Boys' and Girls’ Buckeye State is held each year in order to teach young adults about their land and government. Each year interested students write an essay and go through an interview with the American Legion Auxiliary. From the students who have applied, four are chosen to represent Conneaut and our high school at Ashland College and Bowling Green State University. While at Buckeye State, the representatives are separated into cities and political parties. They then proceed to run for elective offices on either the Nationalist or Federalist ticket. During their stay, the representatives are honored with speeches from many political dignitaries, including the governor of Ohio. Under a new revised constitution, all student council members were placed in a single homeroom, creating a better working environment. Some of the activities performed by Student Council during the year included Homecoming, Spirit Chain, Teacher Appreciation Day, and many other services to both school and community. Advisors this year were Mr. Gaukel and Mr. Freeman, and officers were: Greg Gamble, President; Nick larocci, Vice-President; Sharon Smith, Secretary; and Todd Griffey, Treasurer. All in all, the year was termed successful by those involved. Top to bottom: Greg Gamble. Nick larocci, Sharon Smith. Todd Griffey. 1st Row: Kelly Ingersoll, Nick larocci. Greg Gamble. To be eligible, students must maintain a high standard of scholarship, as indicated by an academic average of at least 3.200. Members must exhibit the traits of good character, demonstrate leadership abilities of high quality, and provide unselfish service to both the school and the community. In addition to its annual initiation ceremony and the traditional banquet honoring new members, the CHS chapter went caroling at Christmas and sponsored a very successful Toga Dance in the spring. Officers elected for the 1980-1981 school year were Bill Mirando, president; Henry Frey, vice president; Brent Griffey, treasurer; and Suzanne Griffith, secretary. 118 il; F A S' t C' 3 LI L - LB1 Above: Fe Tagle, A CHS senior, spent this past year in Thailand as an exchange student. EXCHANGE STUDENTS Dear C.H.S., It has all been too soon ... it seems like last week I arrived and tomorrow I must leave. This year on A.F.S. has been a terrific learning and growing experience for me. I’ve met alot of people, made some lifelong friends, and have been to some different places. You’ll always be a part of me that is special. Don’t get the idea that this is goodbye — it's really adios” because I intend to come back. I'd just like to thank everybody that made my year possible, especially the Primes, and I look forward to seeing you again. I think I’ve learned many things about this school and its people, and I found an abundance of great memories. The fact that schools in my country are in a way different from the ones here made it even more exciting. Since we don’t have so many extracurricular activities, I enjoyed being at Band camp and participating on the volleyball team. I never realized that a year could be so short! She put up with the bunch of us very admirably, and deserves something to recognize this achievement like an all — expense paid vacation to the funny farm. She proofread, and many times, redid our sections. Despite this we still enjoyed our year with her. Kathi Bailey had the dubious honor of co-editor. This consisted of doing the jobs that no one else wanted to do. She also did some art work like the Senior Divider and Gameboard, the Junior Divider, and the Advertising Section. Kathi also worked on the Tattler Section, the Awards Assembly, and was the yearbook’s financial manager. Kevin Marcy was our editor, photographer, and tormentor. He divided his time between Edie and the Sports Section (in that order). He also worked on the Junior section. 152 Henry Frey was our art editor. He did the advertising section divider page, the Valentine Court, and the Senior Gameboard. Beth Merritt worked on the advertising section (when she wasn't having her shirt ripped off). Kim Distelrath also joined our staff late in the year. Kim worked mainly on the Courts. Cathy Doran joined our staff late in the year. She was about the only one working. Her work on Sports was terrific. Stacey Webb worked on the Sophomore Section with Tilly. She also worked on the Advertising Section. Kim Parker and Nancy Evans worked on the Senior Section. After turning in their section, Kim and Nancy helped the rest of us on our sections. 153 Brenda Shean and Cyndy Marn both worked on the activities section. Cyndy also worked on the Senior section and Brenda did the All Games Have . . . series. Despite gripes and groans, Tracy Miller did a lot of work on the yearbook including the Junior and Activity Section. Lisa Distelrath was the creator of the Teacher section. Lisa is the other artist on the staff, doing the Activities divider. Unfortunately, we do not have pictures of Julie Fields or Dan Haney, (in the case of Dan, it’s our gain!) Julie, better known as '‘Tilly, worked on the Sophomore section with Stacey. Dan did the Sports Divider page. SPECIAL THANKS TO: Debbie Stills — Advertising Debbie Bowers — Typing Ed Paneto — Art Vinnie Rose — Art Doreen Norton — Art Tom Chaffee — Our Herff Jones Representative The Tattler Staff would like to thank everyone that helped us complete this yearbook, hopefully successfully. To next year's Tattler Staff, we leave the mess in the Tattler Office, the top left-hand drawer in the safe, the three useless typewriters on the floor, and our passes to studyhall for goofing around too much in Tattler. Sheppard — C.P.A. All games must ... END! The game of the 81 school year ended like it began; everyone wondering and excited as to what will happen next. Some players followed the rules all along, others constantly broke them. The number of players changed from 676 to 640 as people transferred in, were expelled or transferred out. The football season came and went, as did the wrestling and basketball seasons. The senior class variety show made a large profit and was also a big hit! The Gong Show paid off nicely too. As May approached though, only the juniors worried about money-making projects. While all along, underclassmen had been counting the days until summer vacation. So if the object of the C.H.S. game really is to complete one 178-day school year with some sense of sanity, then most students managed to make 1980-1981 a success. Through all the work, headaches and disagreements the school year still captured all the fun of everyone’s favorite game. —
