FOOTBALL Sweeping the Chest-AAont league, and enjoying their first undefeated season since 1934, Conestoga's 1960 Pioneers won 9 and tied one, to gain undisputed pos- session of the Ches-Mont trophy. Individually the Pioneers collected a lot of prizes. Dan Cogan, all-around halfback, was named to a first string all-Ches-Mont position, along with his running mate at halfback, Dave Thornton, and linemen Pete Meoli and Bob Menapace. Dan was also named most valuable player in the league, while Pete gained a first- string position on the all-Philadelphia area team. However, all this would have been impossible without the fine blocking of Bob Stover, Bob Menapace, Pete AAeoli, Frank Kegel, Bruce Buckley, Don Schubert, and John Beatty, who made up the Pioneers' front wall. Two seniors, Bob Estill and Doug White, were defensive standouts, as the Pioneers led the circuit in defense as well as offense. Two other seniors, Lloyd ' Smckey Stover and Bob Rubbo rounded out the stellar backfield combination. Jointly responsible for this fine record were the three coaches, Bill Paolantonio, Joe Ujobai, and Joe Kane, who built the team into a winner. Sportswriters and coaches in the Ches-Mont league agreed that the 1960 Pioneer eleven was the finest offensive team in league history. Jubilantly hoisting head coach Bill Paolan- tonio to their shoulders (below) Conestoga's champion Pioneers celebrate the end of their undefeated season. The 40-7 win over arch-rival West Chester climaxed the most successful football season at Berwyn since 1934. FIRST ROW: P. Osborne, A. Allman, S. Lugar, K. Kropp, N. Woolford, D. Scott, L. Jackmon. Miss Virginia Dulin, with the help of co-captains Arlene Allman and Dale Sibley, did a wonderful job of coaching the varsity team of thirteen seniors and three juniors. The team started by losing their first game to West Chester, contrary to earlier expectations, but they showed their fight and determination by tieing Owen J. Roberts 1-1 in the exciting second game of the season. Finally the Dulinites won their first game by defeating their pet rival Phoenixville 2-1. The girls were congratulated by Miss Dulin for their fine playing in the last game of the season against Lower Merion despite the 1-3 loss. Lynn Rohde was high scorer of the season with 5 points. The junior varsity, coached by Miss Elizabeth Mason, compiled a 6-1-3 record and showed fine prospects for next year's varsity. FIRST ROW: W. Monahan, coach; J. Luciano; K. Overton; J. McMenamin; J. Although over-shadowed by the success of our football team, the cross country squad lacked none of the spirit and determination common to Conestoga teams. Starting with an entirely new team except for returning lettermen, Ken Overton and John Luciano, Coach Bill Monahan did a fine job in developing many fine runners. Although this season was not Coach Monahan's finest, he was, nevertheless, pleased with the spirit and performance of the team. The lack of ex- perience and the fact that sickness forced the Harrier's captain, Overton, out of several meets kept the team from having a winning season. The squad won against Norristown, Boyertown, and Springford during their nine-meet schedule. In the season's final, the squad finished sixth at the Ches- Mont Championships and sixteenth in the District 1 run- offs. Mr. Monahan, never one to make excuses, says that he will be back with a bigger, more experienced squad, led by Peter MacKinnon and Spenser Rice, next year. He, the team, and the school feel that the Har- riers of 1961 will be the leaders of the Ches-Mont League. Below are the seniors on the squad: T. Malick, J.' McMenamin, J. Luciano, S. Mills, J. Cook, B. Merriam, K. Overton, E. Worth, D. Abell. FIRST ROW: J. Brown, W. Garrett, M. Brudek, W. Moore, J. Wertz, C. Williams. SbCOND ROW: R. Morrison, D. Hull, P. Murphy, G. Bigelow, J. McTaggert, J. Christie, K. Stewart. THIRD ROW: A. Mc- Quiston (Mgr.), J. Morhouse, R. Fish, M. Knipe, J. Rubbo, J. Kennedy, M. Grass, J. Reoch, R. Warden, J. Cook, C. Legge (coach), G. Christan. SOCCER When Conestoga first organized a soccer team a year ago, few people had any hopes of success within five years. The lack of a playing field, the lack of experienced players, and a very short time for training before the season started, made prospects dismal. In the second year, the pros- pect was not much brighter, but the boys had two things in their favor, Conestoga spirit and a talented, new coach. Playing their first four games before becoming effectively organized, the hoot- ers lost to such established powers as Lower Mer- ion and Westtown by close scores. In the fourth game, the team lost the services of its best player, co-captain, Jack Rubbo, who suffered a broken leg. The teatm rebounded, however, spurred by Rubbo from the sidelines and co-captain, Jeff Brown, on the field by winning its next two games and dropping the final one in the last sec- ond 1-0. Not enough can be said about the fine leader- ship and coaching of Mr. Legge. His enthusiasn in the team and the sport, encouraged the team to overcome heavy disadvantages during the sea- son. Coach Legge was well pleased by the desire and teamwork shown by the boys. With such standouts as goalie, Bob Warden, and defense- men, Pete Yocum and John Good, returning next year, he expects to have one of the finest teams in the area. Forty-five children from the Northern Home and the Northern Boys' Club of Wissahick- on spent the afternoon with us and helped us catch the real spirit of Christmas as we sat in the auditorium and watched them reg- ister obvious joy over some of the gifts we gave them. The big things like ping-pong tables and televi- sion sets were taken direct to the Homes. CHRISTMAS FOR Santa Claus, who sounded sus- piciously like Mr. Shepherd, enter- tained unexpectedly by means of an unscheduled contretemps in- volving a mantel, and one senior girl narrowly missed wearing a shiner for the holidays when one of our guests missed his intended target, an oversized punching bag. It's a good thing they presented the bicycles at a different time and place. A good time was had by all. THE PIONEERS FIRST ROW: J. Kennedy, D. Moore, D. Ammerman, I. Sentz, R. Scullin, A. Coach Doug Sheppard's 1961 basketballers fetched up a fairly even season, winning eleven and losing twelve. Captain John Kennedy was the work horse of the team, and spark plug, too, but the honors were carried off by newcomer Irv Sentz, a junior. Irv was tops on everybody's Ches-Mont All-Star team, probably be- cause he was high scorer in the league. Dave Pollock, another junior, was listed on the All-Suburban squad by the Main Line Times. Dan Cogan made his mark earlier in the year, but he also saw action with the varsity cagers throughout the season. Handsome Roger Scullin, the only other senior besides Kennedy and Cogan, con- tributed handsomely. Coach Sheppard expects great things of his team next year, provided nobody moves away. FIRST ROW: T. We 50 25 27 17 35 44 41 41 35 Coached by Misses Virginia Dulin and Elizabeth Mason, the varsity basketball team compiled a 6-3 record for the 1960-61 season. The team started practice early for a demonstration game with Upper Darby Girls' High. On their regular schedule, the Pioneers split their first four games including a 3 point loss to Phoenixville. The team then enjoyed a four-game win- ning streak. They suffered a loss in the season's last game to Owen J. Roberts by one point in the last six seconds. Co-captains were Marion Crosson and Sue Scott. High scorer for the season was Mary Lou Kerigan. She was also high scorer for one game with 25 points. Mrs. Ruth Aucott became the Junior Varsity coach midway in the season and helped the team to a 6-2-1 record. In contests with the toughest high school wrestling competition in the Delaware Valley, the Pioneers carded a 4-win, 8-loss record. One of the most satisfying wins for the team was over Haverford High, which has long been among the leaders in high school wrestling. The services of four of our classmates will be sorely missed next year, Pete Meoli, last year's Suburban Champ, who posted a 6-3 season this year, will be gone, along with Don Kopp, the other co-captain of the team, Morgan Smith, who lost in this year's Suburban finals in the 133-pound class carded 1 loss and 9 victories. The third member of the team departing this year is Bob Estill. Bob, who is this year's Suburban 180-pound champ claims 4 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie as his record. With the experience and confidence gained in this year's wrestling season, and with the formidable potential that remains, Mr. Baker and Mr. Legge should have a banner year in 1962. FIRST ROW: W. BASEBALL 1961 The Pioneers of 1961, under coach Ralph Heister, finished the season in third place in The Southern Division of the Ches-Mont League with a record of 6-6-1. Conestoga started very slowly losing all three pre-season con- tests. Then after a 5-3 loss to Coatesville, Conestoga began climb- ing with a 2-2 tie with Phoenixville. The first of three big wins came when Smokey Stover scored a run in the bottom of the 12th inning to top Spring-Ford 1-0. Coatesville's Mendenhall lost his first game in five outings to the Pioneers as Steve Welpott went the distance with a beautiful 3-1 victory. Leonard DiMidio drove in one run and Dan Cogan, the other two. Downingtown felt the full power of Conestoga's might as the Pioneers blasted out a 15-1 victory, Steve Welpott again winning. Top batters for the Pioneers were L. DiMidio, .380; Ron Holliday, .362; Dan Cogan and Tony Aquilante, .308; and Smokey Stover, .304. The pitching records show Paul Dodson at 2-0, Bruce Buckley at 1-0, Tom DuFrene at 0-1, Ron Holliday at 1-3, and Steve Welpott at 2-2 record, with an earned-run average of 1.50. FIRST ROW: B. Haney, J. Martinsen, Mr. Baker. The two new coaches, George Ulrich and Paul Baker, have given themselves plenty to do in the future. The team posted a 7-2 record in dual meets this year losing only to Lower Merion and to Coatesville which had the best team around these parts in years. Eleven school records were broken this year, and two new Ches-AAont records were posted by this 1961 track team. And a team is what it really is. Co-Captain Jim Kennedy, John Beatty, John Thomas, and Kent Overton set the new Ches-AAont 2-mile relay record of 8:27:6 at Downingtown this spring. And it was Kennedy, Jeff Brown, Jim Hodgson, and Spen Rice who set the new shuttle hurdle record. The other Co-Captain, Jack AAcTaggart, upped the school's javelin mark to 169, and Pete AAeoli set a mark of 45% for future shot-putters to aim at. Kennedy (119), Thomas (81) and Overton (59) were the season's high scorers. TRACK FIRST ROW: R. Abell, M. Knipe, J. McTaggart, J. Kennedy, P. Meoli, K. Overton. SECOND ROW: AAr. Baker, R. While most of us wrapped our coats tighter and hurried home, these amazons trooped forth daily in the most un-springlike weather with their leather baskets and their bare legs. Unfortunately, the season's results were rather disappointing, but the sport was new here. Another year or two should make quite a difference. It was Marion Crosson who distinguished herself on this team. She, and junior Judy Mearns, accounted for most of the goals made during the season. Sue Norton, who had the coldest job on the field, goaltender, was the other senior who made herself memorable. FIRST ROW: L. Romberger, S. Kelson, K. McCarthy, S. Baker, J. Smith, M. Taws. Herr, R. Scullin, G. Bigelow, F. Knier, Mr. Marion. Spacing their playing dates carefully, on clear days only, Coach Bill Marion's boys' tennis team became the only group to get through the entire spring season without playing in the rain or postponing the match altogether. They had a very successful season as well, particularly in that they licked West Chester twice, a- venging the pair of defeats the team had suffered the year before. Fred Knier and Glen Bigelow played singles regularly. The first doubles team of Roger Scullin and Stan Holloway proved to be a formi- dable pair. This year will be remembered as the one in which the matches should have been played on heated courts or in woolen underwear, but the team has a 9-4 record to keep them warm. KNEELING: T. Atkinson, M. Clarke, J. McGinnis, J. Pechin. STANDING: J. Hoxie, J. Blank, L. fcamsey, M. Kerrigan, Mrs. Aucott, C. Bauzenberger. TENNIS Mrs. Ruth Aucott, who supplied most of the information below, seems to re- member a very bleak kind of spring. Harriton—cold, windy, rainy—should have stayed home. Boyertown — only finished one set before the cold, cold rain called the match to a halt. The 3-6 record doesn't show that it took Radnor until 7:30 to beat us. And the Clark-Leighton match that went three hard sets the second time we met West Chester was a real thriller. Next year's team will sorely miss Marjorie Clarke, Jenny Rink, and Terry Atkinson who played 1-2-3 on this year's squad. However, it will have the J-V's who stuck it out bravely all season despite the fact that they played only two pick-up matches during the whole time. KNEELING: C. Barton, L. Lambert, J. Sellers, C. Conestoga's closest match came against Coatesville, 8V2-6V2; the Pioneers easily controlled all other matches. During the season the duffers scored two 15-0 shutouts. Conestoga had an extremely strong team with seven players who were capable of shooting in the low 80's. Charlie Schindler turned in the most pronounced victory when he topped one opponent on all 18 holes. 70 GOLF SWIMMING FIRST ROW: V. Thorkelson, K. Kropp, G. Oslin, K. McCarthy, K. Bolster, W. Clark.
