The patient, the heart of Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital around whom all activities revolve, is the chief beneficiary of advances in all areas of hospital activity. Advances in care directly aid the patient, but advances in teaching and research inevitably help him, too, for the patient is the origin, purpose, and incentive of all services of the hospital. Patient care, teaching, and research cannot be separated because they overlap and intertwine in the complicated anatomy of the hospital. As in the past, we are acutely aware of our responsibility of providing the best in patient care. Much has been done in the last decade to provide the maximum in patient comfort and to improve the technical aspects of care. Large scale remodeling of patient areas, additions of new wings, continued improvements in techniques, installation of an inhalation therapy unit, planned expansion of the psychiatric department and the establishment of an intensive coronary care unit are indicative of the continuing concern for the welfare of the patient. We are proud of the heritage of warmth and friendliness associated with Memorial through the Years and we intend to do all within our means to maintain this tradition. Our Board of Managers, headed by Sidney D. Evans, president, is composed of wise and experienced men who have assumed the responsibility of providing safe and modern facilities to treat patients. The hospital personnel represent the many skills necessary to carry out the doctors' orders and to make the patients comfortable.
