavides and King Randy Odom, Princess Vicki Matsumura and Prince Chris Randall, and Princess Pamela Scharnhorst and Prince Eliazar Gonzalez. 5, 1LeftJ Queen Luvy's glorious moment fBelowJ Gold tinsel, velvet ribbon, golden roses, stars and candles were keepsake rnomentoes for seniors Nolan and Jessica. .-- ' ,, :E41fme11+m1:M- si wggz i liff Fei 2' .. fsagi i- ms. . ni k: m y g 'xii ,i tial' ': ' , 9 fLeftJ Strains of Stairway to Heaven are dedicated to the royalty dance. 24 Time in a Bottle The theme Time in a Bottle, pink balloons, and hot pink and black streamers combined to brighten the mid-winter night of the Class of 1975's Junior Prom. Another anxious moment was the announce- ment of the royaltyg Queen Tera Burton and King Mark Heider fshown below, oenterj, and Princesses Rhonda Taylor and Lilly Pederson, and Princes Terry Cook and Tim Davis. Spring and Sweethearts I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song was the theme of the 1974 Sweetheart Dance. The early May dance utilized rainbow-hued streamers and multi-color- ed helium balloons, and the dance floor was surrounded by white fencing and huge springtime murals. The Royalty was selected by competition that included: siphon tube-setting, nail- pounding, and shot-putting for the girlsg and egg-separating, diaper-changing, and knitting for the boys. 4See pictures of the events on the FHA pagey. I FRESHMEN 0 Class of '7 7 ' Taking It Easy The freshmen of '74' haven't done very much this year, ex- cept to gain the title of a bunch of good sports. They took what the other classes dished out to them with a smile on their faces. Their fearless leaders Were: President Donna Montierth, Vice President Mike Merrill, Sexy Secretary Kelly Timmons, Treasurer Les Loeber, and Student Council Representative Ross Lyle. They didn't Win very many contests, but did place third in the egg throwing competition during homecoming week. The upper classmen found out that they didn't make very good slaves and let them go. , ,Aww - .W my . K 'fwiwi , ,:.- 4? Q wr Z wi . The Swing Choir entertained at city banquets and jun- ior high concerts as well as adding their special touch to the high school concerts. The Stage Band was in- vited to play for Kahlotus' Senior Ball and worked Hard to rebuild the group in anticipation of returning to stage band competition. The Swing Choir's step towards bigger and better sounds was the purchase of a new sound system. Student Council lnitiates Facelift Behind the initiative and concern of President Jim Brock, the Student Council put everything together to bring about a change in the appear- ance and attitude of C. H. S. Sometimes this meant working after school and on weekends. The most noticeable projects were the repainting of hall lockers and the addition of vending machines. But new ideas were always emerg- ing at student council meetings and from them came: a tape player for the student center, partial graveling on back school roads, more litter barrels, work on a student handbook, exchange student priogram, a. lounge area to be included in the new enclosed gym area, reconsider- ation of a fourth wrestling cheerleader in 1974-7 5 a.nd alot, lot more. Builds Interest In Agriculture The Future Farmers of America continued to have an out- standing cha.pter under the direction of advisor John Mus ser a.nd president Tim Davis. The F. F.A. and vocational ag- riculture program tea.ches the development of agricultural methods in soil, crop and livestock production. The em- phasis is on learning and application, home projects pro- vide the best experience. It is hard but rewarding work. Still there a.re opportunities for fun such as: trial rides, F. F.A. basketball competition between area chapters, hamburger feeds, helping plan and put on the Sweetheart Dance, and the parent-member awards ceremony. Members exhibited a.t fairs, took part in running concession stands at athletic events, competed in soil a.nd livestock judging contests, sponsored their own judging' contest and actively observed the National F. F.A. Week in Febraury. Annual awards went to Jed Bauermeister, DeKalb Award, Mike Wieseler, Sta.r Chapter Farmer and Burl Booker, Star Greenhand. Several proficiency awards were present- ed in different categories. At the state level, Buddy Miller finished second in the public speaking competition and was also awa.rded the State Farmer degree, a state award based on achievement. In leaving Connell . It is my hope that vocational agriculture and F. F.A. at CHS will continue to grow into one of the better programs in the state. There is no doubt in my mind that with the present officers and membership this achieve- ment is not impossible I wish to all of the students the best of luck and my heart is with you. Sincerely John Musser Honor Society Brains, brains, where are the brains? Everyone has a brain but remarkably few take the time or trouble to develop it. Yet, there are a few who do their best to learn the lesson of the mind. The group that best represents the academic achievement, as well as show responsibility at home, in church, at school, and in the com- munity, is the National Honor Society. The Honor Society includes much or most of the leaders for the other clubs and organizations. Members are accepted after close examination and must keep up their qualifications to stay in. Perhaps the secret of the Honor Student is simply that, It takes a lot of hard work to be smart. This year's activities included: scholarships to Vicki Seuell and Jodi Hudlowg sponsoring a dance, and repainting and designing the community-highway sign. Sandy Sackmann and Vicki Matsumura were selected to apply for National Honor Scholarships. Officers were: President - David Bauermeisterg Vice-president - Jodi Hudlowg Secretary - Vicki Seuellg Treasurer - Cheryl Shockey. Honors 81 A wards To receive an honor an individual must do something that is honorary or honorable. This may indeed sound easy but it is in reality often difficult to accomplish something outstandingg harder still for others to recognize the achievement as worthy of honor or praise. Knowing that someone will undoubtably be forgotten on our list, none the less, we would like to pay special homage to the fol- lowing students that displayed distinction. These pupils by bringing honor to themselves, also bring honor to our school and community. fOthers that deserve recognition can be found on almost every page of this bookb. This team, that went on to place 12th in state, did so with- out the aid of any Seniors. They were the smallest team, consisting of only seven boys and one girl, but they were mightier than most. Besides doing competition against such schools as Othello, Colfax, Kamiakin, Hanford, and Richland, they also did battle against the other fall sport - football. This often found the Cross Country team coming up short with fans, but yet they trudged on. On and on they Went over rugged, hilly, or sandy courses, to try and get the best time. So, they are not appreciated to the fullest degree, but their accomplishment of 12th in state is one to be proud of. M SPONSORED BY W D. D. Victory was sweet for the Eagles who for the last few years have consistently placed among the tournament leaders, but until this year have never brought home the State Wrestling Class A Championship trophy. There were no individual weight championsg the title was won rather through balanced strength and togetherness as the Eagles ran away with the team championship by amassing an all-time scoring record of 63 points. Adding to the excitement, Coach Lee Hall was awarded the Class A Wrestling Coach of the Year title. In regular season matches Connell ended with another winning season. Honors went to Kent Mackay and Eliazar Gonzalez, named co-captains, for their leadership and dedication, and to Kevin Jenks, two year state contender and inspirational wrestler. Six of Connell's ten state wrestlers are shown in regular and state mat action. It was the second year of state competition for Chico Mata, Kevin and Eliazar Gonzalez. That organization? - the Girls' Athletic Association, coach- ed by Mrs. David Mudra.. Less attention was given events with other schools, as the group was large enough this year to have a very ample in- tramural program, especially in softball and badminton. Interest was low in other schools. Special awards given were: Volleyball - Captain, Rhonda Taylorg Inspirational, Becki Bongersg and Most Valuable Player, Julie Jenks. The volleyball team's record includ- ed more wins than losses, yet they failed to qualify for league, in a close race. The consolation round pitted them against Garfield, to whom they lost 24 - 41. However, winning is not the important thing, it's how you play the game, and our girls did a fine job, for which they should be commended. Fans have not always been a thriving affair at the girls' games, but this year there was a pick-up in attendance. Hopefully, this will continue to grow in popularity, and attract even more fans. After a torrid start Lady Luck deserted the youthful Eagles of Coach Darreld Lookabill. Relying on base running and consistent pitching to terrorize the opponent was the basis of the Eagle attack. Bat power, however, remained a significant pro- blem in the crucial games. The team took its first road trip during the spring break, playing Yakima Valley teams. An- other first was Connell's first baseball tournament. Rain falling all weekend failed to dampen the spirit and enthusiasm at the tourney. The Eagles finished second in league to leader DeSales with a 7-3 record. Against tough com- petition, including AAA schools, Connell main- tained a winning season record of 16-11. Captain Jamie Person and inspirational Sam Erdman re- ceived the team awards. Selected to the Southeast A League All-Star Team were Karl Eppich, Benny Benavides, Eliazar Gonzalez, and Jamie Person, honorable mention.
