What separates the good from the superior then? Is it pure knowledge? Perhaps it is the ability to articulate a difficult concept? Rather, we posit that it is one who is equally capable of infusing his students with the fire he feels for his subject without compromising his own professional integrity, communicating to them the necessity of integrating the personal with the critical. We believe that these expressions for meaningful exchange and encouragement of learning have been successfully promulgated by the careers of Eveline Omwake and James Baird at Connecti- cut College. My reply is that, although the areas of concern have changed, today's students still care intensely about society's problems. You have also recognized that to participate effectively in their solution you need all that the College can give you in the way of tools to do the job. I hope that, in addition to those tools, your work at Connecticut College has given you a heightened awareness of what needs to be done and the encouragement to play active roles at whatever level you can. The problems are big; they are not impossible as long as educated men and women are willing to become involved. Our best wishes go with you all.
