These words will live in the hearts and minds of Americans for centuries to come. They were spoken by President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in his inaugural address of 1961. They have a deep, symbolic meaning behind them, they show us the nature of a man, a great man, who was willing to work for the good of all. This yearbook is dedicated to this man by the class of 1964, in me mor y of all that he accomplished to make the world a safer place for people to live in. It is hard to find words adequate to express the deep grief which is felt by all Americans ove r the loss of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. He was more than a symbol of freedom, he was abeacon of hope for the American people and the world. His eagerness, wisdom, and courage will serve as a guide for the generations to come. He may be gone from the world, but he will live forever in the hearts of the American people. His t e n a c it y and determination helped to bring the United States through many critical situations successfully. His b r ave ry and leadership will never be forgotten. The nation has lost a great leader, and the worldhas lostagreat man. P.F.R. Four John Fitzgerald Kennedy--1917-1963 Thirty-fifth President of the United States Five F ORE WORD Joseph Addison once wrote, I consider an human soul without education like marble in the quarry, which shows none of its inhe r ent beauties till the skill of the polisher fetches out the colors, make s the surface shine, and dis- covers every ornamental cloud, spot, and vein that runs through the body of it. And like the marble in the quarry, we, the class of '64, entered the corridors of Conestoga Valley four years ago as a young, impressionable group filled with high ideals but lacking one very basic necessity--the polisher, education. And so we set out to attain our goals and high ideals always with an eye to the future and a foot in the past, but continuously acquiring an education--afoundation upon which to build, a stepping stone from an idea to a reality, a power- ful force behind achievement. As you turn the pages of this annual and look upon the members of the cl as s of '64, you will see that no written theme has been followed, but as you gaze upon those seniors who will graduate in June, you can be sure we will be ready and willing to take on the world outside be c aus e we have seen fit to obtain the most important factor in a changing life--education. All the trials and joys of high school - Can it be that they are done? It gives us great pleasure to reminisce, To relive the things done and said. But our class is not one to dwell on the past - Of course notg we're looking ahead! Our high school days lie behind usg The great Unknown lies before. Just how prepared to face it Is the class of '64? The test is now before us - Just how much have we learned? Have we listened to our teachers? Were our diplomas really earned? As we leave our teachers' influence For places far and wide, May the one Great Teacher watch o'er us And forever our footsteps guide. As our great class is scattered, May our God go before, And grant one day a reunion Of the class of '64. Class Advisors Mr. Edward Appel Mr. John Patrick Miss Phyllis Crytzer Mr. Robert Schappell Miss Alice Kendig Mr. John Smith Fifty-one CLASS HISTORY Looking back over the years, we, the class of '64, have had many doubts as to our ever reaching the status of members of a senior class. The years went slowly, but now that our last few days are drawing near, time seems to have taken a great leap forward. Looking back we some- times wonder how' we ever managed to climb that rocky mountain of ed- ucation and actually reach the top. There were several large boulders to be careful of and many precipices to beware. An occasional slip made us Wake up and work even harder. Asfreshmen, wewere the largest class at Conestoga Valley High School. We spent most of our first year getting acquainted with everyone and getting into the swing of things by joining various school organi- zations. . In our sophomore year we were given the traditional task of choos- ing Jackets, hats, and pennants. Slowly we began accumulating honors in the various athletic, as well as scholastic, organizations. No longer the baby at Conestoga Valley High School, our junior class began to show signs of maturity. We eagerly anticipatedthe arrival of our class rings. Our Junior Play, THE BARRETS OF WIMPOLE STREET, was quite a production, aswell as our Junior-Senior Prom. We, as juniors, proved ourselves quite capable of taking on and successfully completing every venture we could. And then we were Seniors! We didn't really feel different, but we certainly did things differently. No long e r did we approach everything with a childish and fun-loving attitude. We faced everything with an adult view, especially details concerning our f utu r e s . Interviews, college boards, admission papers, searching for a job--everyone began going in circles. But football games, dances, parades, andthe Senior Play, ONE WILD NIGHT, all helped to relieve the tension and keep everyone in good spirits. Now that it is time to leave the halls of ivy, we the class of 1964 would like to thank everyone who has helped prepare us for our futures. We will never forget you, Conestoga Valley, and all you have done to make our lives complete. R. L.W. F-iffy-tivo .nn-. f 3355'- Wfxs L. UNDER CLA S SMEN T X ' I I X X ml I I 1 sv I 11 Fifty-four. The Conestoga V all e y Student Council, iuider the strong leadership of Galen Zook, and the guidance of Mr. Sherr and Mr. Schappell, accomplished many goals. They continued to build on the foundation that had already been laid in p r e v io u s years. A Student Council works together, and achieves together, this is what the Council of 1963-64 has done. This year the main function of the Council was to promote school spirit and improve stu- dent-teacher relationships. The Council also sponsored it's annual events such as: The Homecoming Dance, Halloween Dance, Christ- mas Toy Dance, and the Sir Valentine Dance. They also sponsoreda Hootenanny on January 25, 1964. Seventy-one JUNIOR PLA Y The curtain fell on a packed audience on Saturday night, March 23, 1963, and THE BARRETTS OF WI M P O L E STREET was over, and clearly an unmistakable success. Only a few short weeks before, Mr. Appel had gathered together a group of unexperi- enced students and, with a little effort, trans- formed them into budding actors. Everyone who worked to make our Junior Play a suc- cess, and anyone who saw this moving and dramatic story of the courtship of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, will always have fond recollections of THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET. From unexpected callers to exploding bombs, the play kept the audience laughing from beginning to end.
