60.0 nf fnmoluzow Laci: To the day we took our pre-entrance examination. Hope and desire filled our hearts. On that day we met the girls who would be our classmates, co-workers and friends for the next three years. When we were notified of our acceptance, we knew we had taken the first step toward our goal of becoming professional nurses, To the classes our first six months of training. We took anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and chemistry at Iunior Pitt. Study hours, daily quizzes, microbiology slides, chemistry test tubes, and our pet cats from anatomy lab filled our dreams. At the hospital classroom we also studied nutrition, sociology, pharmacology, introduction to medical science, his- tory of nursing, professional adjustments and nursing arts. These sciences were basic to- ward a better understanding of ourselves, our patients, and our profession. In our jun- ior year, we took our specialty classes and advanced medical and surgical nursing: in our senior year, we took professional adjustments II and public health. To our first day on duty. We felt very conspicuousg no cap adorned our heads and our big black bows proclaimed to everyone that we were probies. That day We were busy arrang- ing flowers, giving ice Water and scrubbing. In the weeks and months following, we learned other procedures and treatments in our nursing arts -classes and labs. We car- ried them out under close supervision until we became more proficient and Valuable as nurses. To our capping ceremony. A cap was placed on each of our heads: we lit our candles, symbolic of the lamp we carry in nursing. Proudly, yet humbly, we pledged ourselves to our profession by repeating the Florence Nightingale Pledge. To our specialties-obstetrics, pediatrics, the diet kitchen and the operating room. In the operat- ing room, we learned surgical asepsis and the importance of teamwork during an opera- tion. In the diet kitchen, we planned menus for special salt-free or diabetic diets. ln pediatrics, we were taught the development and care of children in health and sickness, and in obstetrics, we learned the care of the mother and baby before, during and after delivery. To our affiliations. We affiliated at Torrance State Hospital for psychiatry, where we learned symp- toms of mental disorders and the importance of prevention. Ours was the first class to affiliate at Deshon Veteran's Hospital for tuberculosis nursing where we 'carried out principles of medical asepsis. To the dawn of the year 1951. That year seemed so distant three years ago-three years filled so full with learning and memories. The thrill and responsibility of being a senior student made us realize graduation was not far off. To our social events in off-duty hours. There were yearly picnics, swimming at the Y. W. C. A., and teas and parties on holidays. Our first social affair was a pajama party held by the upper classmen to get acquainted. As juniors, we were in charge of social activities which included a Square Dance at Westmont Grove, a Heart Hop at the Fort Stanwix. We also distributed gift Wrapped cigarettes and hand lotion to the patients at Christ- mas time. We held the Iunior-Senior Dance at the White Star Hotel for the seniors. Our senior dance will be held by the juniors at the V. F. W. The Alumni are having our graduation dance at the Sunnehanna Country Club. We elected class officers with Vivian Buchanan as president and Caryl Croft, Carol Mitchell, and Ieannette Cable as vice pres- ident, secretary and treasurer respectively. Miss Marjorie jones was elected unanimously as our class advisor. We have glanced back over our training period. Now we look forward-to gradu- ation, to state boards and to the beginning of our careers as professional nurses. Nurs- ing provides many fields and opportunities where each of us will seek her place. We look forward-to continue to give better nursing service in the future.
