Last year the CHS varsity squad lost four of its five starting players. The only returning letterman was Tom Dennison, recipient of the Tim Fitzgerald Memorial Trophy for 1978. This year's team did not finish 1st in the NEC as it did last year, but as Coach Chuck Ott put it, Any time a team loses 4 out of 5 starters its hard to come back and be 1. Members of the varsity squad for the 78 season were juniors Tom Dennison, Chuck Hardin and Rudy Pryately; seniors Jeff Lebzelter and Mark Henning and sophomores Randy Toddy and Greg Gamble. Coach Ott felt the team did reasonably well considering the tremendous inexperience of the squad.
