R e DEDICATION APPRECIATION OF THE CLASS OF 1946 S MUCH a part of the campus legend of ivy on gray stone walls, Dr. Frank E. Morris has become on the col- lege campus a living symbol of those mentors who tire- lessly devote their efforts toward scholarly attainments of young students. But, like the well-known Mr. Chips, he has imbued not only his philosophy protegees with a finely-aged knowledge of tradition and culture, but the entire student body as well. His rare combination of erudition and keen human understanding have earned for him mingled respect and devotion. From the time of his arrival at Connecticut College in 1917, the span of deliberative Dr. Morris achievements has included periods of instruction in psychology and education as well as his present professorship in philosophy. As head of numerous com- mittees, he has acquired the enviable position of one who can compare from first-hand experience raw beginnings of campus activities relative to the more complex collegiate society of today. Because of his outstanding qualifications in furthering a keener insight and fuller understanding of life, his guidance of those whp must carry on the torch of learning, the staff of the 1946 Koine' is proud to dedicate its yearbook to Uncle Frank. w PRESIDENT KATHARINE BLUNT SITS BEHIND HER LARGE MAHOGANY DESK AS SHE PLANS HER DAY'S NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES MISS BLUNT CONSIDERS OPINIONS AT Page four INFORMAL COFFEE SPEAKING OF PICTURES: .z - v 9+ 3 PRESIDENT BLUNT CARRIES ON THE TRADITION After an absence of two years, President Kath- arine Blunt returned in the fall of 1945 to re- sume her role as the inspiring leader of the college community. Upon her return only the seniors knew the all-pervading effect of her presence on campus; yet in the course of one year, the entire student body has come to know the value of her friendly personality and of her executive ability which since 1930 has fostered the growth of Connecticut College. WARNER SMILES, TELLS OF FAYORITE STATEARIZONA MISS BURTON'S CAROLINIAN DRAWL LILTS ACROSS WIRE HONORARY MEMBERS THEY GUIDE MEMBERS OF THE SENIOR CLASS Following a time-honored tradition, this year's seniors asked three members of the college admin- istration to join its ranks as honorary members of the class at the end of sophomore year. Dr. Florence Warner, head of the economics depart- ment, Miss Dorothea Burton, secretary to the dean of students and Dr. Beatrice Reynolds, as- sociate professor of history, have attended every class function from Mascot Hunt to the Senior Banquet. Chosen for their friendliness and well- rounded personality, they have joined in the spirit of fun and good fellowship by uniting in the general merriment of the junior banquet, by singing as loudly as the students at the class picnic and by forming an amiable receiving line at the senior prom. Alverna Bur- dick, dean of students, knows not only the aca- demic standing of each student but her social standing as well. Constantly barraged with such questions as: May I have an extra night?, How can I get off pro?, and Is there any chance of our getting the suite on second floor Harkness?, the dean is always armed with a straight-faced humor and an incredible insight which characterize her patient, thought-provok- ing answers. Her ability to correlate names, faces, majors, fathers professions, escorts, and recent illnesses is a source of never ending astonishment, and her keen understanding of the most personal problems is a source of everlasting admiration. Students are invited to their homes for tea, coffee, and friendly discussions and quickly learn that a department head is a far cry from the cold, austere prototype. Assuming the responsibility of transfusing the open mind with intellectual alert- ness, they are always on call to guide the sopho- mores, juniors and seniors along the most direct path to a consummate college education. THE SENIORS Page thirteen EDITORIAL LONG-TERM WITH AN EYE TOWARD But I don't want to go among mad people, protested Alice. Oh you can't help that, said the Chcs-hire Cat, We're all mad here. You've heard of things like post-war expansion in a liberal arts college? Of course, said Alice. You've seen the piles of brick and steel and the frenzied workmen on the north side of cam- pus. They're furiously constructing to meet the fall deadline, so that there will be rooms and beds and things for incoming students. Absolutely necessary, murmured Alice. No Quonset huts for us. But they haven't stopped with one. There are seven new pre-fabricated buildings for faculty members, for many who have returned from overseas will want to be near their chosen pro- fession. And then the plans for a minor Mayo clinic are becoming concretized. Verily, a housing boon, said Alice, but who will inhabit these structures? The Cat's grin broadened. Oh you forget the fine scholastic standing of this educational insti- tution. In the midst of the madness of the world, we have maintained an equitable prestige in belles-lettres; enterprising scholars over two thousandare pounding the admissions office for the two hundred vacancies in the freshman class. Alice shifted her weight, and the Cat con- tinued. You see, we have the modern outlook. We have to, in order to keep up with the modern generation. We are introducing into the curricu- lum practical courses with the theoretical; there are so many young veterans who must pursue technological courses here in the summer. And with the girls who enlist from other colleges why, what a wealth of ideas; a veritable melting n pot. PICTURE OF THE WEEK: PLANNING EXPANSIVE POLICIES The practicable democracy, murmured Alice, but But we still have our eyes on Europe. Of course, when there is safe travel to Europe once more, we will want to teach those Over There how much we have profited from research in our security., We will want to send exchange students who will best represent us in the cultural rehabili- tation programs and promote a more internation- al understanding. So far, we have touched them only through relief programs. But you can see that we are wide awake. I can see that, Alice cried. But where will be the leisure for contemplation in this program? What else happens in this Neutra Utopia? Oh mores, the Cat sighed. Of course there will be recreational facilities. We will have more of the fine musical performancesthe universal concert series, more theatrical ventures into experimental dramas, literary magazines on pro- fessional bases, progressive documents in the li- brary, and he licked his chops, Ambrosia in every kitchen. But Alice wrinkled her forehead. You don't understand. How may girls further enjoy their immersion in this streamlined society? You are young, my dear. We will be attuned to the times and clocks and synchronized bells. By mechanized habits, we will learn the value of concentrated thinking, so that there will be time for relaxation. There will still be merging of minds at the student-faculty teas, evening re- pasts at club gatherings, Saturday evening movies, and formal ballroom dances . . . Mad, muttered Aljce, Mad? Of course. The Cat's grin faded. But we're out of our ivory tower, we're living, we're vital. At least we're expanding and going some- where. So you see, my Alice, his grin disap- peared, there is a method in our madness. Amalgamation meeting, the all student core of the organization, has been the scene of several hard fought battles, but order and use- ful resolutions have usually been the result. Student announcers trained in college speech classes preside over all programs. Technical work is done by scientifically minded girls while origi- nal program material, both dramatic and poetic, is written by students in various fields of interest. The music department is one of the larger con- tributors to this project. Beyond their consider- able contributions of technical advice, the fac- ulty participates by giving series of educational talks. DANCE GROUP-Grace, rhythm, and motion are the three keynotes of Connecticut's choreog- raphers, the modern dance group. Led by supple Edna May Wander, this group is made up of girls chosen in special tryouts for their excellence in dance. Working out their own interpretations, the organization carries on for individual pleas- ure as well as for that of the school. Their reper- toire covers all types of interpretation from comic to serious musical productions. Through the years dance group has been con- stantly expanding its fields of operation. Starting with the annual dance recital, the girls now play a major part in many college functions. One of their greatest contributions is their addition of terpsichorean art and beauty to the Christmas pageant. They have contributed to the produc- tions of plays and operettas and have added to the many faceted Five Arts weekend. TO THE EDITORS FRESHMAN WEEK Editors: Probably the most hectic and exciting period in the four col- lege years is Freshman Week. Meeting roommates, touring the campus, registering for courses and making first contacts with Coast Guard cadets at the Fresh- man Reception is no small task. While there are Freshman dorms, lately incoming classes have been so large girls sometimes double up in commons rooms. To help with initial induction, house juniors are elected by their class to return early with the Freshmen and supplement the work of faculty advisors, fur- nishing help along more social and personal lines, explaining Page one hundred forty-two rules and regulations of Student Government, and generally smoothing over that first feeling of fright and awe in their role of big sisters. THOSE EXAMS Editors: Despite appearances, all is not jollity and high living on the hill, even though mid-semester and semester examination involve one tradition which students and faculty alike would rather see follow the happy path of all out- moded custom to dusky oblivion so goes the rumor. No matter how hard or easy semesters may be absolutely, they always seem to grow progressively worse. Yet, at their end, all vow solemnly, starting with clean slates, to study hard so that this may not happen again. Characteristical - ly, however, this ideal theory does not work out in practice, and last minute cramming, nights by a coffee pot, pigtails and red-rimmed eyes dog the most well-intentioned scholar. Although some play goes on dur- ing rest periods, 24-hour quiet TIME OUT FOR RELAXATION IN LIBRARY SMOKING ROOM rules and noticeable increase in library attendance testify to the seriousness with which these exam periods are endured. While undeniably biased, we feel there may be merit in groan- ing against the system, particu- larly as it climaxes in senior com- prehensives. In addition to finding the final clue, they must also have found all daily ones and identified the members and head of the junior committee. At the end of the hunt, the juniors have their ban- quet at which they are serenaded by sophomores. In spite of an ener- getic hunt and much heckling from juniors, sophomores led by Joan Brower gracefully accepted defeat as Skip Coughlin revealed the replica of furnishings for the library smoking room. COMPETITIVE PLAY Editors: Each class is given ten days in which to select and produce a short play or selection which is judged by chosen faculty mem- bers according to the quality of performance and choice of pro- duction. A silver cup is then pre- sented to the winning director who had been elected previously by her class. As juniors and seniors, the class of 1946 saw Nancy Faulk- ner accept this cup for a per- formance of Overtones and an effective scene from Euripides' The Trojan Women. Cor- sages of May flowers are pre- sented to seniors by their sopho- more sisters before veryone sits down to a rare breakfast of strawberris and cream. And long after the rain has shriveled the streamers and time withered their corsages, seniors remember outdoor chapel service with the little red piano drowning out buzzing Corsairs, senior picnic at Buck Lodge, and at least one happy day in May. On a May evening, each class, dressed in white, sings its class song and an original melody on the library steps. Judging is based on attendance, appearance, performance, and the songs themselves. Afterwards, all present rush to the auditorium for the senior IPHIGENIA, ROEMER, AND MOODY SENIORS GIVE THEIR CANDLES TO JUNIORS AS THEY LEAVE THE WALL ECHOES CARRY FAR ON A CLEAR EVENING AS CLASSES COMPETE FOR THE CUP MELODRAMA OF CLASS OF 1945 WAS PEOPLED WITH COMIC STRIP CHARACTERS Melodrama, with its leering vil- lain, dnshing hero, and shy, per- secuted heroine. Catcalls, pea- nut-tossing, and balloon-burst- ing are as much a part of the per- formance as the action on the stage. To continue the tradition, two juniors are selected secretly. Symbol of this choice is Iphige- nia, a personable piece of drift- wood, mutely affectionate and pleasantly ugly. Finally, there is moonlight sing by candlelight at which the seniors present their place at the wall on the middle of campus to the juniors. Page one hundred forty-nine TO THE EDITORS CONTINUED FATHERS' DAY Editors: A war-time casualty was Fa- thers Day, revived to full time status this year as several hun- dred fathers appeared in New London for a weekend with their daughters. Included in the visit were a stag banquet, followed by croquet, shuffleboard and tennis matches, and a variety show in the evening. Biggest attraction was the father-daughter baseball game with more runs made by base-stealing than by base hits. Another duration casualty was Senior Prom, gloriously re- instated in this year's college cal- endar the weekend after gen- erals. Editors: Although graduation is the climax of each year, relatively few underclassmen are on campus to enjoy it. Choir members may stay to sing at baccalaureate if they wish, but most un- derclassmen have departed for the summer. For some, the thrill of seeing commencement activities will come only once.
