HIST HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL OF NURSING Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing was established in 1896. The Alumnae Asso- ciation of the School was organized in 1903. In 1920 the School of Nursing ofthe City Hospital of Johnstown consolidated with Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. The Nurses Residence was built in 1924. An adioining residence was purchased by the Junior Auxil- iary in 1944 and was given to the hospital in 1954. During World War ll the School participated in United States Cadet Nurse Program. A course in psychiatric nursing at Torrance State Hospital, Torrance, Pennsylvania was begun in 1948. Since 1950, courses in physical, biological, and social sciences have been taught by faculty members of the Johnstown College of the University of Pittsburgh. From 1950 until September 1962, a course in tuberculosis nursing at Veterans Administration Hospital No. 5175, Butler, Pennsylvania was included in the curriculum. The class of 1962 was the last class enrolled in the three year program. A two and one-half year program was instituted in 1960 for the class of 1963. For over sixty years graduates of the school have contributed their knowledge and skills to meet nursing needs. More than 1,500 nurses have been graduated from the program. Graduates from the school have been eligible to take the examination for registration and licensure since the establishment of the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners in 1910. Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing has appeared on the list of approved schools since the first list was compiled in 1918 by the State Board of Nurse Examiners. The school program has been accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Service since June, 1955. The school program is approved for training by the Veterans Administration. Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital is a general hospital located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Johns- town, an industrial community of approximately 65,000, is located 70 miles east of Pittsburgh and 120 miles west of Harrisburg. HISTORY OF THE HOSPITAL Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital was established and incorporated December 2, 1889, with funds contributed by the peoples of the world. lt is a memorial to the victims of the flood and to the beneficence extended to the people of the Conemaugh Valley in time of disaster. On March 7, 1892, the name of the corporation was changed from Conemaugh Valley Hospital to Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital. The hospital has provided service since February 4, 1892. The capacity is 500 beds and 40 bassinets. Operating costs are met by patient 'Fees and state funds. Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital is approved by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hos- pitals and the Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure and is a member of the Amer- ican Hospital Association, Hospital Association of Pennsylvania, and Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania. 3
