Dedication 3 p MR. HAMILTON MARTIN SMYSER Chairman of the English Department Mr. Smyser is simultaneously aware of both the color and beauty of literature and of its potential for con- fusing the student who approaches it for the first time. He dissipates her confusion with vivid and witty anecdotes. The student emerges with o firm and sensitive grasp of the material. The source of her sure-footedness is an energetic and observant person who would never permit her to read to get the general idea. Rather she is charmed info a search for the precise detail that gives life and depth. The process is delightful. She is grateful. Patricia B. Dale He gave man speech, and speech created thought. The moment of truth. 168 The Saga of the Class of 1966 or The Odd-Yssey Through A New England Oz a sestina A storm of duty or desire set our houses down On the bottom of a hill by a New England town Where a velvet striped procession showed us to the road And walked with us in the direction of our minds And into the time of the needs of our hearts We followed the way with uncertain courage. A new wizard sent communications of his wit to give us courage From overhead his crinkled smile and golden tassel falling down Gave to our way a certain style, thus we took heart And stopped in the first year of our journey to the town To release a man of straw who sought a mind We joined him to us and continued on the road. We formed groups then followed separate roads. But convened with the courage To abolish regulated chapels for our minds To hear The Feminine Mystaque gloriously down To vote unlimited absences to lead us to new towns And then we found a tinman, stiffened in his search for heart. We freed from jail one who sought the rights of equal hearts All was not quite fantasy along the road Tired and sad we could forget the town But against the three day rains we had courage While winds from furiously turned pages blew us down We moved in perpetual deference to our minds. In red we underlined eternals and abstractions of the mind While above the public facts were private beginnings of the heart And from in-between assigned routine we could pass down Good talk and important nonsense to footnote our road In our last year a lion wanting courage For the future charged us as we came upon the town. Robed heroines of selves we reached the town We brought with us the followers of mind And those who sided with the lion out of courage And those who, like the tinman, sought a heart. For four years we had danced these wishes to the road Whole some of us accelerated, some fell down. We passed down along a platform to the wizard of the town Who, in a paper token told us that the road had proved our minds And that which we had carried all along inside: namely some heart, some brains, some courage. Julie Baumgold 176 Waters Off-Shore Grey-green, Those waters Off Electric Boat, So full of life, The moon's own ebb and flow, And so too of death. Is that oil There, near those rocks, The same that went down with those men? The other ship, off Portsmouth, Lived through the infamy and the grandeur of it all. Raised and rebuilt, Yet never free of the ghosts Of those men before. Which is better, to be lost at sea, Out of our sight and too often out of our minds, Or to be brought back up, Having done what it did, And live on, never free of those men. As your life to mine, old man, is this To my cathedral, erect in its prime; Its arcaded walls stretching, Columns gracefully upholding proud height; The habitat of tall spirits whose brows are flecked With awful light, with blinking mystery Poised to move in the slow sweeping shafts of light; Its dome is a flood of misty sun, A vaulted symbol of soaring hope, Inscribed in letters of golden hubris. Julie Baumgold Marshall Prize Winner Cynthia Miller I am happy in my house Oh sure it's not yet finished, but you can tell The beams and eaves are beams and eaves. The house began with strings and pieces But now the lattices climb and curl. I've used the help I've had: Strong words, wise contractors, and heart. Carpenters have scraped at old problems. But it's me that sanded the doors. And sweeps. And switches out the lights. If the house is word-wise, who's to say? If there is a closet, I will let it be for brooms. When the house is done, then is just me. Marianna Kaufman 183 184 Poem I couldn't get close enough. My voice was air bluely blown away in the air of the room. My fingers got just thatbut not quite close enough to touch and as I watched they shrivelled grew arthritic and finally fell off. Smiles. I rubbed my face hard against the wall pushing it into masks of gladness. Every time I turned to smile My features fell off too. Finally my heart gave up dried up and rattled around inside like and old pea forgotten somewhere. When that happened I left. Sara Walbridge Edith Moore Michelle Pappas Victorian Ships, At Night Sitting in her office most of the day, Is Persis Stillson, clerk for the town. Her office is brown, and dark, and full Of all those years of organizing. What does she think of as she works, Of all those people she has organized, And readvised as to what to do With taxes and death and money and cows. Her office in Maxham Hall, built awhile back, By Mr. Maxham for the town, in yellow brick And brown doors, seen in pictures of the time Of Chester A. Arthur born in Vermont, And Mr. Maxham, mustached man, Should have been in the pictures too. A man who had a wide green lawn, For evening croquet, in front of the house, White and locking like a ship at night. A Victorian ship on a sea of leisure. Does Persis reflect on how it was, And sigh for all those good past years? Money and taxes, children and death, Must fill her mind in this short day. But Mr. Maxham, ubiquitous man, Was in her busy mind again. If he could come back alive she meant, What would he think of our town now? Never the same, that he'd know. Would he like our new drug store? Or new paved roads, or new town lights? Where would he go where he would know The things he'd see? Where could he go Except to the town society For state and local history. Katherine Curtis 185 Administration and Faculty J TRUSTEES 1965-1966 LAURENCE J. SHAIN 188 To the Members of the Class of 1966: As I write this hail and farewell greeting for your yearbook, we have just had our intercollegiate conference called ConnQuest. The subject up for discussion was the threat to your future American lives posed by the impersonal forces of an approaching mass culture, mechanized for joyless efficiency and designed for public not private ends. Perhaps the meeting's issues were over-stated. Years hence as you return to these pages you may smile at threats to your life that never materialized. But the conference was a good occasion. It reflected, 1 believe, a lively self-consciousness in a college generation not too solemn to smile at a remark by one visitor from a man's college who said, If our college years are the best years of our life, something must be wrong. Koing is not supposed to be a solemn publication. It is supposed to suggest that 1965-1966 was one of the best years of your life. For proof here are smiling photo- graphs and timeless moments of unabashed public happiness. I know you will return to it often to help keep lively and significant your college years, with all their meanings for you. oL Sl Charles E. Shain President 189 GERTRUDE E.
