We wish to express our appreciation for the time and effort you have spent in making our years at Conneaut High School memorable . Your constant endeavor for perfection in our plays has been recognized not only by the student body, but also by the citizens of our community. Again we wish to thank you. 4 3 N M E M 0 R 1 A M MISS LOTTIE PECK FOR many years Conneaut Senior High School was privileged to come under the inspiring influence of Miss Lottie Peck, who instilled such high ideals in her pupils that her influence will be felt in our community for years to come. Miss Peck worked continuously to maintain high scho lastic standards for our school and tried at ail times to build good moral character in her pupils. Always available to help students and fellow-teachers in a cheerful, understanding manner, she won for herself the admiration, affection, and respect of those so fortunate as to come under her influence. Not only the school, but our entire community will long remember her for her excellent teaching ability and the Christian virtues which she displayed in her daily contacts. In her death we have lost a very dear friend. 5 Administration CONGRATULATIONS and Best Wishes to the graduating class of 1955 . You have been an exceptional class in your ability to work together and to accomplish your aims. May you always have the same eagerness and enthusiasm in attaining your later goals in life that you have shown in completing your high school careers . J.H. WOLFE. PRINCIPAL CONGRATULATIONS, Seniors of 1955, upon your graduation from High School. You now stand on the threshold of new and greater opportunities, and with them new and greater responsibilities. We, who have tried to help you win this present recognition, will continue to have a deep concern for your future success, and we look forward confidently to your contribution to our community, state, and nation. I hope you will always feel that you have so prepared yourselves for what lies ahead that you can face the future with confidence and optimism, and in the firm conviction that it will be more satisfying to go ahead than it would be to remain behind. The good old days should always be just ahead! Keep them there, and you will have lived a full life . 6 J.H. WANAMAKER. We started our quest for knowledge In ways very much the same, With naught but ourselves to offer And the highest honors to gain. We've been proud to be a part of Minerva's hallowed halls. But now like those before us We go where duty calls. The memories that will linger In our minds for years to come Will ever be reminding us It's Conneaut High we're from. We appreciate the teachers, Who have taught us all we know, And have tried in some small way Our gratitude to show. We're leaving dear Conneaut High School and are fearfully looking ahead To the days and years that will follow And the various paths we shall tread. And thus closes another chapter In this game of life we play, But the lessons taught let's keep in mind With the parting of each day. Nancy M. It was held at Girard Community Park. The Seniors enjoyed many activities including football, games, and eating. The next day many students sported bangs and bruises as a result of these activities . In spite of this, all enjoyed themselves. Chaperones for the event were Miss Kennedy and Mr. Macmillan. All the teachers were present tor the luncheon . 34 Senior Class Prophecy THIS is the year 1955, one hour after Commencement services. RONALD KANANEN, Senior Class Vice President, is seen entering the Senior High School. We shall follow him and see what he is up to. He enters the study hall; sits at the desk in the front of the room, looks around, and after a short period of time falls asleep. As we approach to awaken him from Never Never Land a strange voice seems to be coming from his motionless frame in undulating tones. The voice says, I am the spirit of 1965. Heed my words, for this is a laconic prediction of the future of your class. I prophesy the following: The kings and queens of the traditional kissing post, namely, JACK RALSTON and MARSHA SANFORD, PHIL DOBBINS and LAURINE OLESON, BUZZY BRUCE and JOAN SUNDBERG, RONNIE HOWARD and MARY JANE DICKINSON, and DENNY DIPOFI and KATHLEEN (Jellybean) KILFOIL have finally taken the post with them and therefore, the experiences of the past have not gone to waste. Along with the matrimonial line, the famous president of the Liars Club, none other than LOUIE DIPLACIDO, and his sweet wife SARAH WEPPLER have made one of their contributions to humanity--a fourth set of twins!!!!! Moving into the field of Sports, I see REGINA KARAL, the number one lady wrestler in the country, with her manager, TOM (Oswald) DENNING, going to meet the ex-champ Gorgeous JOE WILLIAMS at Frog Hollow Gym. May the best one win! CHARLES MARKER is now head coach at Wisconsin, with RICHARD BRAUN as his faithful and dependable assistant. JOHN RISLEY, although receiving a scholarship from Grove City College and having made All American in his first four years, is now beginning his seventh year in college and still trying for his B. S. degree. The new championship team of Tiddledy Winkers for Ohio consists of PETE ARMENI (the shy captain), JOHN FOLEY, MELTON HOLCOMB, and JOHN ZIMMERMAN. Turning away from the sporting scene, I see BRADLEY JARVI still in the Marines, along with PHIL SHANNON and FRANK TABERNER, and being appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Services is CHARLES FORSTY, a reliable person. Then I believe we have a few beauticians. Why, there is the inevitable ANTHONY CONTINO, who has just returned from Europe with the latest ideas on hair styling. Trying his latest styles on JOAN GRAZLANO, he finds them quite satisfying. His assistants are JOYCE HAMMOND, DOROTHY HASKINS, and GEORGE ISOMA. In the nursing profession are DEANNA WHITWORTH, LINDA BROWN, CAROL BEAN, GAIL MARSHALL, PAT HOLLINGSHEAD, ANNETTE GRAHAM, and MARY LOU GRISWOLD. They are employed at the Whitehill Home for the Aged. (This was donated by Jerry, who has already made his second million and seems to have forgotten the first!) The music world has captured some of your good eared classmates. The Boston Pops Orchestra is now under the direction of ANTHONY CICCONE. Under the direction of his baton are such musicians as CAROLE CARMICHAEL, DARRYL HICKS, and JANET SLEEPER. Moving away from the serious and more reserved side of music we turn to the modem 1965 version of music. JOHN STUMP and his Rollicking Five have just finished an engagement at the Stork Club in New York City. The five are MIKE NOTTE, the president of the Universe, Madman PHIL SUMAN Jack-in-a box JOHN MANEY, Jellyroll BOB JULIO, and none other than Beanpole ROGER BLANCHARD. As vocalists, they have brought along the only singing mortician, BOB MARCY, and JANET GUTHRIE. They sing lovely duets. 35 Politics is receiving many of your classmates. Governor BILL SIBBALD has just finished a tour of Ohio, with his efficient secretary GRACE EMIG keeping him on the move. In need of a Republican candidate for the Senate, the Committee has appointed DAVID ROACH. Mayor of Conneaut, GEORGE GRICE, has employed ROSALIE CASTRILLA as his private secretary. SHIRLEY GALLIAZZO and NYLA BOGART recently opened a Pizza House. Helping with the business, BETTY BUKI and CAROL MARKER have put their heads together and have established a self-serve Pepsi cooler. (All you want for a dollar.) The famous Conneaut Blabber is under the capable management of HAROLD TAYLOR. At the head of the Gossip section are MARY KAY PAULL and JUDY SACK, who have always been good at this. MAURICE WHEELER and CHARLES VIBBARD are press reporters. Supporting actresses PATRICIA KANANEN and DELORES DZIK made an excellent showing in their last movie. Also rising in the motion picture world is JIM ELY, Hollywood's Playboy. Posing for daily advertisements is MILLY HAKALA, known as Miily the Model. Chet's Service has been taken over by Little Chet, KEN DEZMAN. PEGGY WHEELER is his efficient private secretary. Obeying KEN'S orders as grease monkeys (while KEN loafs) are HOWARD HOLL and GEORGE KAHLER. Having received their college degrees and caught husbands, NANCY JAMES and MARY ELLEN McGOVERN are now teaching at the Frog Hollow Institute. They don't seem to be agreeing with Principal RONALD MARTHALLER on the subject, Should Students Carry Squirt Guns. JACK MARTTILA has opened up a pool hall (with card playing on the side). JERRY ROOD and BERNARD LASKO are Bouncers. I see they are doing their duty--ROBERT VIGNAL just flew out the door!! Religion has had a great influence on HOWARD HAWES and RONALD TOVEY. Each is now serving in his own church. NANCY ANTILA has just left for India as a missionary and NINA MOSS has gone with her to be her guide. BETTY DITTLER and SUE ANN WALSH have just released their new book, We Were the Black Sheep of our Families. I guess ISABELLE TAYLOR and KATHERINE (Tootie) KITINOJA are still trying to get a recording hit on Yakahoma Mama. CAROL KENDIG is one of today's greatest poetry writers, with DOROTHY HATHAWAY as her proofreader. Listening to a lecture on Tips for New Mothers made by MARY ANN LEGEZA, (not yet married) are MYRNA SCOTT, EULA PAGE, IRENE THOMPSON and FRANCES BAKER. Conducting guided tours through the dark jungles of Africa are NANCY ROSITER and JULIE VIGNAL (looking for a lost Bull”). They just finished telling their guests that RICHARD CHARLES (Chaz) was shot at last year on this very spot. Luckily he was missed by a mile!!!!! Working with the Red Cross are JEAN SUNDBERG, RUTH MAGILL, and SARAH ADAMS. They all seem to be trying to pass the time while their husbands are away on other missions. The Imperial Pear Company has recently been opened under the capable management of PHIL MILLER (Pearshape). His secretary, MARIE MUCHLARONE, has just announced that the payroll is too small even though it already consists of GEORGE MARKER, JOHN STELLMACK, DALE COVER, and KEN HATHY. BEN SWIFT and BILL JUHASZ are doing research to help make bigger and better pears! Disgusted with life around Conneaut and its prospects for the future, SANDY JOHNSTON, CYNTHIA FLORO, and JOAN ANDERSON have joined the WAVES to see if they can't at least do their country some good. DIANA GRUEY and JUDY GROGER are very high in this world now. They are graduate Airline Hostesses. Still in training for a higher place in the world are ANN DARLING and JANET BURLINGHAM. Well, my friends, Ronnie seems to be returning from Never, Never Land and I must be journeying on. But before I leave, I wish you success and happiness in the future and may your fondest dreams come true. Good Luck !! ! 36 THE Senior Class of '55 made their annual Class Day trip to Niagara Falls. Arriving at Niagara Falls at 2:30 P. M. the eager Seniors started out on their private, conducted, and group tours. After a rather hectic afternoon of walking through the parks, the class went to Canada to see the lights on the falls at night. The following morning, after a somewhat sleepless night, the then refreshed Seniors again started on long walks to see the sights. By the time the busses arrived to take all back to Buffalo to catch the train, they were a rather tired group. All in all, everyone agreed that it was well worth the walking, the blisters, the wetness, and the pleasant tiredness. Class Day 37 Row One: Ronald Marthaller, Annette Graham. Nancy Antilla. Its aims and purposes are to be of some service to the school. In the past year they have planted evergreen trees on our lawn, polished the trophies, and collected ash trays and pocket-size books for the veterans' hospitals. Our hats off to this fine addition to our school. 56 Sophomore Initiation 3ANUARY 21, 1955 was a wonderful, exciting evening for the Seniors and Sophomores. It was Initiation Night! The Cookies were smeared with lipstick, smothered in garlic, and were subjected to many other tortures by the Seniors. Dancing was enjoyed by all throughout the evening, and climaxing the affair was free pizza and pop for everyone. Who had the worst end of the deal? Well, by the looks, the evening was pretty tiring for all when it was over!! 57 A Tribute To Our Moms THE Senior Mothers' Reception was held on May II. in the lower hall of Conneaut High School. Bouquets of purple and white lilacs and honeysuckle were arranged around the pillars and vari-col-ored paper streamers decorated the ceiling. The guests entered through an arch of dogwood and crab-apple blossoms where a receiving line greeted them. Introductions were made by Senior Class President, Louis DiPlacido, with John Stump offering the welcome. Mrs. Ronald Tovey responded. The entire set and lighting arrangements were under the able direction of Phil Suman, assisted by his crew and the Dramatics Club. Congratulations are in order for the entire cast and for their director, Mr. Tamburro. 62 Senior Play “The Heiress” Repeated For Capacity Audience For a little more.than two hours Friday evening, the capacity audience which filled Conneaut High School Auditorium was transported to the front parlor of Dr. Austin Sloper's house on Washington Square. New York City, in the year 1850. They were there to see the doctor dominate his only daughter’s life so completely as to ruin forever her chances of happiness and love. The occasion was the repeat performance of the annual Senior Class play. ’’The Heiress.” by Ruth and Augustus Goetz suggested by Henry James’ novel. Washington Square.” It was under the skilled direction of D. J. Tamburro. Mary Kay Pauli, in the title role, gave a superb performance as the gentle, unloved Catherine, trying desperately to please both her domineering father and fortune seeking lover, only to be repulsed by both. She reached dramatic heights in the scene in which she realized the mercenary Morris Townsend had jilted h£r and the climatic one in which she at last discovered and returned her father’s hatred. Both Ronald Kananen as the unrelenting father. Dr. Sloper and Ronald Howard as the unfaithful suitor enacted their parts most convincingly. Another role of prime importance was that of the understanding Aunt Lavinia Penniman. excellently done by Annette Graham. The supporting characters included Maria. Judith Sack; Elizabeth Almond. In the first game the Trojans lost a close one to the Salem Quakers, by the score of 21 to 14. Di-Pofi and Hinkle made the touchdowns and DiPlacido made both extra points. In the first home game the Trojans beat Ashtabula Harbor by the score of 32 to 12. Hinkle made three touchdowns and Williams and DiPofi each made one. DiPlacido made the extra points. In the third game, which was Homecoming, the Trojans beat the Geneva Eagles by the score of 42 to 6. Scoring for Conneaut were DiPofi, two; Hinkle, Williams, Dobbins, and Swift each one. DiPlacido made the conversions for Conneaut. In the annual grudge battle the Trojans beat the Ashtabula Panthers by the score of 8 to 0. It was the fifth year that the Trojans beat Ashtabula. Scoring the only touchdown for Conneaut, was Dobbins, who received a pass thrown by quarterback Jim Ely. DiPlacido converted to complete the scoring. When the Trojans journeyed to Fairport they found the going a little rough. The Fairport Skippers handed the Trojans their second defeat of the season with a score of 12 to 6. Hinkle scored Conneaut's only touchdown. In the Trojans' sixth game they beat the Farrell team by the score of 16 to 0. Scoring for the Trojans were Ely and Braun, while Williams blocked a Farrell punt for a safety. The extra points again came from the toe of DiPlacido. Next on the Trojans' journey list was Brookfield. There the Trojans lost their third game of the season, 39 to 7. Hinkle scored Conneaut's only touchdown, while Howland made the extra point. In the annual Dads' Night game the Trojans beat Warren St. Mary's 20 to 6. Scoring for Conneaut were Risley, Williams, and Hinkle, while DiPlacido made the extra points. In the windup game of the season the Trojans trounced Hubbard 53 to 0. Scoring for Conneaut were Dobbins, Hinkle, and Williams, two; Brunke and Krueger, one. DiPlacido and Howland made the conversions for Conneaut. 73 PHIL DOBBINS N I W JERRY WHITEHILL JOE WILLIAMS 74 DENNY DI POFI MEMBERS BILL SIBBALD JACK MARTILLA JOHN STELLMACK LOUIE DI PLACIDO JIM ELY 75 Homecoming THE tenth annual Homecoming was held October 1, 1954. The football team e-lected Carol Marker as their queen and the following girls for her court: Sue Walsh and Eula Page, Seniors; Pat Cousins and Lettie McNutt, Juniors; Sally Rositer and Susan Manniko, Sophomores. The crowning of the Queen took place during the half-time of the Conneaut-Gen- eva game. Co-Captains Charles Marker and Louie DiPlacido presented Queen Carol with a bouquet of white mums, and a crown of white mums was placed on her head. She was then presented with the traditional kiss and escorted to her seat of honor. A dance honoring Carol and her court was held in the gym following the game. 76 SUE ANN WALSH 77 Football Banquet HE annual football banquet was held on January 22, 1955. The guest speaker for the occasion was Mr. Carroll Widdoes, football coach at Ohio University at Athens, Ohio The Moonlight Serenaders provided relaxing music while a delicious meal was served by Miss Rudd and her Home Ec. girls. Highlighting the evening's events was the presentation of the Ojajarvi Trophy to Jack Marttila. 78 Row One: Elaine Oberweiser, Carol Arp Row Two: Isabelle Taylor. Kathleen Kilfoil, Delores Eddy Not Pictured: Doris Dixon Basketball Review THE Conneaut Trojans completed their 1954-55 basketball schedule on their home court against the Fairport Skippers. The Trojans' season record was 9 wins and 10 defeats. Six of these 10 defeats were lost by 6 or fewer points. These defeats might well have been turned into victories if the Trojans' free throws had been a bit more accurate, but of course that's all part of the game. Even though the season's record might have looked a bit better, Conneaut High has nothing to be ashamed of. Our boys were out there playing the best they knew how. They played every second of every quarter, never giving up until the final buzzer sounded. These boys showed great sportsmanship at all times, proving that they have what it takes to be good losers. A team that can take defeats in the way the Trojans have has really accomplished some thing for the whole school to be proud of.
