JUNICR AU ILIARY ST IIENT HSE LUA FU ll The Junior Auxiliary of Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital administers a Memorial Fund, independent of its other proiects, for the purpose of giving financial assistance to needy students enrolled in the basic nursing program of Memorial Hospital. The only sources of income for the fund are gifts of interested persons who wish to honor the mem- ory of a deceased friend or loved one in a living and perpetual way. The fund originated with a gift of 525.00 in 1946 in memory of Dr. Robert C. Davis. As others added gifts, the idea of a Memorial Fund, to be used solely for interest free loans to student nurses, was born. The first loan was granted in 1950, aiding one student. The following year three students received financial assistance, and the number has steadily grown with the increased enrollment and expense of nursing education. At present, one hundred and thirty-five students have received loans. As individuals many have achieved outstanding records in their nursing programs, and many have pursued nursing specialties or earned advanced academic degrees. The terms of the loan require that the student repay the loan at the rate of 550.00 quarterly, begin- ning six months after graduation. lt may be paid more rapidly at the discretion of the borrower. All informations and transactions are confidential. All money repaid on loans goes back into the Student Nurse Loan Fund to further the education of other nurses who may seek financial assistance. The loans are made upon application, followed by a personal interview with the applicant and parent or guardian by a committee of auxiliary members, who are professional nurses but not actively asso- ciated with the school of nursing. To be eligible for a loan from the fund the applicant must have been accepted for admission by the school of nursing. Gifts to the fund are welcome in any amounts, large or small. The uses of this money constitutes a truly living and far-reaching tribute to those whom it is intended to memorialize. 58
