We dedicate Koine 1971 to the many facets and potentialities of the individual. The individual is able to express himself through many identi- ties. For us, the student on campus, the range of these identities is extensive and we enjoy the time and freedom necessary for their development. We may choose to define ourselves as aca- demic, social, introspective, or, particularly today, political en- tities. It is during this period that we come to know ourselves and to set the framework for a life in the future community. We are, in one sense, like the archery target, a core about which radiate our modes of existence. Because each ring ap- pears to emanate from the smallest, and because the circular nature of the rings leaves no distinction between the beginning and the end, the target is a whole and infinite symbol. We, too, are whole and infinite beings. Though we move through the world with various functions we cannot separate the source of our being from its manifestations. In poetic terms the yellow of the central circle symbolizes the corona of the sun, a source of light and life. So are we the source from which our worlds flour- ish, and we are ever profound. We are, in a second sense, like the archer who aims the arrows and whose attention is constantly directed towards the bull's eye. His practice, be it less than successful, enhances his knowl- edge of reaching the goal to which his actions have been com- mitted. So we too are striving to reach the core of our being through our various modes of existence. Our commitment to humanity emerges from our commitment to ourselves. This is our time. This is our practice. 285843
