New System Hopes To Capture l Students' Interest In English The English Department this year has tried to heighten students' interest in the study of English by ffering a variety of elective courses, instead of simply requiring students to take standard English courses. Elimination of repetition of the same material year after year is also a goal set by this department. Under the new system, students will now have more of a chance to study vary- ing subjects such as drama, public speaking, short story, composition, or humanities. They can get involved in almost any area which attracts their interest. In the view of the English Department, the old English class turned the students off. At Conestoga Valley the teachers are constantly trying to change this concept, and the new elective system hopefully will encourage student response and interest. Rlkbt - Mt. Teachers Strive For Perfection In The Rapidbf Expanding Field Of Science The Conestoga Valley science department's major concern is to teach the student to observe and investi- gate natural phenomena. Added to the science department's equipment this year are the Phase Contrast Mi- croscope, used in biology to observcistructure of living organismsg Polarizing microscope, used in earth science to study structures of thin specimensg and the Strip Chart Recorder, used in Chemistry to make per- manent records of data. In addition to biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, senior science, advanced chemistry, and ad- vanced biology courses, the curriculum also includes a remedial biology course for those sophomores with a lower reading level and comprehension ability. In order to preserve the student interest the use of live material is used and all courses are laboratory oriented, spending approximately one-third of the time doing laboratory experiments.
