The Tattler 1968 Conneaut High School Conneaut, Ohio FOCUS • • • 2 ’68 This year at Conneaut High, along with old traditions, we attempted new endeavors, which we hope will become established traditions throughout the coming years. Highlighting the Christmas season was a large tree. Decorations were obtained from a dance to which the admission was an ornament. Presents from the student body were placed under it to be distributed to needy families by the Kiwanis Club. Also in December, College Day was held. College students and recent graduates of our school talked to students who were interested in college life. A candy sale was held in February, sponsored by the Athletic Boosters. Prizes were awarded each week to students who sold the most candy. All projects were successful through much cooperation shown by the student body. 3 4 7 Focus on You and Your School The Superintendent and Board Superintendent George Mor-ar, Jr., graduated from Brace-ville High School. To be a Senior and to have received that diploma is a mark of singular importance in the American way of life. The accumulation of learning, the processes which formulate this into a body of knowledge. forever distinguishes the kiefs of '64 from the young men and women of '68. And although many are proud of your achievement, we hope that the diploma which you have earned symbolizes the beginning, and not the end. in your search for knowledge. Remember, the key to your future lies in learning-learning your profession or trade to the best of your ability, learning how to adjust to life's daily problems, learning how to live happily with the peoples in our society. My sincere congratulations to each member of the Class of 1968. May your search for knowledge, success, and happiness be fruitful and rewarding. Sincerely, Eugene Veverka Eugene Veverka, Principal Lawrence Colson, Assistant Principal You have successfully completed the first major step in your careers. They finished second in the NEC with a 5-3 mark. The Spartans, after losing a season double-header to Painesville Riverside, reeled off thirteen consecutive victories, including five shutouts and a no-hitter. The mighty Spartans, relying on timing, hitting, and near-perfect pitching, went on to the finals in the Regionals and were defeated by East Cleveland Shaw, who eventually became State Champs. Named the Cinderella Team in the tournament, the Spartans beat Willoughby South for the Sectional Championship, Cleveland Berea for the District, and Elyria for the Semi-Regionals before being defeated. The Conneaut Nine was one of the “Elite Eight” (in the state) after the Elyria victory. The top three hitters on the team were Jr. Randy Adamack (.358), Sr. Captain Rick Bartone (.324), and Jr. Russ Kangas (.323). Coach Fails’ tremendous three on the mound were Sr. Tom (THE BEAR) O’Connell (7-3), Sr. Rick Bartone (5-0), and Soph. Allen Razem (4-2). Junior Varsity Baseball Squad First row: R. Furman. G. Myers. Kurtz. J. Yesso. J. Colucci Coach Zaiinski and Captain Tom Laine The Conneaut High golf team this year had two returning let-termen, their captain. Tom Laine and Tim Fitzgerald, both seniors. The Spartans also had John Yesso, a sophomore, back. However, after four straight wins, then a loss, tragedy struck. Tim was fatally injured in an auto accident. With this great loss to the team, the Spartans failed to win afterwards, dropping eight straight. Laine had low average of 43, while Yesso had 45. The other letter winners, Rex Richardson. Jim Burns, and John Kurtz, averaged around 48, but Rex and John are only sophomores and will improve. The team was in contention for a higher finish in the N. E. C.; however, the loss of Tim cut their chances. Finishing 4-8 in the year, the Spartans were 3-7 in the N. E. C. A memorial award in Tim’s memory will be presented next year to the top golfer on the team. Laine strikes again Waiting! Low averages were scored by Tom Laine, 43 and John Yesso. 45. 109 1968 Conneaut Netmen First row: J. Kananen. R. McNutt. B. Tucker. Second row: Coach McHattie, R. Hart. C. Lafferty. E. Lawrence. R. Hope. After losing nearly all lettermen from the 1967 team, this year’s Spartan net-men were in the rebuilding stage. Although they won no matches, the team gained experience for next year when they will be a team to be reckoned with. Representing the Spartans’ best was captain Brian Tucker with the best average play. After losing only three times in regular season competition, Roy Hart and Brian Tucker advanced to the quarterfinals in the district tournament in doubles before being beaten. Willie Wolford Award Banquet Scott Marcy receives the Bob Smith All Sports Award. For the first time in many years the Conneaut athletes chose to have a fall and spring banquet. At the spring sports banquet Edinboro’s head basketball coach gave a fine and very informative talk. Seven students and adults received awards. Kathy Gaukel received the cheerleading cup as chosen by her fellow cheerleaders. Willie Wofford was the recipient of the Skippon trophy for the outstanding track competitor. Tom (The Bear) O’Connell was selected by the baseball squad to receive the baseball trophy for a remarkable baseball player. Scott Marcy was designated by the coaches and a special committee of teachers to receive the Bob Smith Award. This award is presented to the most outstanding athlete who displays citizenship, scholarship, and leadership. The Moose trophy, given to the outstanding basketball player, was presented to Scott Wheeler. This year the athletic booster club inaugurated two new awards. They were the Andy Garcia 100% Trophy for the athlete who gives 100% for his team and school. This was awarded to Perry (Jet) Boal. The other new award was the Mr.(s) Fan Trophy. This was presented to Mrs. Richard Miltner. This award was given to a fan for loyal support of all the athletic teams at school. The Senior Class, Lettermen's Club, and the Teen Dems also established another new award which will be called the Tim Fitzgerald Golf Memorial Award. The award will be presented to the outstanding golfer beginning in 1969. Tim’s name will be the first name inscribed on this trophy. 115 Garcia’s Annual 1)6 117 A T ribute to Mr. Garcia Mr. Garcia is a native of Akron, Ohio. After graduating from Akron East High School, he entered Akron University. During his years at Akron University, he lettered in football and track, and played basketball. Before graduation he was honored as “Outstanding Football Player” at the University. Upon graduating he was a freshman coach at his alma mater for one year, and then he worked at the Akron Goodyear Plant before moving to Conneaut. He has been with the Conneaut coaching staff since 1942, except for a short term with Uncle Sam. After returning from the service in 1946. he became head basketball coach. Later, while he was head basketball coach, he assisted in football. During the same years, he was head coach for track. In 1957 he resigned from the head coaching position in track and concentrated his efforts on basketball. Andy claims his success is due to coaching defensive movements and good practice organization. He has a record of 312 victories and only 172 defeats. He was honored in 1966 by being elected to the Ohio High School Council Basketball Association Coaches’ Hall of Fame. Andy has also been very active in community efforts such as the summer playground program he helped set up in 1946. He has been director every year except one while he was at Kent State University working on his Masters degree. The parents of six boys and one girl, Andy and his wife have resided at 238 West Main Road for the past eighteen years. Andy is resigning from his coaching position after twenty-six years of successful service. Conneaut will long remember Andy Garcia as the “Coach,” and, as a final tribute, will name the Conneaut High School gymnasium in honor of him. 118 de- £y JCdzjr uy - yisO Lr.
