DEDICATION Other schools have had assistant principals, but we had a Su- perman. To clubs, organizations, and individuals alike, he was a staunch friend and advisor, speeding faster than a bullet to their aid and helping them to clear tall obstacles with a single leap of his pen. He possessed limitless patience and paper to combat endless lines of absent students, and delivered just rebuke to er- ring scholars. We, the students of Conestoga, have dedicated the 7969 Pioneer to Mr. George S. Slick in gratitude and appreciation. 19 •4 K r ' % 9 9 Intellectual Environment Physical Environment Social Environment People in the Environment page 22 page 44 •page 68 page 108 I INTELLECTUAL ADMINISTRATION Dr. Garwood FIRST ROW: Mr. John J. Students were permitted to choose a pair of electives, each of which was conducted on a ten weeks' basis. The elective courses were: Mythology and Creative Writing Short Story and Novel Speech and Drama Poetry and Creative Writing History of the English Language and Speech Shakespeare and Creative Writing The remaining half of the year was devoted to the curriculum normally offered to Seniors. This course was also available to those students who did not wish to participate in the new program. 29 MATHEMATICS Miss Davies The 1968-69 school year brought a first in the For- eign Exchange Program, faculty style. While our own Mrs. Tucker spent a year in swinging England, her du- ties as mathematician-in-residence were taken on by Britisher Miss Davies. Used to an English school where uniforms and formality were the rule, Miss Davies found our informality quite nice. She also felt that the many electives offered in our wide curriculum provide the students with a very good academic program. Her appetite for things American well whetted by her year at Conestoga, Miss Davies has every intention of doing some traveling through the States before re- turning home. Academic students frequently select: Business Law, Consumer Education, Personal Use Typing, StenographyAyping and Bookkeeping. Senior Business Education students, on recommen- dation by the department, may participate in the Work-Experience Program during their senior year. After completion of school projects, they spend their afternoons in actual business situations. Some remain as regular employees after graduation, while others go on to further their education, benefited by experience. This year there is a new three-year Work-Experience Program, headed by Mr. Saddic. In their sophomore year, these students receive their academic courses in the morning and work at jobs in the community in the afternoon. 39 Mr. Saddic Mr. Mechlin Mr. Meyer MUSIC Mr. Vanderslice Plaster All over my body! Football Queen Gail Schaber. P-A-D — PAD! It was the boot that kicked the '68 Pioneers football team to success this year. Chanted throughout the season, PAD — Pride, Attitude and Desire — created a spirit of unity, a desire to win, and brought forth enthusiastic response from the student body. PAD boosted the team to Second Place in the Central League. A highlight among the many excellent plays this year was Butchie Smith's fantastic run in the Marple New- town game. Our line earned a tough reputation thanks to players like George Schwartz, Lindsay Paine and Henry Gulbrandsen. Todd Parrish was a tower of strength, while Captain Jeff Young was chosen for the all-star team. Corky Foster, our junior quarterback and next year's captain, is one of the younger set who will keep up the good work in '69. The success of the team reflects the success of the coaches, Mr. Paolantonio, Mr. Golden, Mr. Keyser and Mr. Ujobai. Regrettably, this is Mr. Ujobai's last year as a football coach, but he may look back on a splendid season. Butch Smith 46 Foster- Up Up and Away. Under the experienced leadership of Coach Monahan and Captain Mark Venske, Cross Country sprinted ahead to become the Central League Champions. During the season, Mr. Monahan coached his 100th victory, an enviable record. Among the outstanding runners were Seniors Mark Venske and Rick Ryan, Junior Eric Miller, and Sophomore David Howse. The enthusias- tic spirit shown by the underclassmen was a great boost to the team and ensures that the winning spirit will keep pace at Conestoga. 48 CHS OPP Lower Merion 15 48 Upper Darby 19 36 Marple Newtown 15 50 Lower Merion 15 49 Radnor 16 47 Penncrest 21 40 Springfield 21 40 Harriton 16 47 Haverford 25 34 Varsity FRONT ROW: W. Headed by co-captains Sue Cory and Wendy Lockwood, each girl put forth total effort and enthusiasm was maintained throughout this somewhat discouraging season of games. Jane Nopper proved to be an out- standing goalie. With the help of the coach, Miss Dulin, teamwork finally became a reality. It is hard to cite any outstanding players be- cause all were valuable. More importantly, they moved smoothly and efficiently as a team. The season ended with a walloping victory over the faculty. pirn junior Varsity FRONT ROW: M. Hatton, M. Brown, J. Hunt, C. Cruise, K. Bloody but unbowed, is probably the best description of Conestoga's '68- '69 soccer team. From the start, the varsity was plagued by many misfortunes; injuries claimed many of our best players, and with them, our big drivers. Though their efforts were valiant, the front line could not keep up with the injuries. However, the backfield, led by captain Sam Woolford, was one of the best in the league. The Conestoga season was highlighted by a big win over Episcopal Academy, whose record last year was 18-3, and our first night soccer game on record. A part of this year's soccer season, not to be underestimated, was the loyal and enthusiastic support displayed by the student body. No win-loss record can show the stout spirit our team had, every time they ran on the field. 1968 definitely proved to be a unique year for soccer! 51 VARSITY FRONT ROW: R. Weatherall, J. With that first triumph the tone was set for the entire wrestling season. In spite of many unfortunate injuries, the team pulled through with a strong record of 9 wins and 3 losses. This season spotlighted many wrestlers such as Ricky Weatherall, a sophomore who had an undefeated season, and co-captain Clark Moore and Todd Parrish, who were scheduled to play in the state championships, but were pre- vented by injuries. Conestoga is accustomed to a strong wrestling team with good scores. This year's team reaffirmed the tradition. But the team also possessed an added quality that made it stand out — an element of style. J.v. fRONT ROW: D. Kirkland, J. Austin, V. D'- Innocenzo, D. Haase, J. Bagby, E. Norcini, W. Moore, B. The 1969 basketball team's season made up in excite- ment what it lacked in success. Although the win-loss record is a trifle discouraging, the season was filled with fast moving games in which our boys came very close to achieving victory. Unfortunately, their skill and dedication were not matched with the good luck they deserved. Head coach Mr. Gasser perfected the play Mr. Park had introduced last year, the clock , to be used against the zone defense. Dean Haase, Hondo , as he is known to his teammates, was an effective co-captain and inspiring player on the floor. Bob Berke showed a lot of promise and we're glad he'll be back next year to carry on the good work. Altogether, with characters like Zelmo, Hondo, and Reed on our team, this season was anything but dull. Basketball Queen Carolyn Hartman. The team consisted of five seniors, one junior, and two sophomores. Although the backbone of the team is graduating, three starters will be returning as well as many capable J.V. players. It only took a few practices for the six starters to acquire tremendous teamwork. The two senior substitutes as well were always eager and ready to enter the game whenever called upon. Although the team ended the season with three wins and five losses, their enthusiasm and spirit were never to be matched. Dot Wise — Winter Track Queen WINTER TRACK The season was off and running from the start. On Saturday mornings meets were held on various col- leges tracks, including Haverford and West Chester. At each meet twenty or thirty schools from several coun- ties and occasionally New Jersey waged tough compe- tition against each other. Notable Conestoga records were established by Paul McArdle in the 440-yard run; Geoffrey Walsh in the mile-run; and Jay Clymer in the shot put. Bill Jackson, Terry Leonard, Steve Carson, and Charles Hales won first place medals in the Novice Meet's two-mile relay. Lee Simmons did a good job on the hurdles, and Jim Moore won third place in the high jump. FIRST ROW: J. Sim- mons, M. Lashman, C. Huling, P. Mc- Ardle, L. Simmons, D. Miller, C. Hales. Powerful pitching was provided by Deane Haase, Scot Henkles, Carl Woods, Rob Duke, and Rusty Piersons. The able outfield consisted of Guy Calloway, Richard Stratton, and Keith Reihl, while Dave Greenwood, Bob Price, Rusty Pier- sons, Clark Fisher, and Corky Foster played a nearly errorless infield game. Long hours of practice, plenty of fast hitting, and Mr. Keyser's coaching helped make the '69 baseball season success. Although this victory during the rest of the season was not often repeated, the spring track team had some excel- lent individual trackmen. Jay Clymer, our strong man, became the sectional winner in both the shot put and javelin. Rick Ryan and sophomore Dave Howse ran well in the two mile. Paul McArdle, Lee Simmons, Charlie Hales, and Steve Carson worked together in a fast relay team. Jim Moore proved to be a high jumper. During the mile and a half run, Geoff Walsh showed his speed. And of course Lee Simmons was nothing less than outstanding in the high and low hurdle events. The dust has now settled and the races have been run — for 1969. But next year's team has a year ahead of practice and matches — a year of great promise. 60 Spring Track Queen, Tonda Dodson Harriton Lower Merion Radnor Penncrest Haverford Marple Newtown Upper Darby Springfield CHS OPP 79 71 401 2 91 1 2 76 74 591 3 90 2 3 36 96 63 78 47 103 39 110 61 BOYS'TENNIS 9 1, FRONT ROW: S. Tennis Queen, Toni Bushnell The winds of fortune blew on and off for the Boys' Tennis team this season. Although they began and fin- ished strong, they lost a series of tough matches that chopped their year's score to 4-6. Although plagued by injuries, the team never lost its morale and among their victories were a 5-1 win over Great Valley and a 6-0 trouncing of West Chester. It was a year of experi- ence, said Richard Beatty, team coach, and these are the years that pave the way to future victory. GIRLS' TENNIS The 1969 season was a smashing one for the Co- nestoga Girls' Tennis Team, who netted a winning 7- 2 record and gained third place in league competi- tion. The team, with Sue Cory as captain, was ably directed by Miss Eleanor Neese and assisted by Var- sity Manager Kay Antle and J.V. Manager Sue Ewell. With nearly the entire varsity squad returning for the 1970 season, Girls' Tennis may not only retrieve this year's winning score, but double it as well. FRONT ROW: J. Symington, S. They were haunted by the bogeyman, with losses outnumbering wins, yet they drove ahead and did not putter out at any time. The members felt fortunate to play on some of the finest courses on the Main Line, with a chance to develop their skills every day at Malvern. Three of the most promising golfers were Bruce Upper, Dave Haase, and Jim Dornseif. SWIMMING Yes, world! Conestoga does have a swim team! Under coaches Reicher and Wolstenholme, and captained by Bruce Cheney, the 1969 Pioneer Swim Team made the name of Conestoga well- known in the P.I.A.A. Bruce Cheney took fifth place in the districts in the 200 yard freestyle and tenth in the state competition, while the All-American team added Deb and Dot Wise, Cheryl Hill, Melinda Browne, Toni Giarrantano, and Linda Carpenter to its roster. 63 LACROSSE FRONT ROW: K. BOYS' HOCKEY The Conestoga Ice Hockey Team, new at Conestoga this year, had a great season as they went undefeated, with only one tie. The action was fast and hard, with the lightning attacks of Mike Tugel and Scott Fera keeping the enemy at bay while Jim Pye, Conestoga goalie, aided by excellent defense, kept their oppo- nent's score to a minimum. The sport was introduced to Conestoga by a local neighborhood team early this year, and has been gain- ing in popularity. The team hopes to join the newly- formed Suburban League and represent Conestoga High School. FRONT ROW: J. Pye, B. Weigand, S. Fera, B. Tugel. SECOND ROW:). Smith, M. Tugel (Capt.), P. Bullard. INTRAMURALS SOCIAL GIRLS' LEADERS Girls' Leaders rocketed into this year's orbit of activi- ties with their second annual Masquerade Ball. It was a turnabout affair, with the ladies asking the gentlemen. Two other big projects concerned the Cancer Drive and the Gym Show. Club girls canvassed their neigh- borhoods to collect contributions for the American Cancer Society. Members also helped with publicity and refreshments for the Gym Show. Bake sales and building the Homecoming float occupied the club's time as well. Through these, Girls' Leaders has tried to fulfill its purpose — to be of service to the school and community. BOYS' LEADERS This year Boys' Leaders Club grew to its largest membership on record. To keep everyone busy, the club sponsored a car wash, helped out at home foot- ball games, and sponsored a successful Christmas dance. As a highlight of 1968 their Homecoming float was awarded second place. The second half of the year was a little quieter. Most of their time was devoted towards collecting over $300 for the Heart Fund. To- wards the end of the year the club treated the mem- bers to a Flyers game at the Spectrum. PEP CLUB Pep Club seethed with energy this year, completing projects in quick succession. They covered walls with posters, masterminded five pep rallies, mustered sever- al car lines, marched with the Pep Band, glittered on Color Day, peddled programs, postcards, license plates, soft pretzels, buttons, tags, and shakers. In addi- tion they posted win-loss boards for all sports, ran a St. Valentine's Day delivery service, and held the Sports Regalia Dance featuring Sir Gregory and the Lords. Pioneer spirit soared, needless to say, with the boost from Pep Club. Pep Club FIRST ROW: N. Blahah, M. Dominguez, N. Holloway, G. Gwynn, M. Rayl, B. Bailey, L. Holloway, J. James, D. Dom- inguez, B. CHEERLEADERS The cheerleading squads, under the leadership of captains Gail Schaber and Liz Lunbeck, had a very exciting and rewarding year. Excitement exploded at the first night football victory against Penncrest and lasted through every sports event of the year. It crowned the hours of practice and days of sore muscles with success. Rewards were received from the fantastic spirit of the student body and support which was often overwhelming. Besides the thrill of leading chants and yells, the cheerleaders were proud to be members of Kiehner's Klan. The experi- ences of preparation and performances on the field and in New York, Washington, and Atlan- tic City will never be forgotten. There was band camp. Tonight , wild games under the lights. Fifth Avenue, tryouts, Victory Pioneers , and for the Seniors, doing everything for the last time. Cheerleading in '68 and '69 was getting involved and making lasting memories of a great year! J. V. Cheerleaders K. Chepenuk, J. Symington, P. Egan (Co-capt.), L. Wakling, K. Hartman, L. Lum- beck (Capt.). MAJORETTES This year's majorettes added an exciting air to the Band Front. The girls twirled both regular and fire ba- tons. Feature twirler this year was Nancy Blaha, who twirled solo at three night games. The majorettes ac- companied the band at all practices and on all excursions. Wrong way, Vivien D. Wise, D. Wise, J. Jarrett, S. Donath, J. Stanhouse (cap!.), K. Bill, L. Par- sons, (co-capt.), J. COLORGUARD This year's colorguard participated with the band in the football games and the trips to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Atlantic City. It also attended the Nixon Rally in Paoli. Practice was held every Monday and Wednesday with the band, along with a week of band camp at the end of the summer. Although much work was involved in preparing for the parades and half-time shows, it was an exciting year for all members of the squad. It had very high knees, straight lines, and lots of pep which made it an unique group. Folies Bergere My group had 20% fewer cavities. BAND MEMBERS (12th) R. Benko, j. Berkey, D. Betten, K. Bill, J. Not only did they raise great spirit at the football games but they managed to raise money to enable them to take three exciting trips. These included New York City, Washington, D.C., and Atlantic City. Under the eagle eye of Dr. Kiehner they collected news- papers, sold candles and pens, and sponsored a concert by the Mandrake Memorial. Kiehner's Klan Forty-five musicians composed the Conestoga 68-69 Orchestra. Besides performing in the annual Winter and Spring concerts this year, they also supplied the music for the PSEA production, Bells are Ringing. The Orchestra breaks down into a String Ensemble, which presented a Brandenburg Concerto and a Chamber Orchestra which offered a Mozart Violin Concerto with the accomplished David Watts playing the solo. The Orchestra accompanied the Band to New York, Washington D.C., and Atlantic City. Their high caliber can be attributed to the hard work and sincere devotion of Dr. Anton K. Kiehner, as well as their own ability. ORCHESTRA FRONT ROW: P. Tracz, C. Kunzi, A. Martindale, L. Hatch, L. Morri- son, J. Kinney, A. Kohn, C. Davidson, J. Spang, S. Gamertsfelder, L. Davidson, B. MODERN DANCE Modern dance employs body move- ment to express an idea, an emotion, an activity, a poem, or music, rather than voice, costume, or scenery. Imagi- nation and creativity result in individu- al composition. Although she was new to the club this year, the sponsor, Mrs. Swoyer, immediately swung into step and gave the club organization and enthusiasm. During the fall, the senior members worked on a dance present- ed at the Christmas show and and have since devoted all their time with the club in producing a spring show enti- tled Song of Myself. The founders, Jeff O'Donnell and Mike Carlson, headed a club of fif- teen active members with Mr. Woodworth as advisor. The club got rolling with three rallies run this year, and more scheduled for next year. SKI CLUB This year the Ski Club, was often snowbound with bad weather, which twice cancelled trips to Camelback, but did make its annual outing to Hunter Mountain, staying at the Edward James Hotel. They all had an avalanche of fun. Next year the club plans to limit its membership and travel to the less- crowded slopes of Elk Mountain for greater entertainment. FRONT ROW: J. Spring, S. Consist- ing of approximately 150 members, its sponsors were Miss Marilyn O'Neill and Mr. Gerald Gasser. The Gym Club practiced two days a week, commencing in December up to March 14, when its efforts reached a finale that night at the 1969 Gym Show. The Girls' part of the Show was en- tirely composed of club members along with the help of Miss Betty Tayes and Miss Margaret Faulkner. Tumbling was executed by Jane Russum, Ellen Morrison, and Dot and Deb Wise. Apparatus routines were performed by Dee Bouey, Carol Evans, Jan McCarthy, and Jane Williams. As Conesto- ga's only German teacher, Frau Gerhart's fall sched- ule left almost no time for her paper work. A request for volunteers in the fall brought about the forma- tion of the German Aides. The aides, all 3rd. year students, spend their study halls correcting papers, making bulletin board displays, and so on. Besides being good prac- tice for the students, the work done by her aides has proved invaluable to Frau Gerhart. FRONT ROW: M. Troisi (Treasurer), R. This year the club was host of Felix Gropp from Bonn, Germany. Bill Diehl also spent last summer in the Phillippine Islands under the AFS program. In order to promote these programs, many fund- raising activities were held such as bake sales, an Inter- national Week, a concert with the Mainliners Barber- shop Singers, and a Christmas Card Sale which were all very successful. 84 FRONT ROW: C. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Langhans, they held a French dinner, put on a skit, and height- ened the Christmas spirit by carol- ing in the halls. On numerous other occasions the club mem- bers were entertained by speakers and slides of France. SPANISH CLUB The 1968—1969 season was an interest- ing and enjoyable one for Spanish Club, sponsored by Mrs. Tomeu. The meetings, held every-two weeks, consisted mostly of talks given by Robert Christiansen, Bob Dryden, and Jenny Snyder who spoke about their life in Spanish speaking countries. A number of students went to Spain during Easter, chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. Tomeu. Everyone had a great time and all came back much improved in Spanish vocabulary. FRONT ROW: B. Dyer, J. Conestoga's 1969 Drama Club, fondly nicknamed Conestoga's Theatre of the Absurd , instituted many student-organized theatrical firsts at Conestoga. The club produced its first full-length production in No- vember, The Skin of Our Teeth, by Thornton Wilder. Directed by Craig Lucas and patiently sponsored by Mrs. Howson, the ante- and post diluvian extravaganza was received tumultlessly, It was so successful, in fact, that the club's spring production, The Time of Your Life, by William Saroyan, had an extended run of two evenings. Directed by Terry Glaser and even more pa- tiently sponsored by Mrs. Howson, this pre-World War II comedy was a soul-stirring finale to the 1969 season. To broaden their professional horizons, the club also took a trip in April to the Stratford, Connecticut Shake- speare Festival to see Henry V. Four hundred Conestoga students tried to ensnare nature's stark beauty as they created seventeen sylla- ble Japanese poems. They fur- ther enhanced the reality of the poems with illustrations prepared by Conestoga's cap- able artists. The result — Haiku, a new Conestoga publication. SPOKE It was a ripping year for the Conestoga Spoke as Editor Bill Diehl turned out one of the most creative and informative publications in Pioneer history. Articles covered an entire spectrum of interest, as their intriguing titles reveal: Letters to the Editor, What's Shaking, Council's Corner, and Pedrick Gump. Following editorial pol- icy of investigating both sides (or more) of a question. Spoke fearlessly covered many as- pects of student responsibility and, occasionally, irresponsi- bility. This was also a go-go year, too, as staff members hit New York and other fun cities for journalistic conventions. Thanks to the assistance of our faculty advisor, Mrs. New- house, Spoke produced a weekly newsletter and a star- spangled monthly feature edition. What's the answer to number 7? Who wrote this gem? To these people who sold yearbooks, the success of their appeals rested on the students. But to these same people the suc- cess of creating the yearbook rested upon themselves. The yearbook staff was divided into five groups: Senior Section, Clubs, Activities, Sports, and Facul- ty. Three groups met 7th period Mondays and Wednesdays, and the other two 7th period Tues- days and Thursdays. From September through the last days of school these groups worked feverishly to produce this official record of Conestoga, 1968 'You're kidding! I am awake Editors-in-Chief: C. Engle, A. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA This year's F. T. A. club had been one of the most active that Conestoga has ever seen. The members gained experience through observing and assisting the teachers at the Hillside Elementary School during their study halls. The club has had a variety of speakers and movies which have en- couraged them to contin- ue in the field of educa- tion. This club is growing in membership and will eventually be a very strong club at Conestoga High School, thanks to the leadership of the sponsor Mr. Mann and this year's president Janet Buerger. Then, for their Christmas project, they spent their 1968 meetings making Christmas baskets and bibs for the patients of Rush Hospital. The Easter project concerned the filling of Easter baskets for children of Royer-Graves School for the Blind. Most girls were volunteers at local hospi- tals and studied different health careers. They baked assorted cakes and pies at teachers' orders, and sold cookbooks to raise money for next year's club to visit New York. In March, the club made paper-flower centerpieces for the FHA State Convention in Philadel- phia. A troop of Brownies came in April and was taught how to cook and sew. For May a trip to Philadel- phia to see the material shops was planned. Thanks to Mrs. Nash's as- sistance the club had a happy and satisfying time. tin, D. Crumley, L. Wildamer, D. Shelley, D. BIOLOGY LAB ASSISTANTS Biology Lab Assistants are the unseen hands that help with labs. Their duties encompass the preparations for the experiments and then the lowly job of cleaning the equipment afterward. When homework assignments and uncorrected tests were overflowing, the members were always available to help the teachers. This was the club's first year and its continued success insures its place in Conestoga. 95 HORTICULTURE CLUB Amid the concrete-and-glass jungle that is Conestoga, a patch of luxuriant vegetation still exists. This is the greenhouse, whose colorful splendor may be viewed by all. From early morning until the close of the school day, the members of the Horticulture Club spend their free time digging, planting, and weeding among the flowers. Formerly, the greenhouse was the responsi- bility of the Biology teachers. The club, formed only this school year, should be congratulated on giving Mr. Heister and Company cleaner hands. Guided and advised by Mr. Mann, its officers were Dana Belcher, President; Tim Wilson, Vice-Presi- dent; Wyneth Carter, Secretary; and David Van Horn, Treasurer. By raising money with three or four doughnut sales, the club was able to purchase a dozen new chess sets and a clock to time this game of strategy and patience. A daring gambit was the club's participation in a Suburban Philadelphia Chess League where it took second place behind Lower Merion High School. The Amateur Radio Club currently consists of a small group of licensed radio operators formed two years ago to generate sparks of interest in radio and elec- tronics. Far from being static, the club encourages any new members. Their station has contacted many points on the globe, and next year they will begin a training program in the Morse code to obtain an amateur license. RADIO CLUB K. Hoadley, K. Bauer, D. Green, R. Not only do they help the secretaries by running errands and filing rec- ords, but they also help the guid- ance counselors in many other ways. Bookworms are fine, but they of- ten leave holes in bookshelves. To correct this, library aides are con- stantly at work, processing books, filing catalogue cards, and checking attendance. STUDENT COUNCIL Capably headed by President Dave Dillman, Student Council sponsored outstanding legislation and projects this year. Among the items were: the Faculty Board, Senior Examination exemptions, the Welcome Dance, Homecoming, Christmas Program, Jazz and Rock Festi- val, and the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Greater rapport was created between the student body and the faculty and administration. Overall, Student Council had a very successful and productive term of office. HOMECOMING '68 Bui we try harder — 2nd place for the Class of '69. 100 Queen Linda Cross and her escort Neil Marquette. An unusual turnout for the sophomores. The Pep Club really snowed the judges for 1st place. The Queen and her court. Boys' Leaders burning their way to second place. Homecoming 1968 The Homecoming activities began briskly with a rousing Pep Rally on Wednesday, with a lavish display of floats unsurpassed in years. The Junior class snapped up the $35 first prize with its Switz- erland theme, while Pep Club's North Pole came in a cool first in the $25 category. Pretty Lin- da Cross reigned as Homecoming Queen of 1968, her royal court being Princesses Janice McCarthy, a junior, and Kay Chepenuk, a sophomore. That rainy Thanksgiving Day was an omen of defeat — for West Chester! The Pioneers over- whelmed them, 27-7, for a smashing victory. Completing the triumph was the Homecoming Dance on Thanksgiving Night, troubadoured by Sir Gregory and the Lords. The French and Spanish Clubs saluted the Olympics. THE OLYMPICS Where's the fire? I wish my mom was here. Hey he looks familiar. The dreary day could not dampen the joyful anticipation in the many children as they eagerly watched the sky and cheered as the reindeer-less sleigh carrying our Pal Santa, descended to the earth. The jovial saint entered and presid- ed truimphantly over the great celebration that followed. As the children received their toys and other goodies, entertainment was provided by the Modern Dancers who pranced to the tune of Sleigh Ride . A humorous skit de- picting the Twelve Days of Christmas was presented by Carol Hartman and Mark Dillman. The program jingled perfectly and gave the children a pleasant memory of Christmas 1968. Carol Hartman, chair- man of this year's affair, and Student Council, are to be con- gratulated for a delightful tribute to Christmas. But if I let you get away with it 103 SENIOR VARIETY SHOW x Conestoga's Senior Variety Show brought forth a rich mine of talent. Held February 21, the show presented individual numbers instead of the customary play. Among memorable performances were Guantane- mera, sung by Milena Cabrera, dancing by Pamela Paski, and a comical skit acted out by Diane Shelley and Tom Kelley. Many other good acts were performed as well. The show, directed by Mrs. Toth and Pam Harris, was rated a great success. 104 Our Director. Delicious courses of food; casser- oles, vegetables, roast beef, macaroni, salads, cakes and pies were served at each of the three sittings at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30. These dishes were cooked and prepared by seniors who were ex- cused from school at midday. Various committees assisted at the banquet, among whom may be mentioned: the servers, the busboys, and the washers. They all did a good job. In charge of the affair, and responsible for its success, were Mrs. Parente, Ed Hanson, Jeff Young, and Sam Woolford. I'll sneak this away for later.' The moon was in the summer sky, and the class of 1969 was at the King of Prussia Mall for The Dawn of Aquarius. Mike Pedicin, Jr. provided the music as some five hundred Seniors and their dates danced or wandered from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. the night of May 16, 1969.
