Owen, Clayton C. Dovey, Jr. The administrator's function in the hospital is to assure that the best possible care is rendered to the patients coming to the institution under his iurisdiction. Working toward the result of total patient.care he coordinates all the diverse factors that make up a modern hospital. This would include staff physicians, residents, interns, dentists, graduate nurses, practical nurses, student nurses, nurses aides, technicians in many different categories-including technical students, dietitians, dietary personnel, medical records, administrative personnel, office workers, engineering, main- tenance, housekeeping, laundry, and allied groups such as hospital auxiliaries and volunteers. He must Uflllle these groups of people whose goals, attitudes and motivations determine in a large part the contribu- tions they will make to the organization. The only reason for the existence of all these groups is the patient, whose needs are to be met. It is the role, then, of the administrator to see that this goal is accomplished. 63
