9 . ,Vg all ln November 1946, a gift of 525.00 was received by the Junior Auxiliary of Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in memory of Dr. Robert C. Davis. At that time it was suggested that this money become the nucleus of a Memorial Fund to which auxiliary members could contribute in memory of a loved person who had died, or as an annual tribute to a dear one's memory. Gradually, news of the fund spread and people outside the auxiliary began to contribute. ln November I949 there was 5862.77 in the Memorial Fund. The question arose as to what would be a fitting tribute to the collective memory of so many people. The suggestion was accepted that interest free loans to study nursing at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital be given to students who would otherwise be unable to finance their studies in the School of Nursing. Gifts to the funds have come in all sizes, the smallest has been 51.00, the largest, Sl,00O. The uses of this money constitutes a truly living and far reaching tribute to those whom it is intended to memorialize. The money of this fund is intended never to be used for any other purpose except theleducation of undergraduate nursing students at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital. The loan is to be repaid beginning six months after graduation, at the rate of 350.00 per quarter until paid in full. It may be, paid more quickly at the discretion of the borrower. All money repaid on loans goes back into the Student Nurse Loan Fund to further the education of other nurses who may seek financial assistance. All applicants for the loan must be unable to obtain money for this purpose from any other source. So far, 80 students have been assisted to study nursing. Several of these students have gone on to P0Sf-Qraduate professional study. The committee serving the Student Loan Fund is composed of members of the Junior Auxiliary of Mem0 l0lf all are graduate nurses. This committee handles all applicants on an individual and confidential basis. No reports are made of these transactions in order to protect the identity and feelings of the recipient.
