o THE CLASS OF 1959 PRESENTS THE PIONEER DEDICATION As advisor of our Student Council and School Store Alta Acheson plays a vital, but all too often unsung, role in the activities of Conestoga. She is the supervisor of the banquets given by the Student Council and is usually seen at most of the dances. She gives part of her time to collecting tickets at our football games, many times braving inclement weather. She takes on these extracurricular activities even though her schedule is well filled with classes of Algebra II, Plane and Solid Geometry and Trigonometry. It is with many thanks for the time and effort you have given to us that we dedicate this. The Pioneer of 1959, to you, Alta Acheson. Through the eyes of gaiety, Through the mask of blended colors, The individuality of the person seeks its place. Scorn it not. For this is the thread from which greatness is spun. With her passing came a deep sense of sorrow, but the memory of a courage- ous classmate will live with all of us who knew her. 68 ONCE NOTES FOR THE REUNION IN '69 Gadzooks! What a list! I never expected so many answers for the reunion. And all these people are do- ing such different jobs. Take for instance Dotty Motley. She's playing on the All-American Hockey team. Hmm. That reminds me of a news clipping I saw about a year ago. Now, what was it? Oh, yes, I remember. Colin Mackinnon ran the 3-minute mile. He always was a speedy boy. There were a couple of other kids from the class in sports. Steppie Alston's playing in major league baseball, for the Yankees, the traitor. Jim Mitchell made the Olympics a couple of years ago. He even beat the contestants from the Soviet Union. This reunion is going to be like a flock of little conventions. The nurses' convention, for instance, in- cludes Connie Ashbaugh, Dotty Carr, Patti Cunning- ham, Judy Dale, Carol D'Ascanio, Doris DeBoard, Brenda Farrington, Robyn Hargreaves, Pat Heller, Beth Ann McFarland, Jean Mellin, Martha Perry, Barbara Quann, Dale Rimel, Rosalie Roberts, Mary Rossi, Peggy Schnei- der, Nancy Swope, Gayle Taylor, Sandy Worden, and Vicki Weigand. And I didn't know there could be so many secretaries from one class until I consulted the guest list at the Amanuensis' Conclave. There are Brenda Brassington, Milly Capetola, Fay Jefferis, Sandy Kilpatrick, Ethel Richards, Judy Sabbi, Dolores Seber, June Stauffer, Betty Lou Stufft, Carol Vanderbeck, and Linda Gotwals. The doctors are plagued by the mis- spellings of their secretaries: Brenda Baylis, Jan Forcine, Joan McKeown, Ginger Snowden, and Barbara Voigt. Sitting on executives' knees are Barbara Beck, Bonnie Kellum, Dottie Leary, and Janet Matthews. Although the distinction between executive and private secre- tary is rather vague to me, the private secretaries are Pat Bielecki, Phyllis Lewis, Judy Rigg, and Ann Rosato. Marine records are kept by Barbara Gatlos. Here's another convention. This time it's for teachers. The first name I see is Anne Pinkerton's. She's a Latin teacher, giving the kind of homework she used to complain about. Among the ranks are Ken Evans, Eva May Hoskins, John Malpeli, Linda Meyers, Ed Penning- ton, and Gerry Reed. Battling with the students in the gym are Ginny Gowdy, Sue Stewart, Pete Thorell and Joe Pizzi. Beth Rhode is taking care of the nursery school children. After leaving Beth, the children might encounter Liz Gross, Mary Jane Meyer, or Sandy Pick- wick in elementary school, and Linda Moore might be teaching them art. As the children grow up they might have Sally Kerigan for biology or Scott Slobodian for physics. Danny Mauger takes care of the math depart- ment while the languages are taught by Lynn Rice and history by the professor himself, Paul Sharpless. Many of my erstwhile classmates have achieved their greatest aim in life by graduating from college. This list includes Bruce Schutte, Kristin Senff, Fran Spence, Eddie Tedeschi, Ardie Cleaves, Lynne Hague, Charlotte Howard, Patti McCarthy, Jane Moberg, Robyn New- kumet, Bill Nutter, Kevin O'Connor, Bob Phillips, John Schoeninger, Lynn Busey, and Nancy Devaney. Dick Davison graduated from Duke and Walt Pierce made it through Annapolis with not too hard a struggle. The armed forces absorbed several of our people. Lenny Brown, Tom Jarrett, and Danny Roberts are in the Navy and Joyce Lindewall is in the Women's Navy, the Waves. Walter Weadley is flying around in the Air Force, with Carolyn Cain doing the ground work in the WAFs. The Army has latched on to Bill Staats, Richard Rice and Howard Schurter. Geraldine Newton Schurter. Geraldine Newton volunteered for the WACs. Onward to the business world! Dottie Blitz, Bonnie Rice, and Louise Clark are working in one of our largest department stores as merchandisers. Mike Honeywell and Dave Stokes are fairly well-known business ad- ministrators. In the managing field are Eugene Nugent, who has the title of Public Relations Manager, Don Welde, who manages a business, and Pete Consalvi, who manages his own restaurant. One of the larger Chicago firms employs several of the old grads. Jenness Talbott works in the outer office where Jean Chadwick is receptionist. Kathy Griffin is one of many typists. Sam DeRemigio and Myrtle Burgess keep the books straight. Here's an interesting note. Don Welde writes that the top Studebaker salesman in the country is Bob Lacy. I seem to remember that Margie Jenkins and Marty Sarmento ventured into the business world, but no one has heard any news of them. I guess they sank into oblivion. I am told we have several successes in the class. Successes at what, I don't know, but nevertheless they are successes. They are Jim Grimm, Arthur Irons, Kay King, and Penny Mays. Flying high are Doug Fairchild and Bob Fisher. Bob happens to be flying faster in his jet than Doug is in his conventional model. Accompanying these fellows are those lovely airline hostesses, Judy Behrndt, Sue Dougherty, Mary Lou Garland, and Ann Watmough. Also traveling, although not always by air, are Maureen Ann McBride, Suzette Warner and Tom Hick- man. Gabriel Pilotti and George Griffin have already been around the world several times. Chuck Craig is wending his way about the earth as a soldier of for- tune. Unfortunately he has not yet found that fortune, but he's good at soldiering. Of course we have some engineers. Ronnie Brown, Jack Geehr, Bill Johnson, Fred Sternberg and Richard Walter have braved the flood. Chris Brown, Steve Hendrix and Carol Davis are still playing with electricity. Mark Nardone is mixing new chemicals. Bob Goebert as a mining engineer is digging around in the cliffs. Rich McKee has become a mechanical engineer and Chick McDonnell is a civil engineer. Housewives Libby Edwards, Helen Melchiorre and Jan Perry are reading stories in their favorite magazines 70 (continued on page 72) SENIOR PLAY TIME OUT FOR GINGER by Ronald Alexander ______Janice Perry _____Carol Holmes Kevin O'Connor ___Anne Pinkerton ___Isabelle Phillips Betty Kay Hanley ______Jack Geehr ___ Ted TenBroeck ____Tom Gregory ______Bob Turner 71 REUNION NOTES-continued that are written by Sidney Kelly and Judy Reichner. These stories are often edited by Nancy Hill. Some of the ads in these magazines have been drawn by Ted Schmitt and Barry Connor. Others are photographed by Tony Pizzi. These same housewives are wearing fashions designed by Judy Jones and Barbara Barger. Donna Hendrix is the interior decorator for Libby's new house. Dave Lemons has designed the car that Helen is driving, and Carole Hendrickson painted the portrait above Jan's fireplace. The local beauticians, Joan Mower, Lupe Navarro and Margie Wasson, went to school with us, too. Mechanics Ray Springer, John Kirk, Dorn Aquilante and Phil James service the cars of the Main Line. Kathy Biever wrote a note telling me of the entertain- ing members of the class. She and Claudia Fondots are now star ballerinas. Denny Alieva and Joe Moore are playing in a dance band. Jack Jobst is one of the few good radio announcers left, Lori Larson is working in television and Linda Lewis is becoming a famous actress. Chip Stewart writes that he, Harry Benner, and Ken Souser are working in a Philadelphia law firm. He also says that Jackie Leary is now an outstanding doctor. Tom Gregory is a Baptist minister back home. Charles Morris has become rector of the Good Samaritan Church in Paoli. Sandy Maylen is working doggedly in the field of Christian education and Lynn Roberts is paddling from atoll to atoll in the South Seas as a missionary. So far, this job has been easy, but now the names don't fit into special categories. I guess I'll just have to go through them one by one. Jeff Davis is fighting fires with the Berwyn Company. Tom Kummer is fly- ing about in his own plane. Wendy Cusamano is ap- pearing on the covers of Glamour and Mademoiselle. She looks very chic in the latest fashions. Walt Weadley told me that James Hally is on relief again. That's really a shame because he did so want to be a mil- lionaire. Janice Heston is a home economist with the Betty Crocker Foundation. Bill McNaull is a lifeguard at Cape May during the summer. He didn't say what he does in the winter. Don Jeffris is supervising the ex- cavation for buildings being built by Joe Palmer and Joe Parelia. Barbara Rice is playing the chemist. She spends most of her time pouring solutions from test tube to test tube. Todd Stiffel works in the same lab as a biochemist. Nancy Scullin is a medical technologist at Johns Hopkins. Gail Ryan is head of physical therapy at Philadelphia General and Carol Terry is working in the physical rehabilitation section at Jefferson. Jerry Watson is in theoretical physics. If I remember correctly he was a member of the Saturday chemistry classes. Well, you never know what a person will be doing next. Gil Siddall is digging around the rocks of Egypt with a Columbia University geological expedition. Carl Force spends his time in a fire tower in the forests of Alaska. Cindy Cordero has her Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She's achieving her aim of getting a good education. Isabelle Johnson got through business school several years ago. Allen Valen- tine has graduated. I'm not sure from what, but he has. Martha Nugent is in the hospital suffering from a few broken bones. That indestructible car she built was not so indestructible as she thought. Alex Ogle, our great intellectual, became a Rhodes scholar. Cindy Patin works with the United Nations. She speaks five languages fluently and is one of those indispensable interpreters. Jim Drake is still struggling with physics. Carol Holmes is searching for the missing link between the ape and man. Kathy Foster is in Arizona keeping house for Bob and is now Mrs. Turner. Doug Sprenkle has an office on Wall Street, which he keeps well stocked with tranquilizers. Good old quiet Earl Hoffman is silently making millions. Unfortunately Uncle Sam takes a large part of it as income tax, leaving Earl with only fifty thousand a year. Judy Aller is married to a man from California, and she now has eight children. Bill Aitken is following in the footsteps of President Harding. He spends most of his time bloviating. Mary Knier is giving parties to rival those of Elsa Max- well. Her latest had eleven hundred people attending. Don Henry is coaching football at some hick school called Radnor. Lorna Hill is off on a night club tour again. She is entertaining high society with her delight- ful comedy routine. Steve McClure is traveling from newspaper to newspaper delivering his barbed com- ments on the situation of the world at present. James Jackson is lounging in a well-furnished executive's of- fice. He, too, has joined the ranks of the pill-taking businessmen. Ted TenBroeck is beating his way through symphonies with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Oh, by the way, he's beating the tympani, not his wife. Isabelle Phillips has had several piano concerts at Carnegie Hall. Lynn Hurst is modeling the latest styles at Saks Fifth Avenue. Deni Johnson now has the title of Shortest Housewife on the Main Line. That's quite a distinction. Bill Stevenson is teaching French in a Virginia high school. Judy Tarr sells ladies' hats in Macy's basement. Karl Ellis is personnel manager of Gimbel's Philadelphia store. Betsy O'Hara is married, lives in Ohio, and has three sets of twins. Dave Davison is a lineman for Philadelphia Electric. Dave Magee owns a gas station in Paoli. Mary Sharon and Vivian Rudick have joined the ranks of the housewives. Dick McCuen has be- come a history teacher. Vivian Frances is a saleslady in John Wanamaker's in Ardmore. Lucia Renzo teaches roller skating at the Berwyn rink. Our friend Joe Moran appears to be very successful as an international play- boy. Unfortunately the government doesn't know his source of income so that it can be taxed. Bill Russell is making the rounds of the stock car races. Frank Di Fabrizio is quietly tending cars in Devon. Last but not least. Revelle Deems has not been heard of since June, 1959. 72 For those with the proclivities For various activities That fall outside the classroom's clutch, Conestoga offers much. With the school's new motto, Sincerity, the coun- cil worked this year to improve school-community relationships, to co-ordinate student-teacher relations to a greater level of efficiency, and to promote better con- ditions between students. Pioneer work was done in improving contacts among suburban Philadelphia schools. The council was influential in starting a tutoring system which benefited many in the student body. Better school spirit was encouraged by (1) the foundation of the Pep Club, (2) more and better publicity of school events, (3) more pep rallies, dances, and canteens and (4) consideration of a Pledge of Sincerity. Working closely with the administration and faculty, with the students and the various organizations of the school, the Student Council has made many improve- ments which have made 1958-1959 a memorable and enjoyable year. 75 FIRST ROW: M. THE YEARBOOK STAFF Members of the Yearbook staff meet three times a week to put together a book that highlights the outstanding people and events of the year. We collect informa- tion and edit it. We design pages and rack our brains for new and different ideas. Our advisor, Mr. Hickman, sits calmly by with crossed fingers as we inch our way through the pages. Mrs. Starr and the business staff conduct the annual subscription campaign, solicit ads from local business establishments, and generally try to keep The Pioneer out of debt. Last but not least our hats are off to our typists. They spend the year struggling to decipher the scratchings we send to be typed. 76 MARILYN RICE Co-Editor LOUISE CLARK Co-Editor FIRST ROW: L. In Conestoga, nearly everybody reads the Spoke. The words may be old, but the idea is still the same. The Conestoga Spoke informs everybody of news, old and new, happening in or around the school. The snappy features and lively cartoons provide interest for those whose minds run in a lighter vein, and of course, there is a sports page. Editor-in-chief of this year's Spoke is Nancy Hill; feature editor is Anne Pinkerton, news editor is Holly Warner, while Dave Toensmeier writes the sports articles. 78 PRESS CLUB FIRST ROW: G. This cheer heard at every football game gives evidence of the enthusiasm created by the snappy Garnet and Grays —the Conestoga Marching Band. Sparked by the majorettes, colorguards, cheer- leaders and drum major, the band adds zest and excite- ment to every game by its intricate, colorful forma- tions carefully worked out each week. The 1958-1959 Marching Band is under the direction of Anton F. Kiehner, with Janice Forcine its competent and able drum major. THE CONCERT BAND MR. KIEHNER, Sponsor After the completion of the football season, the Marching Band is dissolved into a larger organization— the Concert Band. By its annual concerts, the Con- cert Band is an important vehicle to demonstrate the instrumental musicianship of its members and provides an excellent opportunity for the community to listen to and appreciate good music. DRAMATICS Students interested in any phase of the dramatic arts can develop and express this interest in the activities of the Drama Club. Discussions, films, individual projects and do-it-yourself sessions provide experience in the skills of make-up, costuming, lighting, stagecraft, and the problems of directing plays. Short plays presented in assemblies give the members an opportunity to develop their acting talents. A greater familiarity with plays comes from reading scripts in the club meetings. There are opportunities to watch other groups perform and to discuss television shows, thus fostering an awareness of the modern theater. Whether the yen is to shine on stage or to pull ropes behind the scenes, students find a world of enjoyment and understanding in the Drama Club. FIRST ROW: N. Buckley, L. Hill, J. Jones, B. The Hi-Y is open to any boy regardless of race, color, or economic status. 89 SERVICE CLUBS Service clubs can be considered a part of the backbone of Conestoga. All of the members of the various clubs work hard, with no compensation and often little, if any, recognition. There are five such groups. Monitors maintain order in the halls, and direct newcomers. The school store is a small department store at the rear of the cafeteria, open in the mornings before school, and at the end of each lunch period. The store sells everything needed for a normal school day. Helping Mr. O'Dea, library assistants learn how to sign out, card, and shelve books, and where basic information can be found. In rain or shine, the parking lot assist- ants are always on their job, keeping accurate records of all the cars and pre- serving order in the parking lot. The stage crew performs duties that most people take for granted, such as lighting for assemblies and other production stage settings and plans. They work diligently days before a performance, so that details, such as the adjustment of a microphone or the dimming of lights, will be certain before- hand. 90 STAGE CREW MR. HOBBY CLUBS The chance to meet once a week with kindred souls and to fare abroad occasion- ally in search of stimulating discussion, worthy opposition or just entertainment keeps these groups active and interesting. But their components don't mix. The Radio Club members talk of ohms and handle solder, while the picture-making people figure local length and splash developer. The Chess players are as quiet as their pieces, while the members of the Radio Forum are unquestionably vocal. Naturally, the Fine Arts adherents are mighty fine artists. RADIO CLUB FIRST ROW: P. BEYOND SCHOOL SERVICE CLUBS The clubs classified in this area are clubs that serve and do most of their work outside the school. The Future Nurse's Club has outside speakers, usually nurses, come and speak to them about what a career in nursing entails. The Future Teach- er's Club goes on campus tours and the seniors in the club do practice teaching at the various grade schools in the area. The Red Cross also does service work outside the school. The Student Affiliation Society is in charge of the exchange students and it also arranges for any student in the school to get a pen pal in a foreign country. Our affiliate schools are Ashmead School in Reading, England, and Sophie-Charlotte Schule in Berlin, Germany. The Future Homemaker's Club sponsors bake sales throughout the year and serves as an aid to girls who are planning to continue their career in homemaking. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA FIRST ROW: E. As an added educational boost, trips are taken to Philadelphia to see historical movies, such as The Brothers Karamazov. Le cercle francais, and El circulo espanol meet once a week for the purpose of enabling students taking the second year of study to become more familiar with the language and its background. Roberts, Pottstown, Spring- Ford, Phoenixville, and Ridley Park. The players were held to a tie by Coatesville and beaten by Downing- town, but finished the season by beating West Chester 28-26 in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. The League record of six wins, one loss, and one tie gave Conestoga a tie for the second straight year. It was a real team consisting not of one or two outstanding stars but of a contingent of sound and aggressive football players working together as a unit. The fine play of the team was due to the performances of many seniors. The team will lose Pete Thorell, quar- terback, backs Ed Byrd, Don Henry, Marty Sarmento, John Vause, Ron Brown and Sam DeRemigio, ends Matt Alston and Joe Parelia, tackles Bruce Schutte, Chick McDonnell, Guards Ronnie Welpott and Phil James, and center Walt Pierce, a tremendous defensive player. Matt Alston, end and safety man of the Pioneers, was placed on the All-Ches-Mont League team and was given honorable mention on the State All-Star Team. The team was strong and well-balanced with seniors, Colin Mackinnon, Jim Mitchell and Eliel Thornbury leading the way. Strong support came from seniors Doug Sprenkle, Scott Slobo- dian, Richie Walters, and Dave Toensmeier, juniors Art Toensmeier and Dave Roberts, and sophomore, Kent Overton. This team, which placed third in the tough District I competition, was one of the best Conestoga has ever had, and it will be difficult to improve on its record. Colin Mackinnon, one of the best runners ever to graduate from Conestoga, was the champion of the Ches-Mont League and went on to the state champion- ships, finishing tenth out of two hundred entries. It had fast backcourt men in Pete and Mike Thorell, and in Bobby Pasquarella; and the taller men on the team, Ted Byrd and Joe Parelia, did a good job but they were just not tall enough to cope with the big men of their op- ponents' teams. The team was well coached, but without the scoring and re- bounding punch that only a big man can provide, the team did not fare so well in Ches-Mont competition. Pete Thorell and Ted Byrd, two starters will be graduated along with Alex Ogle, Joe Parelia, Marty Sarmento, and Matt Alston; but with three starters and a good junior varsity team returning, Mr. Sheppard is looking forward to a good season next year. SUE STEWART UNDEFEATED DULINITES JACKIE LEARY M2 BRENDA BRASSINGTON LUCIA RENZO BASKETBALL Congratulations to the girls of the basketball team and Miss Dulin for an un- defeated season! The seniors on the victorious squad were Jackie Leary, Sue Stewart, forwards; and Kristen Senff, Judy Reichner, Brenda Brassington, and Lucia Renzo, guards. Miss Dulin has much praise for the skill of the girls and the way they worked together as a team. She says that their spirit and will to win was outstanding. The forwards were all good shotmakers, adept at everything from set to hook shots. The guards did an excellent job of getting rebounds, making interceptions, and blocking shots to keep the opponents' scores low. The junior varsity also had a fine season, with six victories and two losses. There are several players on the junior varsity who are gaining skill rapidly and will be influential on the varsity next year. The scores, all in favor of Conestoga, were Pottstown, 54-20; Coatesville, 53-33; Phoenixville, 59-35; Conshohocken, 54-29; Springfield, 51-27; Spring-Ford, 54-28; West Chester, 63-21; Downingtown, 49-27. JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM FIRST ROW: L. Rohde, C. Deems, S. Norton, J. Rink, M. Crosson. SECOND ROW: Mrs. Garinger, J. Wooden, S. Scott, L. Schaefer, D. Scott, B. Miller. WRESTLING Conestoga's wrestling team enjoyed the finest season in it's short career this winter. Led by the undefeated captain Dick Purnell, Ted Schmitt, who lost twice, and Joe Pizzi, loser of only one match, the team compiled a 7 and 6 record against the finest wrestling schools in the Philadelphia area. Very strong through the middle eight classes, only inexperience in the light weights held them back from a much more successful season. The team did well considering that this is only the third year of varsity competition but perhaps it is the individual achievements which are most impressive. Dick Purnell earned a 13-0 record in the 133 pound weight class during the regular season and in the Suburban Tournament went undefeated again. Ted Schmitt also went undefeated to join Dick in the District I finals. Ronnie Welpott, who lost only two matches at 165 pounds, and Frank Wildman, 6-4-2 at 145 pounds, were dependable performers for Coach Bob Fitzgerald's well conditioned matmen. The junior varsity wrestled the junior varsity of many of the teams that the varsity wrestled. They gain valuable experience toward the day they will wrestle for the varsity. Those who did well and are expected to wrestle for the varsity next year are Don Kopp, Jack Pyle, Rich Mannal, Jim Scancello, and Bucky Dempsey. Hanna, Manager; Head Coach Douglas Sheppard. c=o BASEBALL = We entered the season with no thought of an out- standing team. The team was young and inexperienced, being comprised mainly of juniors and sophomores. It showed its lack of experience and lost the first three games. Hard work and lots of practice paid off, however, and coupled with a change in the line-up, the team jelled into a unit that worked very well together. It picked up momentum throughout the season and compiled an 8-5 record. The team's greatest asset was its fine hitting. The first five men in the batting order, Alston, Burr, Parelia, Thorell, and Pierce, batted over .350. We entered the Coatesville game on the crest of a six-game winning streak and needed a victory to give us the division title. The game was a thriller that went 11 innings but we came out on the short end of a 1-0 score. The outfield consisted of returning seniors Pete Thorell and Walt Pierce. Chick McDonnell alternated with Jack Horner in right field. Returning seniors in the infield are Joe Parelia, Matt Alston, Dick Miller, and Jack Geehr. With these men and sophomores Walt Lewis and Al Larkin returning, it looks like a successful season ahead for Coach Sheppard's 1959 team. Everyone concerned worked hard but at best this season can be considered a large step toward better teams in the future. The girls worked hard under the constant interest, en- couragement and enthusiasm of Coach Martha Shalitta. They demonstrated keen competitive spirit and a will to win against opponents whose major interest was tennis. Miss Shalitta said that the team enjoyed playing against such good oppo- nents and that the closer scores were encouraging. Linda Laffey played first singles; Sue Mearns, second singles; and Betty Gordon, third singles. Jackie Diehl and Judy Woolford teamed up for doubles competition, as did Joanne Wolfe and Lynn Scheafer. Sue Stewart and Nancy Devaney are this year's seniors who will carry on the tennis tradition. Miss Shalitta hopes that the 1959 tennis team will get progres- sively better and go on to many victories. NANCY DEVANEY JUNIOR VARSITY TENNIS STANDING: D. Young, B. Moyer, M. Laffey, T. Santini, B. This year's team, with an undefeated season, is the pride of Conestoga. Hockey and tennis also had successful seasons. Special mention should go to Jackie Leary, Sue Stewart and Dottie Motley, who were awarded blazers for membership on at least three varsity teams. Under the experienced hand of Coach Monahan, the trackmen developed relay teams that were almost unbeatable from the 440-yard relay to the 2' 2-mile distance medley. In the Bethlehem Relays, we won and retired three trophies. At Boyer- town, our relay teams won three races and in the Penn Relays the mile relay team won two races in record Ronnie brown time. The individual performances were also quite impres- sive. We had two Ches-Mont champions: Colin Mac- kinnon won the mile and Al Valentine in the 440-yard run. There was a potent one-two punch in the half-mile, with Charlie Wilson and Doug Sprenkle placing second and third. The mainstays of the team were Warren Kaye, Jim Hanley, and Jackie Leary with strong support coming from Ben Burgess, Larry Watson, and Lou Evangelista. Warren Kaye placed well in the District I matches and was one of seventy golfers in the state to qualify for the P.I.A.A. championships at Penn State. Most of the team was graduated, leaving only Jackie Leary and Joe Moore to carry on next year. Jackie Leary is the best female golfer ever to play for Conestoga and one of the best junior players in the area. 124 JOE MOORE JACKIE LEARY Our advertisers spend.their dough For pages in our book, and so Our book is better 'cause they do.
