Although I am going away, I won’t say good-bye, because you are going with me in a very special place—in my heart. I’ll see you. Los quiero mucho. Work to eat. My first snow. I like it!! My American family. Dear friends, This year is one I never will forget! Your warm friendship and Spartan spirit will be always with me. I’ll miss all those rough football games, basketball, and tennis, the excitement of choir and being a psychiatrist in “Harvey,” the fun I had in the different clubs, the trips with Senior Class and Honor Society and the Prom. I will take all those happy memories, together with your friendship and spirit back to Belgium. I feel so close to each one of you that I will have a hard time to leave you and C.H.S., but perhaps we will see each other again because, after all, it is a small world! “Walk together, talk together, O, ye peoples of the world, then and only then shall we live in peace.” Vrede op aarde aan alle mensen met goede wil!! Spirit of “71” Love, Ralph the Frog One of my favorite sports. Crowning Karen as Tattler Queen. “Happy Birthday to you . . . Ill Jeff In France Jeff and his foreign family. France, 1970, was the one most influential event in my life. Through AFS, I found a new family, and new friends that will always be a part of me, and hopefully, I will be a part of them. My stay in France was the first time I had been truly separated from my environment, and my first reaction was a sort of confusion and questioning of my 17 year old values. But because I knew no one, my new relationships were cultivated in an atmosphere of openness, honesty and friendliness. The moment I forgot I was an Ameri- can, and the moment I did not feel different, a whole new world opened up to me. I began to accept my ideas which I did not want to change. Living with the Leroy family on the southern coast of France, I grew to know and love my parents and my two brothers as I lived and shared in their daily activities. It was not a great “vacation,” it was living and coping with problems of living. The one thing that was really impressed upon my mind is that people are universal. No matter what color a person’s skin is or what country he lives in, he still has opinions, ambitions, and emotions just like I do. He just expresses those things in different ways. I truly believe that AFS is a realistic hope for world peace and understanding. When all the people of the earth can walk together and talk together, then we shall have peace. And to everyone who helped make my AFS experience a reality, I would like to say, “Merci beau-coup, mes amis.” Sailing in the Mediterranean. 112 “Harvey” The members of the cast of Harvey included Mr. Rhodes, director, Jeff Gerdes, Eric Dauwen, Karen Notte, Charlie Strawbridge, Laura Connors, Merceda Michelini, Regina Reo, Paul Rich, Kaarlo Elonen, Bill Marshall, Gloria Gleason, and of course, Harvey. Charlie and Mr. Rhodes pause by the portrait of Elwood and Harvey which was painted by Nancy Punkar. The Senior Class presented Harvey on March 26 and 27, to the delight of its audience. Harvey, a three-act comedy, was under the talented direction of Mr. Stephen Rhodes and student director, Gloria Gleason. The play depicts the family of Elwood P. Dowd, his sister, Veta Simmons, his niece, Myrtle Mae, and, of course, Harvey, a six-foot, invisible white rabbit and the constant companion of Elwood P. Dowd. The cast and crew worked very hard to accomplish an excellent performance. Chris and Elaine were only two of the fantastic stage crew. 113 Senior Superlatives Most Attractive: Karen Kleimo.
