r 3 3 r - I r 5 O The Annual Operetta, ''Jewels of the Desert” The annual High School Operetta “Jewels of the Desert” was presented March IS, 19, 20, the three nights’ presentation being to accommodate those who were unable to attend either of the first two presentations due to bad weather. The costumes were designed by Miss Vera Bird and corresponded appropriately with the Arabic setting. The dancing was directed by Mrs. Velma Shepherd, the musical department, including orchestra and glee clubs, by Mr. Kaarlo Mackey, and Mr. Paul Sheehan supervised the speaking parts. The principals were as follows: Nana, the Jewel of the Desert, Marv Shank; her lover, Benarulah, Maurice Di Pofi; Caesar, the colored gentleman from the United States, Ohed Ruffin; his pal, Cheeko, irgil Wylie; Nana’s father, Abdullah, Maurice Bittler; Professor Lythe, Robert Scribner; his captivating daughter, Betty, Dorothea Onion; Lieut. Andrews, Willis Dickson; Lady Grady, Alberta Laugh-rev; Miss Lythe, Ruth Borowsky; Carrieail, Nana’s nurse, Jackie Reno. Lillian Adams was the accompanist, assisted by Saima Holkko and Eleanor Burns. Stage Managers were Harry Speer, Robert Kitson, and Robert Manniko.

Kent and McDonald Winners In the Kent State Scholarship tests held at Kent, Ohio, May 2, the following Conneaut High students scored: English—Esther Johnson, first place; Physics—Robert Kitson, second place; Jack Cheney, third place. Chemistry—John Cowles, second place; Eleanor Burns, Honorable Mention. Plane Geometry—Thomas Soltis, Honorable Mention. The excellent ranking of the students gave Conneaut High tenth place in the city classification in which thirty schools were represented. On April 22 a group of commercial students competed in a contest held at McDonald, Ohio. Sarah Laslo was the only one that placed, which was first in Shorthand. This made her eligible to compete in the Bowling Green State Contest. tw’enty-three
