AL ToM v - S KOINE from the Greek word koinos signifying democracy, thus common to all. NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT Four years linking matriculation and commencement comprise our tenure at Connecticut College. Some of the best times of our lives, these years are certain- ly crucial to our maturity and direction. In hopes of capturing different aspects of Some of the best times of our lives our experience here, photographers dutifully clicked away, freezing for posterity a glimpse of our community. This section testifies to the colorful period of our stay: included is a sample of our activities, our feelings, and our lives. Whether reading a book, enjoying a drink, playing a game, or making a friend, a Camel is quite active. It is only necessary to reach out and seek what is hidden. Each individual can discover an interest or goal. The interest may be in a person, the goal for a class presidency. No matter what, the opportunities pur- sued are diverse, and the talents brought It is the extent of extracurricular activities that animates much of our campus to them very admirable. It is the extent of extracurricular activities that animates much of our campus and affords a more subjective challenge than academics. How often get involved is echoed lends credence to the value of non-academic concerns. College is freedom and responsibility. College is a search for identity. College is people and courses, parties and music, trials and tribulations. Above all, college is a unified community gathered to share knowledge, to test ideas, and to promote learning. Few of us will remain unchanged. People, young and old, form and create this everchanging community. As we strive to achieve different heights, we are inspired by friends and faculty. Our goals .. . the continued reason to smile the skies, our aim the stars. Throughout these pages one image repeats: the smile. Some touched us, some strengthened us, and others forced a smile in return. The prevalence of this golden reaction is its expressive power and its fundamental ap- peal to human nature. One special quality of Connecticut College is the continued reason to smile. Surely, there are strug- gles, setbacks, and sadness too. But following the rough times will come the triumphs, and invariably the smiles. Possibly the greatest reward of our time passed here is not a diploma, but the respect and love accorded from friendship. Although each defines friendship differently, all agree to its necessity and worth. The presence of a friend renders troubled times easier and events more special. Our col- leagues enlighten and challenge, sur- k ...anatmosphere conducive to growth and friendship. - prise and encourage us. Indeed, com- panions provide the cohesion to relate . the collection of good and bad times, . lo consummate our achievements with their presence and support. Here we - are fortunate to inherit and bequeath an atmosphere conducive to growth - and friendship. T e e 1 Just as friendship is a necessity in fulfilling a college career, SO too is in- dividuality. Time, space, and silence to separate ourselves from the crowd while remaining a part of it. At Con- necticut College this opportunity to develop and pursue personal endeavors exists. Our small size facilitates individuality as well as a closeness of community. As some of these photographs suggest, it is through a conception of ourselves that we learn to adapt to the crowd. By Il ':' 'Ii;' .,,. J . To emerge confident and apt in our abilities, ready to confront and master future challenges, is one legacy of Connecticut College. To leave equipped with a catalogue of memories and dreams fueled by the people with whom we shared To leave equipped with a catalogue of memories and friends . . . four years is another. To cherish the past but anticipate the future, to look back yet move forward, is most important. Only this way can we appreciate fully and rightly our Connecticut College heritage. Edward Cranz Always striving to strengthen the bond between education and society, Pro- fessor F. Edward Cranz encourages his students to learn more than just the answers: he instills within them new ques- tions. To walk into his classroom is to enter upon another point in time, in history, and to expand one's mind until one can think as men have in the past. There is no such thing as passive educa- tion for Mr. Cranz. All aspects of one's mind are actively examined and applied to an area much more important than ex- ams or grades: to society. Since 1942 when Mr. Cranz began teaching at Con- necticut College, he has led students along a path of learning that goes beyond their four years of college, to question and examine life no matter where they live, no matter what occupation they have, no matter how old they may be. To Mr. Cranz, for all his guidance and dedication, we thankfully and lovingly dedicate Koin 1985. Becky Dynes for the class of 1985 John Abrons Jane Ach Zoology Alexander Stuart Amill . The wrong way is to over-emphasize athletics, the right way is to underplay it; to assume a pro- per balance between athletics and studies is the ultimate goal.' Luce adds: I the program is run the right way, it definitely makes a contribution. It could be for the student who cheers for his roommate, or for the freshman walk-on who becomes the leading scorer. Athletics gives students an understanding of the teamwork necessary in corporate situations. And that is what Conn College is here for; to better educate young men and women. WOMEN'S TENNIS A Transitional Year A young team six freshmen, six sophomores, and one senior placed the women Camels with a 5 win 6 loss record. ''Almost everyone had something that they were working on, either mentally or technically. Hilary Harrison '88 finished with the top per- sonal record for the Camels, going 8-2 in dual competition, and 3-2 in tourna- ment play for an overall 11-4 mark. Mari Smultea, the only senior on the team, came in with 13 wins and 14 losses. First row: Captains Amy Michelman and Mari Ann Smultea. Second row: Elizabeth McCullough, Hilary Harrison, Courtney Tews, Becky Kowal. Third row: Coach Sheryl Yeary, Christine Turner, Jenny Stewart, Casey Sims, Nancy Ryan, Lauren Meltzer. 151 MEN'S SOCCER A Young Team The men's soccer team ended its season with a 4-9-1 record. With no seniors on the team, they found themselves in a transitional year. The team's biggest dif- ficulty was the lack of a strong striker; no one on the team was a pure scoref. However, Coach Bill Lessig was very positive about the season and the team's future. This year we reached a great number of team and personal goals. Our young players are developing and we should see a changed, stronger team next year. The players to look for next year are Greg Ewing '87, Mike Rosenberg '86 and Dan Selcow '86. First row: Kevin Wolfe, David Fennimore, Tom Liptack, Brian Jones, Co-Captain Gary Andrews, Bill Hoffman, Nick Reeves, Tim Killenberg. Second row: Dan Selcow, Greg Ewing, Chris Young, Sean Fagan, Mike Rosenberg, John Bogaty, Derek Shoffner, David Gross. Missing: Co-Captain Jim Crowley, Koki Flagg, Bill Willard, Head Coach Bill Lessig, Asst. Coach Ken Kiine, Asst. Coach Jim Santaniello, Goalie Coach Pete Carli. 152 .g' Junior Varsity. Back row: Coach Lessig. 153 WOMEN'S SOCCER A Positive Season The ladies' second varsity schedule finished with a 2-6-4 record. Although the record was not a winning one, the team's positive attitude led them to be highly competitive in every game. The Camels were led by 5 seniors: goalkeeper Leslie Freund, NE All-Star forward Veronica Halpine 3 goals, 3 assists, Conn's all-time leading scorer Sharon Ephraim 7 goals, 4 assists, Anne Kiely and Kathy Boyd. The Camel's younger squad included 10 freshmen and 8 sophomores, led by defenders Claudia Page and Christa Burgess. First row: Seniors Sharon Ephraim, Kathy Boyd, Ann Kiely, Bumpa Halpine, Leslie Freund. Second row: Alicia Ching, Christa Burgess, Claudia Page, Christine Reker, Sarah Getzoff, Jody Kelber, Kathryn Humphrey, Patsy Heasly. Third row: Kim Emilia, Nicola Weicker, Kris Matthews, Liz Moran. Fourth row: Asst. Coach Tim Wolters, Sara Metzger, Liz Irwin, Sara Kaufman, Renee Kempler, Deb Link, Sarah Smith, Jen Marshall, Coach Fran Shields. 154. 2 FIELD HOCKEY Best Season Ever This was a year of firsts for the women's field hockey team: a regular season winn- ing record and a ranking in both the New England Division Il Poll and the NCAA Division lIl Poll. Unfortunately, the women were not able to stay on top as the season progressed. Their last few games were played without Jody Bates '85 or Lisa Menegan '87, two key defense players who were out with injuries. They did, however, finish on a high note with excellent games against Mt. Holyoke and Division Fairfield University and ended the season with a 6-3-1 record. Four of the players Amy Buckingham '85, Sue Landau '88, Page Preston '85, Caroline Twomey '86 participated on an all-star New England College Team and three of the players Landau, Preston, Twomey competed in the National Tournament in Long Beach, California. First row: Seniors Amy Buckingham, Jody Bates, Page Preston, Mary Ellen Martone. Second row: Holly Reiman, Sue Evans, Claudia Brewster, Lisa Menegon, Sue Landau, Michele Laine. Third row: Tracey Thomas, Karen Ercolino, Regina Duffy, Susan Redshaw, 157 158 VOLLEYBALL Striking Back: Tournament Champs Conn's Volleyball team rebounded from a slow start to finish the season with a 15-10-4 record. Highlights of the 1984 season included victories over Division I Columbia University at the Smith Invitational Tourna- ment, and a hard fought win versus NESCAC foe Williams College. The team captured the first Conn. College Volleyball Invitational, a five school round- robin tournament. The lady Camels placed third at - the NIAC Tournament. Coach Campbell cited Eva Miller '87 and Maura Doran '88as key components in Conn's attack. Captain Jane Ach was also a con- sistently strong player. First row: Seniors Libby Marston, and Captain, Jane Ach. Second row: Mary Reading, Donna Dobryn, Anne Horton, Eva Miller. Third row: Maura Doran, Stephanie Rinehart, Susi Stefanowicz, Toki Strong, Pam DeGaetano, Becka Smillie, Coach Amy Campbell. 159 CROSS COUNTRY A Winning Season For the women, it was their best season. Ripley Greppin '87 had a tremen- dous 2nd half of the season, including winning the Tarzan Brown Road Race in Mystic. She also placed 26th in NE Div. Il Championships, a 47 place improvement over last year. Gail Hopp '86 placed 19th in the NESCAC Champs, the highest ever by a CC woman. In the NE Div. lll meet, they won for the first time over Bowdoin and Ambherst, placing 16th out of 30 teams. Their final record was 9-10. This young team can look forward to all of its members returning next year. The men finished with a winning record of 13-1-5. Geoff Perkins '88 was the top runner in every race this fall, only tying with John Barnett '88 twice and with Chris Denn '86 once. The rest of the team progressed throughout the season and managed to beat Trinity at the NE Div. lll Championship. The experience should really show next fall, as only Paul Stueck will be graduating. First row: Mark Connolly, Lesley DeNardis, Laura Nirtaut, Maggie Edblom, Gail Hopp, Chris Bucco, Betsy Cottrell, Ripley Greppin, Ned Bishop. Second row: Andy Buscher, Rusty Logan, Geoff Perkins, John Barnett, Paul Stueck, Randy Byers, Tim Dodge, John Eustis, Chris Denn, Tom Bialek. Their 3 losses were to Trinity, who they beat last year during the regular season, and Wesleyan. Tri-captains, John Bartolomei '85, Brennan Glasgow '85, and Jeff Wiener '85, have all been strong leaders. John Bartolomei became the 5th male player in the college's history to score 1000 points and Jeff Wiener should becomethe 6th player to accomplish this feat. Wiener has been the leading scorer in 9 games and the leading rebounder in 7 games. Glasgow has played consistently throughout his Conn. career. Conn. will lose 4 of their 12 men to graduation. First row: Seniors Paul Rogers, Brennan Glasgow, John Bartolemei, Jeff Wiener. Second row: Frank Truitt, Mike Berrett, Kevin McGann, Charlie McCaghey, David Schner. Third row: Head Coach Martin Schoepfer, Sasha Lazor, Dave Benjack, Chris Philippi, Scott Sawyer, Assistant Coach David Brailey. Second row: Head Coach Martin Schoepfer, Marty Joyce, Tim Derham, Burke LaClair, Jim Borah, Assistant Coach David Brailey. 163 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NIAC Champions The Women's Basketball Team captured the NIAC Championship after a 18-3 season. Captain Laura Brunner '86 led the Camels to their best season with her strong inside scoring and rebounding. Brunner was the first woman to break the 1000 paint mark. Overall, the women played well defen- sively, but never achieved the offensive balance they needed. Brunner and Jill Zawacki have been named to the All New England All-Star Team by the Division lI New England Women's Basketball coaches Association NEWBA . First row: Tracey Finer, Laura Brunner Captain, Suzanne Muri. Second row: Liz Irwin, Beth McKiernan, Jill Zawacki, Melissa Upton. Third row: Coach Bill Lessig, Lynne Quintal, Christine Turner, Liz Palmer. 164 165 166 GYMNASTICS New England Champions The Women's Gymnastics Team captured the New England's by edging rival Salem State 157.4 to 154.65 to win their first regional championship in the team's 14-year history and earned their highest finish ever: third in the ECAC's. The 1985 season has included 25 record breaking performances. An impressive crop of freshmen has made its mark on the college record book, while the upperclassmen have given depth to the team with their consistent points. First row: Vicky Johnson, Maria Leet, Caroline Samsen, Sue Fender, Denise Llewellyn, Eliza Ardiff. Second row: Fritze Frey, Laurie FeFe, Dana Simpson, Kim Ellsasser, Pam Brinard, Lynn Depippo, Priscilla Fulford, Coach Jeff Zimmerman. 167 168 ICE HOCKEY Looking to next year Coach Doug Roberts continued to build the men's ice hockey team in the 1984-1985 season. The team worked well together in achieving their optimal potential. Although seniors Craig Bower, Joe Lawler and Mark Munro, will be missed next year, Roberts looks forward to having 10 seniors next year reach a high level of maturity in their playing. Roberts notes that co-captains Dan Collins '86 and Garr Talanian '86, as exceptional leaders and Greg Donovan '86, as 4 superior player. However, Roberts gives the: highest compliment to Sean Fagan '87, by stating that he is the type of competitor he is looking for on his team. First row: Gaar Talanian, Mark Monroe, Coach Doug Roberts, Steve Barriere, John Simpson, Asst. Coach Fran Shields, Joe Lawler, Craig Bower, Dan Collins. Their theme 'girls just wanta have fun' was backed by hard work that turned into strong results. A mid-season record of 6-2, included wins over W.P.I., Fairfield State, Bates, and Salem State. The team hopes to send a few women to the New England Championships this year and perhaps a woman to nationals in a year or two. After coming in third overall 85 pts. at the New England Dinghy Championships, Conn went on to represent New England at the National Small Boat Championships at Old Dominion. Outstanding talent has been displayed by Captain Todd Berman '85 as he qualified for the 470 World Championship which takes place in Vitale, Italy. The lightweight four won the New Englands defeating arch rivals Wesleyan and Colby. The varsity heavyweight four beat Amherst, Wesleyan, and Holy Cross during the regular season and crossed the line in second place at the New Englands. The varsity lightweight eight won close races against Williams, Tufts, and Trinity, and placed fourth at the New Englands. The team achieved their season goal by placing all four boats in the finals of the National Dad Vail Regatta.
