Spirits were running high as the night of the big game grew nearer. Homecoming week began with the students participating in dress-up days for each day. Wednesday a special Pep Rally was held for the football guys, which is just one example of how they were supported by both the students and the community. Thursday afternoon, everyone enjoyed the traditional excitement of the parade as they marched to the bonfire site. The annual float competition between the classes was won by the deserving Seniors. The Juniors contributed to the boosting of spirit by selling streamers and confetti. Student Council passed out balloons which were released at kick-off. All in all, it was a week of mounting excitement, spirit, and anticipation. SEE THE JUNIOR UN Under the direction of Mr. Lowe, the Junior Play, See How They Run , was presented in three successful performances. Each of these was immensely enjoyed by cast, crew, and audiences alike. There were also several people rolling in the aisles as they tried to figure out the confusing and hilarious plot. The Seniors stayed in style by performing the popular musical Superman'7 with the indispensable aid ofMr. Lowe and Mrs. Cunningham. Other than simply being a fantastic play acted out by some very talented people, the Seniors set a few records with their play this year. First of all, it was Connallyis first musical, and secondly, it was the first sell out for our auditorium. It was also well worth it, as you know if you saw the play. c. a. Dianna Haines and Delta Polk worked very hard in managing these blood drives. As a result of their hard work, Connally placed first among all the Waco area schools for having the most blood donors. It was performed very well by the CHS Drama Department and it advanced from zone to district, winning alternate in district. In zone Pam Pardue was chosen best actress, Victor Damm was chosen for the all-star cast, and Robin Wilson and Penny Courtney received honorable mentions. In district competition Rodney Bridger, Pam Pardue, and Daleforde Langston were chosen for the all star cast and Tina Ferguson received an honorable mention. In order for these people to qualify to run for a Student Council office, they first had to maintain an 80 or 85 average and the more than willing to fulfill their duties. Our student body did a good job in electing the following Connally leaders for the 1979-80 school year: President-Linda Peoples Vice-President-Kim MacGibbon Rec. Secretary-Jay White Cor. Secretary-Laura Frazier Treasurer-Theresa Busch ttttnrf ...n A A 3 Many girls had high hopes for becoming representatives of Connally High School as they tried out for Varsity Cheerleader. Of the ten girls competing, six were selected as the 1979-80 Varsity Cheerleaders by the students. These are: Terri Sanders Cheadj, Kristen Sipes, Vicki Courtney, Lisa Willis, Chandai Phillips, and Julie Lindloff. It was a tough choice to decide among the nine qualified girls trying out for Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. It was a very emotional day for these girls as feelings of excitement, fear, and disappointment ran through the air. The four girls chosen were Tina Moore fheadj, Penny Courtney, Theresa Pryor, and Sherri Cannon. At the end of each year, the faculty of CHS hold an Awards Night in order to honor those many special students who deserve awards in their particular class or activity. Of course, many more awards were received by students than these few pictured here. We wish to recognize and congratulate each and every one of these people on their accomplishments. a. Among the many awards given to each of the deserving athletes. Kelly Sipes and Shane Loftin were named Connally's most outstanding girl and boy athletes. They spent the day by inner-tubing down the river and then by eating at the River Restaurant before beginning the trip home. The day was immensely enjoyed by both seniors and sponsors alike. 52 BACCALA REATEeSR'S COUNT DOW The religious aspect of the Seniors' advance to Graduation took place on May 27th. The guest speaker was Father Vaugn Miller of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bellmead. Father Miller addressed the Seniors on the subject of adulthood and mature responsibility. The rest of the Baccalaureate program included a prayer by Shane Loftin, songs by Tim Page, Ricky Bush, Dianna Haines, Delta Polk, Debbie Sanchez, Lori Kreder, Pam Pardue, Cathy Bates, and Daleforde Langston. Ellena Yerger and Victor Damm read a selection of poems written by the members of the Senior class. Also, several tears were contributed by the most of the Class of '79 as they looked to Graduation with feelings of sadness and anticipation. GR DU TIONY The year of 78-79 has held alot of very special memories for the Seniors at Connally High School, both good and bad. Many of these memories will be much harder to leave behind than others. The memories of the friends they've spent together, the memories of a winning football team, the Senior play, and of course their venture into real estate with Rex Butler. But more important will linger the memory of Connally High School which will always have a special place in hearts of them all. They say that time changes everything, but it can never change what was . . . the times of their lives. . . . Does anyone have a comb? . . . Is my hat straight? . . . Oh, I hope I donlt trip . . . What time is it? . . . 3' These are just a few examples of the many thoughts running through the Senior's heads as the clock neared eight on the night of June lst-Graduation Night. After overcoming the ordeal of walking down the aisle, the graduates sat back to listen to farewell speeches given by James Hays, Valedictoriang Angie Lopez, Salutatoriang and Chris Cantrell, Class president. Following these speeches was the address made by guest speaker Bob Poage, which was in turn followed by the most significant moment of all-the presentation of diplomas. Again, the Seniors of ,79 experienced a very emotional time, one filled with sighs of relief at having overcome twelve years of education, and the uncanny desire to be a freshman again. What this is all leading up to can easily be said in the infamous words of Chris Cantrell: We shall all, teachers and students alike, miss our 151 big brothers and sisters who have left such a wonderful and everlasting impression on Connally High School. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i 55 CONN LLY HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORI M S HAYS If success is measured by the tangibles of awards and achievements, then James is truly successful. Recipient of such as the American History, Algebra I, Biology II and Government Awards, the highest ranking Junior male, UIL competitor and member of the Challenge team, James developed his full potential through his diversity of interests and activities. James worked part-time his senior year, as did many students, but his achievement was made even more special by the time he spent working and then hitting the books , resulting in a Senior year grade-point average of 97.6.885. James' future plans include attending Baylor with a possible banking major. Connally has been enriched by James' presence and he will be missed. E 35 2 S E IOR 19 9 SAL T TORI CIE LOPEZ Connally was hit by a minature ray of sunshine in the fall of 1976 when Angie transferred here. Her multi-faceted talents appeared in music and scholastic activities-English II, Algebra II and Geometry Awards, president of the Creative Writing Club, Drum Major-these are the representative areas to which the creative Angie bent her prodigious energies. Angie managed to find time among these diversities for social events and was rewarded for her engaging personality by being named Junior Class Homecoming Princess and Junior Class Favorite. Angie's plans include attending MCC and majoring in computer programming. Without her smiling face, we will all be a little sadder. . m www W, V1 K A KT, ,., 'Adv' I , -f , jQ'1f.,.,, ..- A'-. f of me Reach back for the joy and the sorrow, Put them away in your mind. Marlin accomplished its goal of slowing down the sleek Connally wishbone which had averaged some 300 yards per game, but Cadet quarterback Ray Praesel almost passed the Bulldogs into submission before their final shot died an agonizing death at the Marlin 10. The Bulldogs, keyed by the superb receiving of Kenneth Jones and the scrambling of quarterback Lamar Simpson, had wiped out a 21-17 Connally lead with their clutch drive in the closing minutes. Jones had receptions of 18 and 31 yards in the drive, the second coming at the Connally four from where the district's leading rusher, Leon Tubbs, smashed over from the four to put Marlln on top for ui aiiutnel' U. good in this see-saw battle that saw the lead change hands seven times. Jones' first reception in the drive came when Simpson's pass bounced out of the hands of Connally linebacker Ricky Bush into his own flanker's hands. Then Jones made a superb catch between two Cadet defenders at the four when Marlin faced third down and 13. Connally's rugged defense, led by Shane Loftin, Will Midgett, Jay Haliburton and Jeff Horn, had played havoc all evening with Marlin's veer attack, forcing Simpson to take to the air in the second half in an effort to erase a 14-10 deficit. Not only did this yearls team have to fight the errors, bad throws, batting slumps, and strawberries of a long season but also had to fight the weather. Rain cancelled the Connally Tournament plus several other non-district games. It was the rain that never let the team build up any consistent playing time. This year's team will long be remembered for its ability to work out in the gym and make it around the worst weather in years. The 1979 Cadet baseball team will also be remembered for its senior leadership. This group of seniors has set the example for others to follow. Even though they didn't have a winning season, those who played on this team know that success sometimes can,t be measured on won-lost records. 81 DURING RAINY SEASON IV.
