Although injuries hampered them most of the season the Spartans went into each contest with a great determination to win. The Spartans began the 1968 season with a 24-7 victory over Warren JFK and ended the season with a fantastic comeback to tie Ravenna Southeast 20-20; after being down 20-0 at half time. The Spartans moved the ball all season long with the fine running of Junior backs, Steve Sumner and A1 Razem. Senior quarterback, Dave Richards filled in for the injured Harold Knight and kept his team in contention all season long. Senior captain, Mike Conway and teammate Lenny Cifelli led the Spartan defense. Conway won the Headhunters Trophy with 12 skulls and Cifelli finished second with 10. Junior end, Scott Humphrey, was selected first team N.E.C. and Sumner received an honorable mention. The students of Conneaut High should be proud of 1968 Spartan football team because they did an outstanding job representing Conneaut High School in the Northeastern Conference. Mr. Tressell stressed the idea of motivation and personal pride in athletics as well as in daily use. Mr. Tressell closed his rewarding speech with these words, “Motivation is more important than what defense you are going to use, and the coach must supply some of this, but the rest is up to the individual.” Mike Conway, football captain, highlighted the evening by being presented with both the Ojajarvi Award and the Headhunters Trophy. Closing out the evening, both Mr. Hartmann, football coach, and Mr. Ritari, crosscountry mentor, distributed awards to this season’s letter winners. Mike Conway receives Headhunters Award. 42 Ass’t. The Conneaut Spartans, N.E.C. and Sectional Champs, registered a fine 17-6 record during the 1968-69 campaign. The Spartans compiled a 12-2 N.E.C. mark, while reeling off three tournament victories before being stopped by a powerful Cleveland St. Joseph ball club. The Spartans under Mr. Fails, coach of the year, played consistent ball after dropping two of their first three games. Once the “Spartan Express” began to roll, the Spartans put together a ten game winning streak before being stopped by Ashtabula St. John. Next year the Spartans will have eight returning lettermen and a very good chance of recapturing the N.E.C. crown. With only two seniors, Mike Conway and Mark Williams, the Spartans were forced to use inexperienced wrestlers. Sophomore Kip Kurdas registered a fine 6-1-1 record and led the team in total pins. Other sophomores who continued to look impressive were Dominic I odaro and Randy Wood. The Spartans were also aided by Dennis Neiger, Len Cifelli, Steve Sumner, and Chuck DeMarco. Along with Kurdas, I odaro, and Wood, these wrestlers should form the nucleus of next year’s squad. The Spartans will have 12 returning letter-men for next year's competition and a fine chance to improve their 68-69 record. Adams 1969 We stood at the threshold, frightened and shy, Now we were Freshmen at Conneaut High. The huge doors opened and we marched in To be lost in confusion, bustle, and din. Though we tried to keep up with the schedules and pace. More often than not, we were in the wrong place. We had rooms to find, then the row and the seat, New rules to learn and teachers to meet. But we weathered the storm and learned the ways. And then we were ready for Sophomore days! We started the year feeling proud and free Cause now there were others younger than we. We joined clubs and sports, and it felt so great To really pitch in and participate! Our Junior year went by so fast, And suddenly we were recalling the past; Like planning a Prom, and getting class rings. Taking college tests, and all kinds of things. And then at last we knew it was finally here. We were now in our Senior year! No longer bashful, frightened or shy, Everyone knew when we passed by! Crammed between studies and yearbooks and tests Were banquets and dances and things we liked best. Then came the day a silence fell Over us and our friends we knew so well. In cap and gown — silent and sedate. We were finally ready to graduate! And though we move on — with memories in mind, We hope you’ll remember the Class of ’69! What a year I have had here at Con-neaut High School! All the sports, the Senior Class Play, dances, assemblies, are the things I will miss so much. Since the first moment I felt as if this were my home. I can assure you that you kids here at C.H.S. are terrific and I will miss you a lot. Boy! ... I sure enjoyed being with you! Because of the friendship of my fellow Spartans, I will leave Conneaut with many memories of great experiences. I promise I will be back! Outstanding performances were turned in by senior, Bob Anderson and sophomores, Jeff Gross and Larry Isaac. Both Anderson and Gross set new records in the two-mile and 880 respectively. Isaac was a triple threat man as he continually beat his opponents in the 100 yard dash, the 220, and the 440 yard run. LYNCH Best wishes to Mrs. Hiram Lynch who retired this year from teaching. The many years of dedication which Mrs. Lynch gave to her students will long be remembered at Conneaut High. Mrs. Lynch attended Salem College in Salem, West Virginia, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree - majoring in English and minoring in French. She did graduate work at the University of Syracuse, Syracuse, New York. This was followed by a profession in teaching, seventeen years of which were spent at Rowe High School. After the merger of Rowe and Conneaut schools, she taught here until her retirement this year. Throughout her years at Rowe and Conneaut, Mrs. Lynch had been an advisor for the Prom every year and an advisor for the Jr. Red Cross her last year. Everyone will remember her dedication, and those students who were fortunate enough to have her as a teacher will never forget the famous words, “I’ll chastise you” or “Your name is mud!” 168 TO THE SENIOR CLASS “That which is past and gone is irrevocable.” “Wise men have enough to do with things present and to come.” — Francis Bacon The real art of living is beginning NOW where you are. So seniors, strive to be: Strong spiritually —to take a closer walk with God. Concerned for others —to give tiny bits of kindnesses. Profoundly dedicated-to make the best of all your talents. Warm and happy-to fill life with laughter and beauty. Quickly forgiving —to erase bitter trifles and harsh words. Sincere and truthful —to live in peace with thyself and mankind.
