. m;dl 14. e 3 Connecticut Coliege, New 'Lond-on, Connecticut VS 4 Opening What is the value of our liberal arts education in today's world? We at Connecticut College believe that such a process is worthwhile and still has a unique place in society today. These pages attempt to illustrate how the personal and intellectual growth we have achieved here is reflected in all that we do. 17 - Seniors Some faces you can never forget. Others you can never quite remember. One way or another, this section holds us all together as a class while each photograph speaks for itself, of itself. 119 Sports Athletics as well as academics at Connecticut College have always been alive and available. In- creased interest in sports has brought recognition to the school and a more diverse student body - one that is committed to ex- cellence on the playing field as well as in the classroom. 143 Dormitories Dormitories are a focal point around which the campus revolves. They are the environ- ment out of which we function, and are as various and vital as all the different faces that fill them each year. i 167 Organizations Clubs and organizations represent, another aspect of the liberal arts curriculum. Groups of people are, brought together by common ambitions, whether they are scholastic, athletic, cultural or simply social. This year has seen increased participation campus-! wide, as students exercise the many resources the college offers.: NTS 183 - Student Life The term says it all: student life. Here at Connecticut College many different life styles coexist. A walk in the Arboretum, lunch with a professor, tailgating at a soccer game, dance concerts, art exhibits, movies, plays, trips to Norm's or Ocean's, laying out a yearbook - all teach life's lessons, and a few are preserved here. The liberal arts education depends on a constant and dedicated faculty and staff in all its departments. Their support, friendship, and guidance are essential to all our progress. The quality of their contributions is mirrored in the quality of academics overall. 215 - Closing As another yearbook closes, we wish to salute once again our liberal arts education and thank all the people that make it possible. Our dosing includes a few final thoughts on this microcosm in which we have lived the past four years. We will continue to sup- port this institution so that others may also enjoy the offerings of a liberal arts education. The real value of a liberal arts education lies in the capacity to make fine distinctions. These words heard by an impressionable young sophomore in Miss Mulvey's English History class, represent the philosophy of this fine professor concern- ing the education of her students. Never content with second best, Helen Mulvey inspires her students to go beyond mediocrity, and to strive for academic ex- cellence. For the past thirty-six years, Miss Mulvey has been an important member of the Connecticut College community and has given her students a clearer understanding of their world, of its history, and of themselves. Miss Mulvey's record of service and dedication is an ex- ample of the heights which a college pro- fessor can attain. It is with pride, admira- tion, respect, and a deep sense of gratitude that we dedicate Koin 1983 to Professor Helen F. Mulvey. - The possible avenues of education have multiplied with growing specialization and higher standards of living in this country. The history of liberal arts within this expanding system is unfor- tunately closely linked to a fluctuating economy, and it has both profited and suffered in this relationship. Now that the feasibility of the liberal arts education is being threatened, we, who have chosen this course, contribute what follows as record of our experience. NESCAC: Keeping Academics in Mind Sports at Connecticut College - another enriching aspect of our education. This year was Conn's first year as a member of NESCAC: the New England Small Col- lege Athletic Conference. Our affiliation with NESCAC brings the Camels into a new arena of strong competition with other similar institutions which are also dedicated to giving their students top rate academics and athletic experience. Connecticut College's student-athletes reflect a high level of athletic prowess and maturity which is, in essence the core of the Conn. athletic program. R e ?m Entering Well-Equipped s e Student life not only animates all corners of the campus, but extends to marshes, to youth centres, to hospitals, to civil ser- vices in the area, to performances for the public and ultimately creates the generation that next moves out into Ell parts of the world. The community and the space of four years provided by undergraduate school allows us to ex- plore and develop ourselves and our abilities in order to enter that world well equipped. ty Iversli The Opportunity for D 12 o 14 Exploration of the Mind The life of the student focuses on his or her sampling of the fields available for study. This sampling alone could carry many of us far beyond the four year col- lege life. Exploration of this kind, and the training of the mind that results are the unique attractions of the liberal arts education. 15 16 Definition by Demonstration Liberal Arts: Academic disciplines, such as languages, history, philosophy, and abstract science, presumed to develop general intellectual ability and judgement and provide information of general cultural concern. The above is a dic- tionary definition of Liberal Arts. At Con- necticut College this definition underlies everything we do. Whether it is student activities, parties, sports, or academics, the definition is still the skeleton of our lives here. We take responsibility for what we create from that outline, the ways in which we personally animate our own educations. Seniors The class of 1983, like the previous sixty-four classes, is comprised of students who both individually and col- lectively have made their mark on all aspects of campus life. Their individuality is expressed in this section, where each photo is a personal statement. This is their year in the limelight culminating May 29th at Commencement. We applaud the seniors and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. : rl 17 18 A Tribute to Marg. Margaret Watson, our Dean of Stu- dent Affairs, known affectionately as Marg , affects every student at the col- lege in a direct or indirect way during each of their four years. She tames the monsterously complex housing lottery and eases roommate problems throughout both semesters. She is the energetic force behind the Housefellow program, informing them and helping to untangle the little problems that upset the harmony of dorm life. And teaming up with Karl Beeler and S.G.A., Marg sees to it that the social life on the campus is a healthy and enjoyable one. Through her dedication and a bit of magic, Marg suc- cessfully accomplishes what would or- dinarily keep a small staff busy on a full time basis. We appreciate the exceptional job she does, but this is only a part of why Marg is such a popular member of the campus community. It is her friendliness, concern, and her dedication to Connecticut Col- lege which has won the hearts of so many students over the years. Because of her warm personality, love, friendship and support, the Class of 1983 dedicates its Senior Section to Marg Wat- son, and thanks her for her role in making four years of college such a great experience. These ac- tivities enable the men and women of the college to improve themselves physically, while they get some relaxation L ',rf mentally. Athletic programs also build a sense of pride in one's self and a pride in the emerging athletic tradition at the col- lege. They are the heartbeat that keeps everything alive and vital, the physical manifestation of the college's ideal to continually improve. 119 A Team on the Rise o Q I A ff'l - W, -J: ' - g Et-.';' , . f - .F?..,.-- R . - ' - i b e 1 i ! 37 a !. - !'-!Hn'. n 4 - b e - . - e z - - i j N5 . 2 ' D - . . - L 2 s Y N 3 - 9 x - , q r 4 e - A - o G r s ; . 0 - 5, J h 4 i '- Y I 2 Wi J o 1 ED et anifs H . The team finished with a record of five wins, six losses, and one tie. Wins over Wesleyan University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Nichols College were among the season's highlights. Strong showings versus peren- nial powers Trinity College and Smith College proved that the Camels are a team on the rise. Freshman Caroline Twomey led the Camel attack with nine goals. Sophomore standout Page Preston added seven more. The steady, heads up play of junior Tammy Brown was the backbone of the Conn. defense. Co- captain Collette Beaulieu will be the only player lost to graduation, leaving the outlook for 1983 an optimistic one. 122 Camel Booters Begin Rebuilding Front Row, left to right: David Fenimore, Angelo Ziotas, Bob Gib Reinier De-Jong-Van-Coevorden. With a full compliment of freshman recruits, the varsity soccer team began its 1982-83 campaign with high hopes for a season which was to be anything but predictable. The Camels gave Division I powerhouse URI a scare in their season opener, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime before bowing 4-2. Full of confidence, the varsity easily disposed of arch-rival Coast Guard and Manhattanville by 3-1 scores. Next on the agenda was nationally-ranked New Haven, and Con- necticut fortunes took to a 1-1 tie with lit- tle time remaining, but let it slip away in the closing minutes 3-1. The aftermath of the UNH match was devastating. Unable to find the back of the net, the Camels were defeated in four straight matches before drawing two 0-0 matches. The Camels regained their winning ways by thrashing Trinity 2-0 and Nichols 4-1, in two of their final five ap- pearances of the season. Varsity soccer closed out its schedule with a 4-9-2 mark, in what was not an altogether disappointing season. Despite losing co-captains Jim Santaniello leading scorer and Bert Czuchra, and strikers Bob Gibb second-leading scorer and Steve O'Leary to graduation, the majority of the team are freshmen who have three more seasons to put Connecticut back into the top ten in New England Division il soccer. fm?'. Second Despite the 1982-83 Women Volleyball Team's 13-14 overall record, the team made considerable im- provements over last year's finish. This year's squad, led by seniors Michele Blan- chard and Megan Vosburgh, played ex- tremely well in dual matches during the season. Kay Offenhartz '84, Cindy Stein '84, Susan Westmoreland '85, Leila Cleaves '85, and Katie Carlin '85 were the backbone for the Camel starters. Rookie frosh Chris Priest, Laura Brunner, and Paula Reddy gained valuable ex- perience and maturity which will assert itself in the season to come. Coach Marilyn Gelish will most certainly have a power-packed squad for the future. 125 Best Season Ever 3' Front Row: Katie Danes, Cathy Leeming, Gayle Brady, Leslie Leemin Johnson, Joanne Knowlton, Cici Kossmann, Chris Sieminski, Elizabeth Hg' Mary-Ann Somers, Mary Smultea, Judy Kameon. Led by senior co- captains Blair Nichols and Laurie Reynolds, along with seniors Taryl Johnson and Gayle Brady, Wesleyan and Bridgeport were defeated 7-2 and 4-3 respectively. Juniors Joanne Knowilton, Cici Kossman, Mary Smultea, Cathy and Leslie Leeming were among the top players for the Camels, each gaining points for each team victory. The outlook for next year? It can only be brighter as this team gains more experience and expertise. 127 Aiming for the Top 128 The Women's Crew team, full of ex- perienced and dedicated seniors, began their fall season with the National Invita- iional Women's Regatta in which several camel crews made it to the finals. The Head-of-the-Charles Regatta found Con- necticut with seven women's boats entered, several of which also finished strongly. The women Camels trained diigently throughout the winter in preparation for the spring season's demanding schedule. The team should end up strongly, hopefully placing boats in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. The Men's Crew surpassed all expecta- tions with a very strong showing in the fall Head regattas. At the Head-of-the- Connecticut, the Varsity Heavyweight Eight placed 6th, while the Varsity Lightweight Eight finished a firm 11th. At the Head-of-the-Charles, the Heavyweight boat landed 19th out of forty, two slots ahead of arch-rival Coast Guard. With the freshmen boats also finishing strongly, Coach Tom Boyer can be sure his Camel oarsmen will be ready for their unsuspecting Dad Vail competitors. Senior Dave Litoff capped a brilliant four-year career, earning All-American honors by finishing 14th in the NCAA Division lll National Championships in Fredonia, New York. Ned Bishop '84 and Peter Foley '83 both finished the season strongly, helping the team finish a solid 21st at the New England Division Il Regionals. Geoff Farrell 83, Ken Cadigan '83, Rob Ingram '83, and Len Ellentuck '86 all contributed to this strong season finale. The 1982-83 Women's Cross Country Camels finished their rebuilding season with a record of 1-6-1, both their win and tie against Quinnipiac College. The young team's pack leaders were Ellen Donlon '85 and Stephanie Taylor '85, with strong showings by Laura Nirtaut '86, Amy Wagner '86, Fran Blume '86, and Heidi Geiges '86. With these many young runners gaining experience and in- creasing their potential over the past season, the future for these Camel har- riers looks bright. 131 Hoopsters Remain Strong l. ! Second Row: Assistant Coach Ron Jirsa, Jof 80, John Jowaiszas, Coach Martin Schoepfer. 132 The 1982-83 Camel hoopsters, riding off of a strong 1982 showing, finished their season with a fine 12-10 record. The season kicked into high gear as the Camels defeated Amherst and Coast Guard to win the Whaling City Invita- tional Tournament before an overflowing home crowd. Wins against Wesleyan and Gordon College fortified the team's record. Juniors Peter Dorfman and Tom Fleming provided the scoring firepower for the Camels while John Bartolomei '85, Doug Kirk '84, Jim Santaniello '83, and Rich Wolfe '84 were also standout performers for first year coach Martin Schoepfer's squad. Only one senior will be lost to graduation, so these young hoopsters will be stronger and faster for the years to come. 133 134 The 1982-83 Women's Basketball team, under the leadership of first year coach Bill Lessig, compiled a misleading 7-13 season record. Lacking the height that many of their opponents had, these Camels fought hard in many of their games, only to lose by a small margin. On the scorecard, Laura Brunner '86 was the top point-getter for the team. Becky Carver '84 and Margie Bennett '85 were the Camel's fighters, excelling on defense and team offense. M. . Kanabis '84 was the main playmaker on the team, with Sarra Newhall '83 providing the backcourt depth. With new frosh next year, the Camel hoopsters can be expected to produce an excellent squad for Coach Lessig. 135 Ice Camels Win With Youth Front: sitting, Paul Marks. O'Sullivan, Manager Bill Veronese, Manager Elise Ericsson, Gaar Talanian, Manager Ted Root 136 The 1982-83 Camel hockey season can be adequately summed up by the Wesleyan-Connecticut game of February. With Dayton Arena packed tight with ecstatic fans, the Camels held onto a 5-4 lead for the first time ever to beat arch-rival Wesleyan. It was in this type of atmosphere that the Camels tallied an 14-9 mark for the season. Led by seniors Nigel Bentley, Connec- ticut's all-time leading scorer, and captain Paul Brock, the Camel's entry into the new NESCAC league was an intimidating one, as they racked up wins and gave other Division I and Il squads legitimate scares. Other vital cogs which will figure heavily in next year's season are Craig Bower '84, Chip Orcutt 84, and the 10 returning freshmen, many of whom were starters and also provided the squad with depth. Coach Doug Roberts should be very optimistic about the future, and about the position of the team as a new contender in New England Division Ili hockey. 137 Camels Vault to Winning Record P e W Y i o el i isCi i heeler, Laura Patz, Ro irst Row, left to right: Priscilla Fulford, Beth Bria, Amy W : ; Eg;cht;:;f Zimmerrfmann, Kate Fiene, Randi Hammond, Cathy Altman, Judy Burge yse Shanley, Krista Roseland. Even hampered with in- juries, the squad went on to defeat such formidable opponents as Coast Guard, Brown, M.IT, and Waestfield State. Senior co-captains Royse Shanley and Laura Patz were outstanding performers on the uneven bars, the beam, and vaulting. Pat Moe '84 lead the squad in all-around scoring and in each of the in- dividual events. Amy Wheeler '83, Priscilla Fulford '85, and Katie Fiene '86 also performed brilliantly throughout the season. Coach Jeff Zimmermann's entire team deserves praise for their ac- complishments despite the obstacles they encountered. 139 Record Setting Season First Row: left to right, Coach Cliff Larrabee, Ann-Marie Parsons, Nancy Maxwell, Laur Moll, Lee Statchen, Sara Savin, Linn Speers, Jenny Davis. The Connecticut College Women's Swim Team, a tightly knit group of eigh- teen individuals, swam to a strong 7-5 mark for the 1982-83 season. Led by Coach Cliff Larrabee and spirited senior co-captains Nancy Maxwell and Sue Coakley, the team broke numerous school records over the season. Seniors Linn Speers and Jenni Davis finished their careers with standing records in the 100 yd. Individual Medley and the 100 yd. Freestyle, respectively. Frosh Sarah Pitt was the first swimmer in Connecticut's history to qualify for the Division Il Na- tional Swimming and Diving Competi- tion. Overall, this young squad will be faster in the years to come, and will also surely miss this year's talented seniors. J 141 Intramurals: Total Involvement Connecticut College's strong in- tramural program exists as a release from the tension of academics. Every dor- mitory is represented by a team in various sports which include flag football, hockey, volleyball, and many others. On any given afternoon, one can find the Chapel Field filled with screaming fans; or in the evening in Crozier-Williams with dorm volleyball in full swing. For those who do not participate in varsity sports, and even for those who do, intramurals provide a sense of team competition and dorm camaraderie. 142 Dormi There are twenty-one houses on cam- pus, varying considerably in both size and character. Abbey, Unity, and Knowlton offer three alternative living experiences to students on campus. The feeling of an extended family is bolstered by parties, N l Lol I tories A Il intramural sports, dorm dining rooms, and day to day living. The subtleties of social relationships, cooperation, and loyalty are all brought out in the dor- mitory, and will provide lasting memories and friendships for years to come. t 1 13 s 143 Front Row, left to right: Joanne Segal, Karyn Barsa, Robert Gibb, Bert Czuchra, Cynthia Susla, Maarten Terry. The job re- quires a sharp eye, a sympathetic ear, a frm hand, and patience. Laughter, a touch of insanity perhaps, and the ability to overcome embarrassing situations are also qualities that give the dormitory a healthy, supportive atmosphere. Un- doubtedly, problems occur, but swift, decisive action and a cool head under pressure earn a Housefellow the respect of fellow dorm members. Things aren't always easy for these campus leaders, but when the chemistry is there, beautiful moments of togetherness and fun become etched in the mind forever. 145 146 F!'rsl Row: left to right, Andrew Harkins, Beth Zalinger, Elise Aronov, Maria Liz Branca. Thanks to their untiring effort and determination this years book is not simply a book of meaningless photographs, but a description of the year's events in words and pictures praising our liberal arts education. Student Life The nebulous title 'Student Life en- compasses all of the learning that takes place outside the classroom. The fine art of socializing, going to a party, ex- ploring New London, or spectating at a sporting event are just a few of the many aspects of life at Connecticut. Beginning with orientation, freshman year, our student life here is enriched by a variety of experiences that pro- mote maturity, confidence, and self-esteem. 183 Musically, the year brought a well- polished variety of talent to the campus. Music lovers were treated to everything from the classical sounds of the Con- certArtist Series to the acoustic guitar of David Bromberg to the rocking tunes of David Johansen. Some new additions to the campus music scene included the Alexander String Quartet, Connecticut's own resident artists, and several student bands. And of course, traditionally, there were the many performances by the Col- lege Chorus, the Orchestra, the Conn Chords, the CoCo Beaux, and the Shwiffs. 186 Creatures for a Ni t On October 29th, the campus gathered for the annual Halloween party. Tradi- tionally this event allows Conn students to display their creativity and this year was certainly no exception. All night long a collection of assorted ghouls, creatures, and bizarre objects rocked to the high powered band Steve Smith and the Nakeds. Best costume prizes were awarded to ET, the Plex, and one long tall Texan. More than one person was heard to remark Who was that masked man anyway? 188 189 Two traditional highlights of the fall semester are Homecoming and Oktoberfest. This year the two events were combined for the first time to create a weekend of meetings, reunions, and celebrations. Appropriately, this year's Homecoming banner theme was German coats of arms. Though disap- pointed with the Soccer team's loss to Wesleyan in the feature Homecoming game, alumni and students alike found tailgating by the soccer pitch an en- joyable experience. Following the game the festivities continued with Oktoberfest held amidst the older Quad. dormitories and decorated with the banners of all. A Bavarian band, light and dark imported ales, and special foods, created a genuine aura of German celebration as old friend- ships were renewed and new ones were made. The day ended with an elegant evening of wine tasting as many alumni got therr first glimpse of ConnCave. For everyone involved the 1982 Homecom- ingOktoberfest will always hold fond memories. 191 When it's Time to Relax When it's late in the evening and time to unwind, the most convenient place to grab a couple of beers before bedtime is the Cro Bar. Under the supervision of At- tilio Regolo, with students working as waiters, waitresses and bouncers, the bar becomes a cozy spot to socialize and relax from Tuesday through Saturday. And this year, it also became a place to listen to the music of talented campus musicians on Wednesday nights. Thanks to the Cro Bar, all of the problems that students face are just a little easier to take. 193 Holiday Tradition 194 As winter settles over the campus and finals loom large on the horizon, the tradition of Secret Santa provides a pleasant tension-easing diversion. Each Santa Baby enjoys a week filled with sur- prises like bubble baths, food and drink, back rubs, and room decorating. The dorm Christmas Party caps off the fun with a visit from the real Santa Claus and the opening of the special final presents. The spirit of happiness and giving creates enough momentum to get everyone through finals and on to a well-deserved Winter Break. 195 o Py O e C o - Q d o S Z Q c ,...... e o Z Several years ago, while speaking at the dedication ceremony for the library, Kurt Vonnegut dubbed the as yet un- named structure The Noodle Factory. While the library is a haven for the studious, it is far from being a factory. The library here at Connecticut instead reflects the personal nature of the cam- pus with institutions like the helpful and often humorous library suggestion book. This personal touch is what sets Connec- ticut apart from larger, less communal schools. Student Life at Connecticut College is not limited by what is represented here, but expands outward. Every part of stu- dent life adds to the process of learning that we must go through. The broad spectrum of activities encompassed by this liberal arts education contributes to the making of a complete individual. It is this well-prepared person that Connec- ticut sends forth to face the real world and its challenges. Faculty The faculty of the college is characterized by accessibility, involve- ment, and a genuine love for teaching and guiding students towards their aspirations. Their personalities are unique, their classrooms are relaxed, and their subjects challenge even the most in- quisitive minds. They stand by liberal arts as a system that works, making students well-rounded individuals who are able to confront just about anything the world has to offer. 199 Administration Oakes Ames President 1 Leroy Knight College Treasurer Jane Bredeson Assistant to I the President W Alice Johnson Dean of the College 200 Philip Ray Associate Dean Margaret Watson Dean of Student Affairs R.
