The 1981 Koine is dedicated to the George S. Palmer Library and the Connecticut College spirit which is embodied in her proud history and exciting future. The story of Palmer Library begins at the first Connecticut College com- mencement where philanthropist George S. Palmer announced his gift of $100,000 for a library or a chapel. Since its opening in 1923, Palmer Library has served as the campus' elegant centerpiece, rising magnificently at the top of the college green. The completion of the new library in 1976 led to Palmer Library's retirement, and since then it has sat awaiting its exciting new career. Its doors are opened rare- ly; annually for the Connecticut College book sale, and once in 1978 to host an all campus social event which not one of us has forgotten. Plans have been presented to convert Palmer Library into a new humanities center, complete with new classrooms, lecture halls, seminar rooms, and faculty offices. As soon-to-be graduates, the class of 1982 shares the excitement of embarking upon new directions at the same time as our college. We are proud recipients of degrees from an institu- tion of high academic caliber which is the Con- necticut College tradition, a tradition represented by Palmer Library. Furthermore, we have used these four years as a time to develop our abilities to think and question, a waiting period proceeding our new careers an investment in our future. We applaud the spirit ot past, present, and future which is the Connecticut College ex- perience, and hope the 1982 Koine has cap- tured its essence as well. Paul Weiss 1982 Class President
