EDITORIAL LONG-TERM WITH AN EYE TOWARD But I don't want to go among mad people, protested Alice. Oh you can't help that, said the Chcs-hire Cat, We're all mad here. You've heard of things like post-war expansion in a liberal arts college? Of course, said Alice. You've seen the piles of brick and steel and the frenzied workmen on the north side of cam- pus. They're furiously constructing to meet the fall deadline, so that there will be rooms and beds and things for incoming students. Absolutely necessary, murmured Alice. No Quonset huts for us. But they haven't stopped with one. There are seven new pre-fabricated buildings for faculty members, for many who have returned from overseas will want to be near their chosen pro- fession. And then the plans for a minor Mayo clinic are becoming concretized. Verily, a housing boon, said Alice, but who will inhabit these structures? The Cat's grin broadened. Oh you forget the fine scholastic standing of this educational insti- tution. In the midst of the madness of the world, we have maintained an equitable prestige in belles-lettres; enterprising scholars over two thousandare pounding the admissions office for the two hundred vacancies in the freshman class. Alice shifted her weight, and the Cat con- tinued. You see, we have the modern outlook. We have to, in order to keep up with the modern generation. We are introducing into the curricu- lum practical courses with the theoretical; there are so many young veterans who must pursue technological courses here in the summer. And with the girls who enlist from other colleges why, what a wealth of ideas; a veritable melting n pot. PICTURE OF THE WEEK: PLANNING EXPANSIVE POLICIES The practicable democracy, murmured Alice, but But we still have our eyes on Europe. Of course, when there is safe travel to Europe once more, we will want to teach those Over There how much we have profited from research in our security., We will want to send exchange students who will best represent us in the cultural rehabili- tation programs and promote a more internation- al understanding. So far, we have touched them only through relief programs. But you can see that we are wide awake. I can see that, Alice cried. But where will be the leisure for contemplation in this program? What else happens in this Neutra Utopia? Oh mores, the Cat sighed. Of course there will be recreational facilities. We will have more of the fine musical performancesthe universal concert series, more theatrical ventures into experimental dramas, literary magazines on pro- fessional bases, progressive documents in the li- brary, and he licked his chops, Ambrosia in every kitchen. But Alice wrinkled her forehead. You don't understand. How may girls further enjoy their immersion in this streamlined society? You are young, my dear. We will be attuned to the times and clocks and synchronized bells. By mechanized habits, we will learn the value of concentrated thinking, so that there will be time for relaxation. There will still be merging of minds at the student-faculty teas, evening re- pasts at club gatherings, Saturday evening movies, and formal ballroom dances . . . Mad, muttered Aljce, Mad? Of course. The Cat's grin faded. But we're out of our ivory tower, we're living, we're vital. At least we're expanding and going some- where. So you see, my Alice, his grin disap- peared, there is a method in our madness.
