However, one by one the multitude of tasks involved in this undertaking yielded to the unselfish and untiring diligence of these men and women. We, the recipients of this project, initiated the use of the building of Conestoga Valley High School in September 1958. However, we blazed trails in directions other than that of mere newness of physical plant, we enjoyed more diversified curricula from which to choose our courses of study, increased activities in which to participate, and many new friends with whom to as- sociate. Herewith we, the first class to embark on life's journey from this school, record the affairs of its initial year in this Conewago. We hope that in the years to come its pages will revive warm memories of the beginning of the era of education at Conestoga Valley High School, 1958 - -. .l F' DEDICATION - f To our parents whose unfailing support and patience made our school years so profitableg We, the class 'of 1959, with great affection, dedicate the first volume of the Conewago. a 7Zew 714664 an Ealamtdm onestoga Valley loint School Board. The Conestoga Valley Joint School Board is composed of seventeen residents of our combined school districts. To these men and women have been entrusted the responsibility of providing for our education- Their tireless efforts in planning and providing the modern, comfortable facilities which we enjoy can only be repaid by those of us who use them to the best of our ability. Never before have we had such diversified courses, so many extra-curricular activities, and so many opportunities for developing our abilities. We, the class of 1959, look upon these men and women who have utilized their talents for our benefit as true friends with a sincere interest in us, and we wish to thank them for their time and effort. S Audrey Harnish Names Yearbook Audrey Harnish, an ingenious freshman, look-' ed at her map and used her imagination to find a name for our yearbook. When she discovered the Conewago Creek on her map, she noticed a resemblance between this name and a contrac- tion of Conestoga Wagon . As the Conestoga wagon is our school symbol, she suggested Con.- ewago for the name of our yearbook. Congratulations, Audrey, for the clever work. GRADUATION As the morning sun casts its first ray, With beauty, joy, and expectation, At last has dawned a morn in May, The day of this-our graduation. Of joys we've shared throughout the years, Their memories fond we hold in mind. The lessons learned, the friendships dear Within our hearts shall be enshrined. With God to guide where we traverse O'er mountain steep or ocean wide Weill ne'er be swayed by fates perverse, For He's companion, friend and guide. Each moment of our life's a gemg To make each count is our desire. Each new-found goal's a diadem Which to attain our souls aspire. May our aim be high, may we ever see That we wisely use our gift of time. Let our motto now and ever be Not failure but low aim is crime. by Betty Landis nineteen Ames September 8, 1942 LORETTA ALBRIGI-IT - Commercial Course Though she be but little, she is jiercef' ' Loretta July 19, 1941 Dramatics Club 95 Home and Family Club 113 Newspaper Staff 11, 125 Mixed Chorus 9, 10, 12g Patrol 9, 10. Those of us who were underclassmen at East Lampeter remember the choosing of our class jackets, hats, and pennants as among the high-lights of our sophomore year, and recall with pleasure the visit to the historic battlefield at Gettysburg. Among the many activities of our junior year we re- member the joy of the day we received our class rings, reminders of high school days. We look back upon the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Junior-Senior Prom as happy climaxes to the school year. Those of us who spent our first high school days at Upper Leacock High School recall how proudly we first displayed our class jackets on the day of track meet during our sophomore year and what a thrill we had when our junior play, Take Your Medicine proved a great success. Of course, we can not forget the excitement of preparing for our Junior-Senior Prom with its theme of Oriental Gardens. Both groups felt great excitement when they joined forces as the senior class of Conestoga Valley High School on September 4 in the newly constructed high school. We organized our class and laid plans for our senior year. Among the ac- tivities that stand out prominently in our memory of this year are the trip to Washington, D.C., the visit to New York, our Senior play, and the Senior Prom. Now as we leave our Alma Mater, we all join in saying, Our high school days were happy days. CZ? forty-four CLASS WILL We, the class of l959 of Conestoga Valley High School, being of sound mind and body, do establish this our last Will and Testament. To the To the To the To the faculty we leave only one thing-peace. Juniors we give our love OJ for memorizing Shakespeare. Sophomores we will our devotion to the teachers. Freshmen we give the ability to rise from their lowly position. Could Sandy Smith use a little of Kathryn Ament's quietness, Carol Maser's table manners are left at the plate of anyone who likes to eat fast. Kay Ames wills her goalie equipment to Sharon Watterson. Connie McCarthy gives her Phillies cap to Mr. Van Gorden. Paul Collins permits Brenda Briggle to employ his mischief. Virginia Stauifer passes her puppy dog giggle to Kenneth Knosp. Joanne Denlinger wills her love for making things to the Industrial Arts boys. Kenneth Steller's 97'Za average in chemistry he bequeaths to Jim Cooper. Steve Irwin receives George Desmond's trumpet. Betsy Good's sense of humor can be claimed by Mr. Cunningham. Bob Gehman leaves his job at Slinky's to anyone who likes shoo-fly pie. Terry Weaver's nickname may be assumed by Elvin Hess. Judy Hostetter and Sandy Mellinger give their stationery to anyone who has a boyfriend in the service. Jay Bushong's Boy Scout medals are pinned on Bob Shaub. Aaron Kolb wills his love for teasing the girls to Ben Deverter. Robert Hillard's way with women goes to any wallflower in need of it. Gordon Landis wills his quietness to some of those library study halls. Rush Burnett is to use Denny Furlow's pin curlers nightly. Darrell Lashley wills his ability to sleep in class to Dwight Brubaker. Dorothy Hess's soprano voice is left in the music room for next year's chorus. - Norma Leaman's skill in typing is left to future production staffs. Patsy Byers bequeaths her short hair to Nancy Mellinger. Gerry Shreiner gives her love for whipped cream to anyone who wishes to gain weight. As the lone male in most of his classes, John Herr passes his desk to any boy who likes girls. Shirley Steinmetz gives her wardrobe to the freshmen girls. I Jerry Poff's position on the basketball team is reserved for Jere Burkholder. Nelson Martin very reluctantly gives his red trousers to Mr. DiGiacomo for use as work pants in his secondary profession. We do set our seal this twenty-fourth of May, nineteen hundred and fifty- mne and appoint as our executors Miss Kendig, Mrs. Loar, and Mr. Gottshall. Its title seemed singularly htting as this was the iirst dramatic production to be pre- sented on the stage of this high school. The play tells of the difficulties of producing a high school play. The scene is laid during the time of rehearsal. Poor Miss Burgess, who is directing her first play is faced with many prob- lems, among which are: a grouchy janitor, a set of comically crossed up high school romances. a charming but stagestruck heroine, her boy friend, a campus actor with a swollen head, a disgruntled athlete. a flamboyant professional actress, a banker's daughter who has been driven to theft by her father's ambition, and her own romance. Sixteen of the most educational, interesting, and enjoyable hours were packed into this unseasonably spring-like day. CThe only thing unspring-like about it was the absence of the cherry blossoms.J Our tours through the various government build- ings and monuments honoring several of our Presidents served greatly to increase our understanding of the function- ing of our Federal Government and our appreciation of the men who have contributed so magnificently to the cause of freedom. The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was likewise an inspiring experience. The excursion provided moments which captured prac- tically all the diversified fancies of the class members. At the Smithsonian Institute the girls looked wistfully through the thick glass at one of their best friends, the Hope Dia- mond. The Washington Monument's 555W feet of height were certainly employed to the best advantage by our ath- letes who ascended it via its 898 steps and by the scientists who experimented with Newton's Law of Gravitation by --- from the top of that structure. Neither were the nature lovers disappointed for the city's various parks af- forded an abundance of squirrels and pigeons to feed and observe. We were extremely grateful to our chaperones-Mr. Rill, Mrs. Loar, Mr. Gottschall, and Mr. DiGiacomo for making this delightful trip possible. seventy-two ! I 1 4 I 1 , .V '- Y W. newmmwyvf - - 4 f, . The purpose of the club is to help girls become better homemakers. The girls learn to cook, sew, knit and crochet. They have planned several projects, such as a bake sale and a rum- mage sale. During the basketball season club members provided facilities for checking coats. In the spring the members will prepare a banquet for their mothers. At the time of the banquet the outstanding club member will be selected as zx 4-H leader. F. H. A. The Conestoga booters handicapped by only a few weeks of practice and new team mates because of the jointure of schools, played with an incomparable spirit. Having a good all-around team still didn't bring a first place to Conestoga Valley. When the last game of the season ended in a tie, Conestoga Valley boys found themselves in fourth place. Although the team wasn't permitted to enter league competition, it entered into controlled scrimmages with three other schools. No score was kept against Catholic High and Columbia, but our boys looked a little better than the opponents. Against Hempfteld a score was kept. Result 14-13 our favor. Next year there will be a J-V team allowed. The team will play eight games and it will be . composed of boys from grades 9, 10, ll.
