Charles E. Shain His administration has been one of change. In 1962 he arrived from Carleton, Minnesota, a former English professor, to accept the challenge of the Presidency of Connecticut College for Women. During the past twelve years the College has en- dured drastic change under his able guidance. In 1969 he greeted the first coeducational class in fifty-eight years of College history, a change which he openly supported as God's plan . Sensitive to the temper of the times and a firm believer in ac- tion, he guided the campus during the Strike of 1969, not as a passive onlooker, but as a leader. His administration has been one of commitment to the idea of growth. His concem for the personal and civic maturation of the individual is coupled with his striving for the preservation of academic excellence. His administration has been one of faith in the community of Connecticut College. His enthusiasm is silent yet sensed. His casual manner makes him easily approachable whether it be in Fanning or on the paddle tennis court. He listens attentively to the needs and goals of the student. He has encouraged us, the student body, to assume responsibility for our own decisions, allowing us to experience both success and failure. He has witnessed the Connecticut College of the past and molded the Connecticut College of the fu- ture. We thank him for his wit, spirit, courage, sin- cerity, faith and trust, and it is with pride and best wishes that we dedicate Koin 1974 to Charles E. Shain. .. - Photographs by Geraldine Elzin.
