Uiluzlln Date 1951 1954 Setting Conneaut High School Cast Graduating Class of 1954 The time for presentxng the Flrst Act of the Great Drama of the Class of 1954 has arrxved As the cast IS waltlng for the curtain to use they remmxsce on the castmg thelr Sophomore year the constructxon of the set thexr Jumor vear and the rehearsals thelr Semor year The castmg of the play occurred on September 4 1951 Chosen to dlrect the cast were Nexl Slmp son presldent Alan Esslg vxce presxdent Jane PlZZl secretary and Leeta Contmo treasurer The chosen cast arrxved wlth fear and termblmg at Conneaut Hlgh School on October 5 1951 to b lllltlated by the brutal Semors After lllltlatl0l'l the cast settled down to learn the prlnclples of dramatxcs On October 10 1951 they extended an lnvltatlon to all thelr mothers to the Sophomore Mothers Receptlon The purpose of the tea was to acquamt the mothers w1th the dlrector the prlnclpal hls asslstants the teachers and tne members of the cast the Sophomore students Durmg this year the cast also had opportumtles to attend the athletlc games concerts and dances The Class of 54 rece1ved a three month rest mg perlod after wh1ch they returned as Jumor Nell Slmpson was elected Stage Manager Jane Plzzx Asslstant Stage Manager Judy Justlce Property Manager and Juamta Snyder Techn1cal Dlrector After the stage crew had chosen the settlng and learned the fundamentals of set con structlon varlous groups were chosen to construct the dxfferent sldes of the set The cast of the Jumor Play Dear Ruth gave a prehmlnary ex hlbxt of thelr dramatxc talents by constructmg thc stage to the left of the set The rlght sxde of the set was constructed by the Honor Socletv The eleven new members 1n1t1ated were Kennetn Adaxr Huey Breymaler Leeta Contmo Nanny Devlin Alan ESSlg Mary Russo Norma Sack Juamta Snyder Catherme Speer Karen Wolfe and Perry Woodworth A most lmportant phase of the set the upstage was the Jumor Semor Prom The theme used for the Prom was ThlS Is Heaven FlI1lSl'llIlg touches were added to the set by the football basketball and track events as semblxes Teen town dances and muslc concerts After the cast had been carefully chosen and the set beautlfully constructed the flnal work be fore presentatlon of the production conslsted of the rehearsals durmg which Nell Slmpson was the hero Lawrence McGovern heros companion Juamta Snyder herome and Huey Breymaler vlllam The cast began rehearsmg on October 1 1953 when the members met at Slovenlan Lodge for thelr tradltlonal Chestnut Hunt The football rehearsals were very successful the co captams of the team were Tom Reddy and Larry McGovern Three Semor glrls who led ln the cheers durmg the football season were Bev erly McCann Donna Clme and Eveland Alls house W1th1n a short tlme the cast of the Semor Class play began rehearsals for lts comedy Room For One More wh1ch was presented on November 19 and 20 Through the maJor events of the year the cast galned more knowledge and experlence 1n every phase of dramatlcs For the flrst tlme the Semor Gxrls Banquet was held at the Jumor Hlgh Cafeterla the theme bemg The Cxrcus Before the termlnatlon of the rehearsals the mothers ar rlved on May 12 for the Semor Mothers Receptlon and rece1ved a glimpse of the work accompllshed by the rehearsals of the group The last soclal actnvlty wh1ch the whole cast engoyed together was Class Day whxch was spent at Nlagara Falls On Sunday May 30 the dress rehearsal was held Semor Hlgh Audntorlum was the scene of Baccalaureate as Reverend Andrew Arvay gave a few polnters about the play of llfe Slowly the curtaln lS belng ralsed Durmg thls act we the Class of 54 are the center of attent1o1 and the speeches are dlrected to us As our names are called we reallze that th1s IS only a scene 111 the play of l1fe and that after lts termlnatlon the most lmportant act our future beglns The work and tlme requlred to make th1S part of the play a success are equal to the happiness and satlsfactlon wh1ch we have derived from presen mg xt Our Great Drama of Class Hlstory w1ll long be remembered by the director hls asslstants and the cast as the most successful drama ever presented at Conneaut High School MARY RUSSO CLASS HISTORIAN I u H i . 5 .
