1986 Tattler Conneaut High School 381 Mill Street Conneaut, Ohio 44030 In the minds of the members of the Class of 1986, Conneaut High School will never change. Academic requirements, sports, band, administrators and faculty members will have been fixed in time. CHS as a facility has remained virtually the same since before the Class of ’86 was born. But, CHS will never be the same again. The school year of 1986-'87 will be one of construction. The school year of 1987-'88 will be one of settling into an expanded facility. Never again will your gaze wander to marvel at the huge, old oak tree outside the library. You will not hear the band practice across the way from the mechanical drawing classroom. Band instruments will not be loaded into the van just outside the door. 1 Table of Contents ADMINISTRATION 3 SOPHOMORES 9 JUNIORS 21 SENIORS 37 Senior Superlatives 58 Graduation 60 SPORTS 63 Fall 64 Winter 78 Cheerleaders 90 Spring 93 ACTIVITIES 111 Student Council 112 National Honor Society 113 Band 114 Majorettes 119 Drill Team 120 Choir 122 'The Diary of Anne Frank’ 124 'Once Upon a Mattress’ 126 Homecoming 128 Snow Dance 131 Valentine Dance 132 Prom 134 Model UN 138 American Field Service 140 Buckeye Boys and Girls State 141 OWE 142 Spanish Club and Computer Club 143 Stage Crew 144 Senior Awards 145 'The Spartan Mail’ Staff 146 'Tattler’ Staff 147 CHS — a final glimpse 148 ADVERTISING 151 This majestic oak is 75 feet tall and 4 1 2 feet in diameter. Mrs. Humphrey had been a part of the Conneaut school system for thirteen teaching years. Mrs. Humphrey acquired her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio University. During her teaching career she had taught both English and Spanish. Mrs. Humphrey taught one year at Dixon High School near the Ohio-Indiana border. She spent six years at Ashtabula High School before coming to CHS. Mrs. Humphrey felt that the most effective way to learn a foreign language was to practice. Her advice to students pursuing a Spanish-speaking career was, I would strongly recommend that they go to live in a Spanish-speaking country. In retirement Mrs. Humphrey looks forward to vacationing in Florida during the winter and spending more time with her recently retired husband Stanley, a former CHS guidance counselor. She hopes to spend more time with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Humphrey's parting words were, Hasta luego, mis amigos!” Mrs. Humphrey conducts a vocabulary review in her Spanish II class during fifth period. 8 With the arrival of the sophomores in the fall of '85 came the Board of Education's decision to close lunches. To implement that program requires the conversion of Garcia Gymnasium to a cafeteria each and every school day. The festivities were kicked-off with a pregame parade. Six shiny Corvettes each conveyed a potential Homecoming Queen from the downtown area to Con-neaut Municipal Stadium. Accompanying the candidates were the CHS marching band and sophomore, junior and senior floats. The candidates, after circling the field within the crowded stadium, were escorted by their fathers to the sideline to await the crowning. Tension built among the girls as the crowd grew silent. Football cocaptains Rod Eldred and Dave Gamble presented roses, a trophy and the crown to '85 Homecoming Queen Missy Usher. Missy and her court of Beth Laituri, Lori Miller, Stephanie Myers, Lynn Rose and Julie Specht were seated as the mounted Spartan Nancy Champlin galloped the length of the field to lead the Spartans into battle. Conneaut and Geneva were scoreless the first quarter. Late in the second Chris Joslin recovered his first of two fumbles. A few plays later Bob Biggins (24 carries for 180 yards) bulled into the end zone. Near the end of the third quarter Matt Tylman connected with Don Giddings for a 49 yard score. With seconds remaining in the game Mike Kardohely nabbed his second interception of the evening. Rod Eldred pulled in a Tylman 12 yard toss with no time remaining for the final score, CHS 20, Geneva 0. The primary objective of each program is to inform students about the system of government in our state. Each participant gets hands-on experience in politics, working at both the state and local levels. This mock government consists of two parties, the Federalist and the Nationalist. Each delegate is appointed to one of these parties and he or she actively campaigns for a political office of his or her choice. The positions available range from dog catcher to county coroner to state representative to governor. Various issues are debated and city laws are established by the elected officials. The American Legion sponsored the one week Buckeye Boys State. In the summer of 85 it was held at Bowling Green State University. The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary sponsored Buckeye Girls State which was held at Ashland College last year. Left top seated: Sue Staudacher and Angela Peji. They are then screened by the coordinator, guidance counselors and administrators. In addition to courses required for graduation OWE class work includes money and banking, budgeting, health, employee-employer relations, communication, job seeking and other work related skills. Following four periods of class work per day students are released to work. At the approved job stations students develop through work experience the necessary attitudes, skills and abilities which will enable them to be gainfully employed. 142 Clubs, Spanish and Computer, gain interest Above: Kim Drummond, Janet Mvers, Joanne Eldred, Stacy Bowers. Voters approved a $3.8 million bond issue November 5,1985, to add 50,000 square feet to CHS. Additions will include a new kitchen, cafeteria, music department, mechanical drawing room and two classrooms. Expansion of the library, office, metal shop and wood shop will take place. Relocation of the art room, science labs and study hall 8-10 will occur. Space will become available for physical education and additional classrooms. Other renovations will also be done. A delay in this project surfaced when the election results were ruled invalid. Four months later Judge Joseph Mahoney made an adjustment to the millage and validated the results. Construction began late in the summer of 1986. Right top: Students eat lunch in Garcia Gymnasium cafeteria Right middle: The east side of the English wing will become the site of the kitchen cafeteria with a raised stage. Right bottom: The music department, mechanical drawing room and two classrooms will utilize the largest portion of this area north of the metal shop.
