Foster, D. Hagy, S. Welpott, D. Pollock. The Christmas program for the Orphans of the Northern Home is one of the most important projects of Student Council during the year. Preparations begin months in advance with collections of popsicle wrappers and green stamps and special drives for clothing and toys. The Christmas program was a lot of work for everyone, especially Judy Mearns and her committee, but the results were well worth it. Forty-five children attended the party, each receiving a gift from a homeroom and another from Santa Claus, alias Mr. Paolantonio. Besides the party, two truckloads of toys, food and clothing were sent to the Northern Home. YEARBOOK STAFF SEATED: E. Kearns, B. Buckley, J. Holman, R. Morrison, L. Ramsey, J. Hoxie, A. Babcock. The only blemish on the Pioneers' record was the 7-12 loss to the Trojans of Pottstown in the final five seconds of the game. The fine record the Pioneers compiled was truly a team effort which is evident from the number of individual awards received by the team members. Steve Welpott and John Beatty were named to first-team positions on the All-Ches-Mont team, while Bob Zanzitis, Ron Holliday and Walt Holland received honorable mention. Beatty, Holliday, Schubert, Welpott were also named to the All-Main- Line First Team. Beatty was named to the Philadelphia All-Scholastic Second Team, while Schubert, Holliday, and Welpott received honorable mention. During the nine-game season Holliday scored 60 points, Holland, 54, and Wel- pott, 42. Beatty, Metz, Murden and Burton all ended the season with 12 points. All this scoring would have been impossible without the fine blocking of John Beatty, Dexter Hagy, Bob Zanzitis, Don Schubert, Bob Stover, Walt Weaver, Bill Shain and Bruce Buckley who made up the Pioneers' front wall. Three seniors, Brad Pierce, Ed Wright, and Charlie Randolph were the stalwarts of Conestoga's defensive team which led the league in defense. Tom Metz rounded out the powerful backfield. Jointly responsible for the Pioneers' fine season were the four coaches. Bill Paolantonio, head coach; Joe Ujobai, backfield coach; Frank Rocco and Lou Caparro, line coaches. The 1961 Pioneer team was, in the tradition of Conestoga, a powerful, aggressive and sportsmanlike ball club. FRONT ROW: H. Shaw, R. Hodgson, T. DiPietriantonio, K. Stewart, G. Christian, D. Albert Billy and Robert Ater. A good schedule was arranged and everyone worked hard from the first day to the finish. There were several boys available for each position which made competition very keen. The team was fortunate to have a fast line led by Tony DiPietriantonio, the high scorer of the season. Bob Warden, voted the outstanding goalie of the area, and Ron Morrison, the team's number one inside, were co-captains. In the third week of the season the boys, angered by successive defeats by Unionville and West Chester, met and overwhelmed a powerful Penncrest team 5-0. After bowing to Lower Merion, Harriton, and Westtown, Conestoga tied in succession Unionville, Brandywine, and Penncrest. There followed three victories at the expense of Church Farm, Hill School and Brandywine. Hill School returned to defeat Conestoga in the last game. The final tally showed four wins, six losses, and three ties. FRONT ROW: A. McCall, J. Mearns, D. Ogden, T. Wagley, S. Medlicott S. Gibbons-Neff, N. Abernethy. SECOND ROW: Miss Dulin, L Haack, B. Although the girls' hockey team either lost or tied their first five games, they rallied to finish out the season with five straight wins. The varsity squad, com- posed of twelve seniors and two juniors, owes much of its success to coaches, Elizabeth Mason and Virginia Dulin. The co-captains were Dulany Ogden and Lynn Ramsey. The top scorers of the season were Lynn Ramsey and Judy Myers with five goals each. Much of the credit for the five voctories belongs to Judy Myers and Sue Graeser, the team s two most improved players. The Junior Varsity had a record of five wins, two losses, and three ties, which will provide a fine basic framework for the hockey teams of both Conestoga and Great Valley. Judy Mearns' mutt Buffy joins the team during halftime. This drive ended in one of the scores in the Conshohocken game. SCORES WF THEY 0 West Chester 0 0 Owen J. Bennington attempts to score. Irv Sentz takes pass from Dave Pollock. Under new coach Dick McDonough the basketball team ended a highly successful season with a com- mendable 19-5 record, the best record for a Conestoga five in the school's history. After opening with a long-waited for victory over Radnor, the Pioneers lost only one game in the first half of league play, a 64-62 heart-breaker to Coatesville. The team finished the season second to Coatesville in league competi- tion, and with a 14-4 mark in the Ches-Mont league. Don Ammerman, Dave Pollock, Lee Calhoun, and team captain George Waite all received the recognition they deserved in the form of election to the All-Ches-Mont and all-county teams. The team started out with two easy games with Coatesville and Springford but was stopped by a disappointing 35-37 loss to Owen J. Roberts. However, they came back to beat Conshohocken 22-14. This game was followed by losses to both West Chester, 34-37, and Springfield, 34-47. In the last two games Conestoga defeated Downingtown 34-33 but lost to Boyertown 15-32. After a 4-1 loss to Spring-Ford, Cones- toga defeated consecutively Conshohocken 2-1 and Downingtown 11-6. A period of losses was followed by a 9-4 victory over Owen J. Roberts which ended the season. The final record of 4 wins and 7 losses is not an indication of the outstanding performances inspired by the fine pitching of captain Steve Welpott and the timely hitting of Walter Holland. The lacrosse team under Coach Miss Elizabeth Mason showed a definite improvement over last year's team although the record was only 1 win, 3 losses, and 2 ties. The spirit and team play was very commend- able, and as a result there were many close games. Sue Medlicott and Nancy Edwards, the co-captains for the season, pulled the team together as links be- tween the attack and defense, and Judy Mearns accounted for most of the goals. The Pioneers were for- tunate to have Taffy Boyle as their capable center and Linda Haack as an outstanding coverpoint. One of the hardest jobs on the field is goaltender. Leslie Romberger, a junior, did a fine job at that position. Two other juniors who will be a great asset to next year's team are Judy Smith and Donyce Wooden. Miss Mason demonstrates to seniors Dulaney Ogden, Linda Haack, Trina Wagley, Linda Llewellyn, Sewall Gibbons-Neff, Taffy Boyle, Judy Mearns, Linda Palmer, and Sue Medlicott. FRONT ROW: L. Lambert, C. TENNIS Miss Bagdanow demonstrates to seniors Mary Lou Kerigan, Lynn Ramsey, Connie Wood, and Joan McGinnes. Despite the fact that the coach Miss Bagdanow was new to Conestoga, she did a fine job helping the team. The season was started with a 3-2 win over Marple- Newtown followed by a 1-4 loss to Norristown. The girls came back, however, to defeat West Chester 4-1 and Plymouth-Whitemarsh 5-0. The final record for the season was 3 wins and 4 losses. The first three positions were held by Joan Mc- Ginnes, a senior. Sue Phillips, a freshman, and Lynn Ramsey, a senior. The first doubles team was composed of sophomores Lynn Lambert and Marjorie Thorn. Sen- iors Connie Wood and Mary Lou Kerigan were the sec- ond doubles team. FRONT ROW: R. Metzler, R. Stamen, D. Beatty, A. Nagel. SECOND ROW: S. Tait, N. Clark, K. Stuart, B. Kennedy, P. McMillan, R. Williams, Mr. Marion. TENNIS Coach Mr. Marion with seniors Blair Kennedy and Ken Stuart. The boys' tennis team under the direction of Mr. Marion finished their season with a 3-7 record which was good considering the team was composed of main- ly juniors and sophomores. The only seniors on the team were Ken Stuart and Blair Kennedy. The first four positions were held by Paul McMillan, Ned Clark, Art Nahal and Bob Stamen respectively. Dick Beatty and Roger Metzler composed the doubles team. The most outstanding player was Ned Clark, a sophomore, who ended the season with an 8-2 record. Conestoga can expect a fine tennis team next year; five of the first seven men will be returning. Great Valley will inherit Bob Stamen, John Powell and the fine coaching ability of Mr. Marion. FRONT ROW: T. Way, D. Hokanson, R. Becker. SECOND ROW: B. Register, E. Brown, D. Stamen, M. Civitello, Mr. Ujobai. GOLF Mr. Ujobai with seniors T. Way, D. Stamen, and M. Civitello. Under the watchful eye of Joseph Ujobai, Conestoga's golfers rolled through an almost perfect season with only one loss to Coatesville's championship team. Those who made up the varsity team were seniors Don Mahoney, Mike Civitello, Townie Way, and Dave Staman, and junior Dean Hokanson. The varsity team was backed up by an equally strong J. V. team made up of Eric Brown, Bill Register and Ricky Becker. The linksmen won 80 per cent of all possible points which included one 15-0 shutout and two team scores of 14' 2-’ 2. All other matches, except for the one with Coatesville, were won by at least a 5-point margin. Two of the top five, Don Mahoney and Townie Way, qualified at the Districts with the other three just missing the cut. Townie later represented Conestoga in the state championships at Penn State. T.
