CONEMA UGH VALLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING HISTORY Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing was established in 1896. The Alumni Associa- tion was organized in 1903. The School of Nursing of the City Hospital of Johnstown consolidated with C onemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nurs- ing in 1920. The nurses residence was built in 1924, and the nursing education building was completed in 1969. The school participated in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps Program during World War II. A psy- chiatric nursing course at Torrance State Hospital, Torrance, Pennsylvania, was initiated in 1948. Since 1950 faculty members of the University of Pittsburgh at I ohnstown have participated in the teaching program of the School of Nursing. A course in tuberculosis nursing at Veterans Administration Hospital 45175, Butler, Pennsylvania, was included in the curriculum from 1950 until 1962. Throughout the years, the length of the program has ranged from two to three years. The present program is thirty-four months in duration. For more then seventy years, graduates of the school have contributed their knowledge and skills to meet nursing needs. More than 2,000 nurses have been graduated from the program. Graduates of the school have been eligible to write the licensing examination since the establishment of the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners in 1910. C onemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nurs- ing has appeared on the list of approved schools since the first list was compiled in 1918 by the State Board of Nurse Examiners. The school program has been accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Service since I une, 1955.
